DARIEN

I sat on the cold floor of the empty nursery with my back against the crib. I held a half-empty bottle of dark whiskey in my hands. The room smelled like old alcohol, stale sweat, and cold rain.

I had not showered in three days. I had not shaved. My shirt was torn, stained with my own dried blood, and my left shoulder beat with a hot, sharp pain every time I moved.

I didn't care. I just took another long drink from the bottle, letting the amber liquid burn my raw throat.

DARIENI sat on the cold floor of the empty nursery with my back against the crib. I held a half-empty bottle of dark whiskey in my hands. The room smelled like old alcohol, stale sweat, and cold rain.I had not showered in three days. I had not shaved. My shirt was torn, stained with my own dried blood, and my left shoulder beat with a hot, sharp pain every time I moved.I didn't care. I just took another long drink from the bottle, letting the amber liquid burn my raw throat. The front door of the penthouse opened down the hall.Heavy footsteps walked into the apartment. Loud voices echoed off the high ceilings. It was Leo and Julian—two men I had known since we were boys in the street. They walked into the nursery and stopped, looking down at me in the dark."Jesus, Darien," Leo said, shaking his head. "Look at you, man. You look like a ghost.""Get out," I rasped. My voice sounded ruined, low and scratchy."We came to say we are sorry for your loss, bro," Julian said, stepping clo

  • Divorced, Desired, Dangerous    Chapter 96: MOVING AWAY

NILAHThe penthouse was completely quiet when I walked through the heavy front door. All the lights were turned off. The big living room was dark, lit only by the gray rain hitting the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. I stepped over the soft carpet with slow, heavy steps. My black wool coat was wet and heavy on my shoulders. Water dripped off the bottom hem, making small dark circles on the floorboards. I did not take off the coat. I did not take off my wet shoes. My body felt frozen, like ice was running through my veins instead of blood.Marko stood by the front door behind me. He held his big black umbrella in his hand, his head bowed down low toward his chest. Tears were still wet on his rough face."Nilah," Marko said in a very quiet, shaky voice. "Do you want me to carry your bag to the car?""No, Marko," I whispered. My voice was soft and thin, like paper tearing in the wind. I did not turn around to look at him."I will put my things in a small bag," I said. "I want you to wait

  • Divorced, Desired, Dangerous    Chapter 95: ASH IN THE RAIN

DARIENI stood under a big black umbrella, holding it high over Nilah’s head.My suit was black and cold. My hands were freezing. My left eye was swollen shut from the cut, and my forehead burned with pain. But I did not care about my body. The pain inside my chest was too big. It felt like my soul was torn into small pieces.Beside me, Nilah stood completely still. She wore a long black coat and a dark veil over her face. Through the thin black lace, I could see her pale skin. Her dark eyes were fixed on the earth. She did not hold my arm. She did not lean against my shoulder. She stood close to me, but she felt a million miles away.In front of us sat a very small white box.It was resting on two thick green straps over the open grave. The white wood was smooth and bright in the gray rain. It was too small. It was too light to hold our whole world. An old priest stood at the edge of the pit. He held a small book in his wet hands, reading prayers about peace and heaven. His voice was

  • Divorced, Desired, Dangerous    Chapter 94: DARIEN

DARIENThe sun came up, but the penthouse stayed dark.I sat on the floor outside our bedroom door. My back was pressed hard against the cold wall. My clothes were dry now, stiff with dried blood and dust. My head hurt. My shoulder felt like it was on fire. But I did not care about the pain in my body. The pain inside my chest was too big. It felt like my heart was dead. The apartment was too quiet. The floor in the hallway was clean now. Marko’s men had washed away all the dark spots. They had fixed the doors. But they could not fix the smell. The sharp smell of soap and cold wind filled the dark rooms.Down the hall, the nursery door was half open.I looked at it. I could see the light green wall inside. I could see the edge of the empty wooden crib. Three days ago, my son was in that crib. He was small and soft. He smelled like warm milk. He slept with his tiny fists close to his face. Now, that room was just an empty box filled with cold air.I put my hands over my face and squeez

  • Divorced, Desired, Dangerous    Chapter 93: GONE

I stood there for three long, agonizing minutes, waiting for her to look back. Waiting for her to give me even a fraction of a glance. She didn't move. She didn't speak. She was a wall of cold stone, shutting me out of the grief, shutting me out of her life, leaving me completely alone in the dark.I turned around and walked out of the room, pulling the door shut behind me with a quiet, heavy click. The living room was an absolute disaster area, but Marko's men had worked fast. The bodies were gone. The heavy plastic bags had been hauled away through the service freight elevator in total secrecy. The blood on the dark hardwood floor had been wiped down, leaving behind only the damp, chemical smell of heavy industrial bleach mixed with the cold night wind still blowing through the open corridor.Marko was standing near the doorway, holding a fresh white towel and a dark pair of trousers over his arm. His face was pale, his eyes red and swollen from crying, but he maintained his rigid,

  • Divorced, Desired, Dangerous    Chapter 92: HIS LIFE

DARIENI stepped out of the shower, my feets squeaking against the wet tile. I didn't bother grabbing a towel. I didn't care about the blood still oozing slowly from the gash above my left eye, dripping down my cheek to join the cold water soaking my collar.I walked back into the bedroom like a man heading to his own execution. The bedroom was silent. The heavy blackout curtains were drawn, shutting out the pale, gray light of dawn that was beginning to bleed across the city skyline.Nilah was still lying on her side in the middle of the massive king-sized bed.She hadn't moved an inch. She hadn't pulled the heavy duvet over her shoulders. She just lay there, perfectly still, her dark eyes open, wide and fixed on the small, silent bundle wrapped in white wool resting on the pillow next to her.Alexander looked like he was sleeping. That was the most cruel, twisted part of it all. His features were calm, his tiny lips closed, his fine dark hair sticking slightly to his forehead. But t

NILAHThe silence in the grand ballroom was loud, it felt heavier than the rain that had ruined my car hours ago, making my head spin as I tried to process what my father had just blurted out from the podium.Hundreds of eyes shifted from my father, following his proud gaze, until they locked direc
