•Juliet POV•

I felt a sudden rush of anger in me and was about to say something to her, tears threatening to spill down my cheeks as the thought of my dad came to my mind, but Vera placed her hand on my shoulder, and that was like ice to my fire.

I sniffled, looking away from my mother who was still on the floor, her words blending into a blur I didn’t even want to hear. How could she say that? I had heard my mother talk about my dad in a way that wasn’t good countless times, but hearing her say it at that moment cut deeper than before.

“Mrs. Ryder, I think you should leave,” Vera said sharply, her tone laced with irritation. “Isn’t it obvious that whatever you’re doing is only making things worse?”

My mother looked up, shooting Vera a deadly stare before shifting her gaze back to me. “Juliet, I know you can create a space in your heart to forgive me for all I’ve done in the past.”

“Seems more like the past, present, and future to me,” Vera huffed, rolling her eyes dramatically.
