Chapter 4

Author: Tcee Eke
Elara’s POV

An hour later, the taxi stopped outside the Varek mansion. I paid the driver and stepped out.

The massive estate stood before me, illuminated by golden lights. Apparently, I had lived here for three years. Yet standing in front of it now felt no different from standing in front of a stranger’s house.

I pushed open the front door and stepped inside. The sound of laughter immediately reached my ears.

A woman’s laughter.

I followed the sound toward the living room then stopped.

A beautiful woman sat curled up comfortably on one of the couches. A wine glass rested in her hand while an expensive suit jacket hung loosely around her shoulders.

A man sat across from her, a laptop open on his lap.

The woman noticed me first. A smile spread across her face.

“You’re finally back.”

Lilith Laurent, Karl’s ex-girlfriend and she was with Karl, my supposed husband.

The woman Mira spent half the day talking about.

Karl looked up from his laptop. His gaze swept over me briefly then he looked back down at the screen.

“You’re late.”

I blinked. “I was in the hospital.”

“And yet here you are.”

I stared at him. For a second, I genuinely wondered how I had managed not to strangle him during our marriage.

Lilith laughed softly. “You really worried everyone.”

She sipped her wine elegantly. “Karl even left an important meeting because of your little stunt.”

Karl finally closed his laptop. “You seem determined to argue today.”

I looked at him. “You seem determined to be unpleasant.”

Lilith’s eyes widened while Karl stared at me like I was a stranger.

“What’s your problem?”

I almost laughed. “My problem?”

“Yes.”

I looked around the room. “Honestly? I’m still trying to narrow the list down.”

Lilith nearly choked on her drink.

Karl’s jaw tightened. “Enough.”

“Fine,” I shrugged, “Let’s start with something simple.”

My gaze shifted toward Lilith.

“Who are you?”

She blinked. “What?”

“I know your name but who exactly are you in this house?”

The smile disappeared from her face. Karl’s expression darkened immediately.

“Lilith is my guest,” Karl said coldly. “And you will treat her as such.”

I stared at him. “And I’m your wife.”

His expression didn’t change. “Then stop embarrassing yourself in front of her.”

I nodded slowly, “A very permanent guest.”

Lilith sat up straighter, “I don’t understand what you’re implying.”

“Really?” I gestured toward the jacket draped over her shoulders. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks like everyone in this house forgot who Karl’s wife is.”

The room went completely silent. For the first time, neither of them had an answer.

Lilith recovered first. “You shouldn’t be insecure.”

I laughed. “Insecure?”

Lilith’s smile became strained. “Yes.”

I shook my head. “You’re mistaken. You’d have to matter for me to be insecure.”

Her face froze.

Karl immediately stood. “That’s enough.”

I turned toward him. “Why?”

“Because you’re being ridiculous.”

My eyebrows rose. “Your ex-girlfriend lives in your house.”

“She doesn’t live here. We have investors coming tomorrow. You’ll be attending dinner.”

I folded my arms. “And if I don’t want to?”

“You don’t have a choice.”

“Why?”

Karl’s eyes hardened.

“Because the only reason you’re standing in this house is because my grandfather wanted it.”

The room fell silent.

Lilith’s lips curved upward slightly.

“Karl—”

“No.” His gaze remained fixed on me. “If she’s going to stay here, then she has to act accordingly.”

I smiled sweetly. “That’s unfortunate. It appears I lost the part of my brain that tolerated you.”

Lilith’s mouth fell open. Karl looked stunned.

Satisfied, I turned around and walked away.

I had barely reached the bedroom when my phone rang.

I frowned slightly before answering the unknown number.

“Hello?”

“Miss Elara?” a woman’s voice asked politely. “This is St. Mary’s Hospital.”

My brows pulled together slightly.

“Yes?”

“We’re calling regarding the emergency blood transfusion performed during your surgery.”

Confusion settled inside me immediately.

“What about it?”

“The donor who saved your life shares an extremely rare blood type with you.”

I frowned slightly.

“And?”

“The individual has requested to meet you. They believe you may be connected to their family.”

Elara’s POVThree Months LaterThe morning sun spilled across the Frost Empire construction site as reporters, investors, and city officials gathered beneath the massive white tent erected near the waterfront.I stood beside my father and brother, staring at the building behind us.The project was finally complete. It was a children's recovery center. A place for abused, abandoned, and missing children. A place where children like the girl I used to be could find safety again. My fingers tightened around the ceremonial ribbon scissors."You look nervous," my brother said.I glanced at him. "I'm about to speak in front of hundreds of people.""You survived being married to Karl Varek," he replied. "You'll survive this."I burst out laughing. My father shook his head. "You two are impossible."The laughter eased my nerves immediately. Three months ago, I couldn't have imagined this version of my life. The city now wanted interviews, photographs, business appearances, and endless public events.I was beginning to understand why my brother complained so much."I still think I should be allowed to fake a fever."My father looked unimpressed. "You are twenty-five years old.""Exactly. That's old enough to decide I don't want to attend."My brother laughed from across the room. "You say that now, but wait until everyone starts praising you."I narrowed my eyes. "Traitor."He grinned. "I learned from the best."My father looked pleased with himself.—An hour later, I found myself standing inside one of the largest hotels in the city.Crystal chandeliers hung overhead while guests filled the ballroom. Cameras flashed constantly as reporters documented every moment of the event. The moment I en

The lawyer had verified that the divorce documents were legal and recognized so I wasn't married to Elara again and I had no proof of signing the document under duress.A knock interrupted my thoughts."Come in."The door opened and my grandfather entered. The moment I saw his expression, I knew something was wrong. He looked furious again. I was getting tired of that look."Grandfather—""Sit down."I frowned. "I'm already sitting.""Good." He tossed a thick file onto my desk. The folder landed heavily

Every single one came from Karl.I stared at the screen for several seconds before handing the phone to my brother."Make him disappear."My brother looked delighted. "With pleasure."I watched as he blocked Karl's number then his email. Then apparently several other numbers Karl had already started using."How many phones does this man have?" I asked. My brother snorted. "How many times did he call?""Twenty-three."His expression darkened immediately. "Pathetic."I couldn't argue with that. For some reason, Karl suddenly wanted answers.Three years of marriage and he wanted answers now. Too late. I had spent enough time chasing him. Now it was his turn to be ignored. My brother stood up. "Dad wants to see you."That immediately made me suspicious. "Why?""He said it's important.""Those are dangerous words."My brother laughed. "Come downstairs."—An hour later, I found myself sitting inside my fat

Karl’s POV“Where could she have gone?!”I've lost count of how many times I snapped and yelled this question to each empty room I entered.Lilith stood beside me, a bored look on her face as she tried to get any update on who the Frost family missing heiress could be.“I can't find any post on the missing heiress. How can she not have a public presence?” Lilith queried.“Can you focus on helping me find Elara!” I snapped at her.Lilith frowned, setting her phone aside, “Why are you yelling at me? She's just doing this to get your attention.”I ran a hand through my hair, heaving a sigh, “It’s just my grandfather has refused to tell me where she is.”“I bet he's hiding her. Let's go get this contract and then you'll make it up to your grandpa and Elara will stop her games,” Lilith said.I nodded. Lilith was right, it's not like Elara has anywhere to go and she'd never leave me.“Let’s go dress up then,” I agreed.—The banquet was being held at Frost Manor. Even before arriving, I coul
