LUNA

Dani's laughter remained cheerful even as the car pulled up in front of my building.

Josh turned off the engine and looked back to where I was sitting with Priscila, sharing the bottle of rosé wine we’d hidden from his view.

“It was good to see you again, Luna,” he said, sincerely.

“It was good to see you too,” I replied, already opening the door.

Dani leaned out the passenger window and yelled as if she couldn’t wake up my neighbors.

“Call me if anything happens! If that son of a bitch shows up and tries to mess with you, let me know, and I’ll come after him with a baseball bat!”

“And I’ll bring the gasoline!” Priscila added.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” I replied, laughing, but my stomach twisted for no reason. Or maybe for too much reason.

They waved, and the car drove off, vanishing around the corner. I sighed and entered the building. I felt nauseous, and cold sweat was beading on my skin; I figured I’d be even worse tomorrow.

I walked towards the elevator, pressing the button

  • Divorce didn't make me your ex   31 - I came to pick you up, honey

LUNAThe doorbell rang and yanked me out of sleep like an unexpected slap. I mumbled something incomprehensible and sat up in bed, blinking against the light in the room.I fumbled on the nightstand until I found my cell phone and checked the time on the screen: 6:23. I frowned, confused. What tormented soul wakes up this early on a Monday and then comes to wake up normal souls?I stumbled to my feet, still rubbing my sleepy eyes, my pajamas rumpled and my curls spilling everywhere. The doorbell rang again. This impatient person is not willing to wait for my soul to return to my body.— Coming… — I muttered, dragging my feet to the door.I unlocked it and turned the doorknob, still half on autopilot, and came face to face with a blue suit, dark eyes smiling, and a scent too good for this early.— Good morning, neighbor — Ace said, with that wide smile. — I just came to get my good morning kiss for good luck today. My eyes widened.— What?He leaned in a little, as if it were perfectly

  • Divorce didn't make me your ex   30 - FUCKKKKKKKKK!!!

ACEI held both of Luna’s hands in mine. As if they were the most precious things I’d ever owned. Perhaps they were.I tilted my head and kissed the back of one hand, then the other.“I’m going to take a quick shower,” I murmured, without taking my eyes off hers. Luna still seemed too lost in thought to speak. “And then... we can have dinner together. Does that work?”She nodded, and that timid agreement was worth more than any spoken "yes."I slowly got up and walked to the door. Before leaving, I glanced over my shoulder. She was still sitting there, eyes downcast and shoulders tense.I entered my apartment and closed the door behind me carefully. And then...“FUCKKKKKKKKK!!!” I roared, inside my apartment, punching the air so hard I nearly knocked over the lamp near the entrance.I started pacing, laughing to myself, laughing like a complete infatuated idiot.“She said yes! She said yes!” I yelled, throwing my arms open as if to embrace the universe. “I’m having dinner with Luna. I

  • Divorce didn't make me your ex   29 - Make you happy every day

LUNAThe farewell was brief, and awkward as only it could be after the scene on the balcony. My father pretended nothing had happened, a talent he had clearly perfected over the years, and I mentally thanked him for that. My mother handed us a bag with containers of food and one with pavé that she said was "to eat when your heart aches." I didn't have the courage to open it.Driving was the only thing I could do without thinking. My hands on the wheel, the music low, the city passing by the window. I tried to pretend nothing had happened until I got home to freak out in private. The sensation of the kiss was still on my lips, the heat was still on my neck. The memory of his fingers still lingered on my hip.Stopping at the corner light before turning onto my street, I saw him in the rearview mirror. There he was. Just a few feet behind me. And no, it wasn’t a coincidence.“Are you stalking me now?” I muttered to the steering wheel, rolling my eyes.I turned into my usual spot in front

  • Divorce didn't make me your ex   28 - First real kiss

ACEI mentally prepared myself for the moment she would pull away and slap me.It was the least I expected. A slap, a shove, one of those unusual insults she delivered when she felt threatened by me. But... none of that happened. Her hands, which had been hanging at her sides, moved up timidly. As if hesitating between pride and desire. They crept along my arms, her fingertips scratching the sleeve of my shirt, until they laced together at the back of my neck, as if seeking something to hold onto. That gesture shot through me like lightning. I took it as approval and pulled her to me with hunger.I slid one of my hands to the base of her head, weaving it through her curls, gathering a handful of her hair in my palm. I felt the heat coming from the skin of her neck, the accelerated pulse just below her ear. My thumb gently brushed her nape while my lips molded to hers with an almost painful calm. Her perfume immediately enveloped me, so familiar that my entire body reacted as if it had

  • Divorce didn't make me your ex   27 - Do you love me?

LUNAMy throat burned as if I had swallowed a live ember. I coughed uncontrollably while feeling my father's haunted gaze on us, a mirror of my own. He was coughing, too. In another situation, perhaps we would have laughed at the synchronicity. But not now.Not when Ace had just announced, with the most brazen face in the universe, that we... we... were planning to have a child. My eyes darted to him like a poisoned arrow. He rubbed my back as if he were being considerate, but it was impossible to ignore the hidden provocation in his smile. The jerk was having fun. My disgust for him at that moment was almost as intense as the urge to stick my fork in his jugular.“Daughter...” my mother said, her voice choked with emotion, clutching her hand to her chest. “Is this really true? You're going to try?”Ace smiled like an Oscar-nominated actor, all emotion and charisma.“Of course, mother-in-law. It’s something we’ve talked about a lot. Luna and I are closer than ever, so it feels like th

  • Divorce didn't make me your ex   26 - Something important to tell

ACEI tossed my jacket onto the back of the sofa and collapsed as if I'd run a marathon. The broom marks from my wife were still stinging on my arms. Literally assaulted with household items. And for no reason. Okay... for some reason. But would it have killed her to listen to me before throwing objects?I sighed deeply, staring at the ceiling of my empty house.“Nice work, Montesino...” I muttered, with a crooked smile. “This time it was almost a success, if we disregard the part where you were chased out like a basement rat.”I closed my eyes and rested my arm over my face, trying to ignore the loneliness that now seemed much louder. I was exhausted. More mentally than physically. I tried not to think about Luna’s expression when she called me an obsessive spirit and an emotional burden; I’d been laughing at her creative insults the entire way home. What will she call me next? The living room phone rang.“Lita, I’ve got it!” I yelled, already getting up from the sofa.“Hello?”“Ace,
