CLARISSA.

I turned around sharply just as I saw the shadow move to flank Devan and I, and I was shocked to my bones to discover that it had been the same man who had handled the position I now occupied all these years, the one man who had worked with the Montclair Group, and whom my father and I had trusted with the affairs of the company. I had noticed some odd movements from him in the past, and Devan had specifically asked me to be very careful around him, but never had I thought or imagined that he would be the one behind all the scenarios that had been happening all along, to the point that he was now actively after my life.

“Anthonio?” I blurted out, extremely dazed as I stared in disbelief. “It’s been you all this while?”

“It’s never been particularly about you, Clarissa,” he sneered, keeping his voice low. “It’s about the seat you stole.”

DEVAN.It had been a week since the shooting, and yet, even after days of being unconscious, I could still feel the pain in my arm like it had happened yesterday. Every breath I took with each passing day reminded me that I was slowly but steadily healing, but that my world wasn’t.I replayed the scene of the attack in my head like a reel, and I shook my head sadly at the memory. I had known deep in my guts that there had been something off about the whole arrangement, but because it was a corporate event with the members of the board of Clarissa’s company and investors around, and because it had been organized by Marcus Montclair himself, I had not exactly been able to pinpoint what made me feel very uneasy for more than half the time of the banquet. I had made sure to have every member of staff attending the event vetted at the entrance by men, made sure to recheck IDs, and made sure to have the whole area swept for any and every sign of possible threat. I had placed people in the k

ISABELLA.I continued to remain in the shadows, watching, learning and waiting, and for weeks now, I had kept on observing Clarissa sail through one issue or the other, through Anthonio’s attack and sudden disappearance, through Devan’s slow but steady recovery at the hospital, and as Bruce’s name continued to come up as the prime suspect at the rise of every scandal. But the juicy thing was that while Clarissa saw threats, I saw openings, new opportunities, and chances of getting back all that I had lost to her. Power never disappeared, it had only changed hands, and I had every intention of reclaiming it.The chaos that surrounded Clarissa was a dish I had carefully been preparing for months. The letters, the crest, the whispers about betrayal and about her instability were all elegantly and strategically timed and placed. What Clarissa saw each time as sudden and unprecedented hits were carefully planned plots by me, and as the tension grew thicker within the company and indeed wi

CLARISSA.I found my father in his study as always, sitting behind the massive oak desk that I’d grown to know. Shelves lined up behind him, bearing different awards and several family portraits — all symbols of legacy, influence, and achievements, but none of that mattered to me right now.I shut the door tightly behind me as I walked in, and I walked towards him, stopping a few meters away from his desk.“We need to talk, Dad,” I said flatly, still standing. He didn’t look up from the paper he was reading, his voice as calm as ever. “Well, good morning, Clarissa.”I paused for a moment. “Good morning, Dad. We need to talk.”“Okay. Talk,” he replied, flipping the page without interest.“Can I know Isabella’s true place in the company, and what you both have been discussing in recent times?” I asked him.He glanced up now, his eyes steady as he fixed his gaze on me. “Is that supposed to be a question, really?”“Yes,” I replied.“Isabella is my daughter as much as you are, Clarissa, an

CLARISSA.You’re dragging the Montclair name through the fire with every single move you make, Clarissa, and I'm not pleased with that. And to be honest, this family cannot afford another scandal with you at the center, one more time.My father’s words continued to re-echo in my ears hours as I walked out of his study in the penthouse and drove down home, and despite how much I tried to make sense of those words, I couldn’t bring myself to understand why my father, who had always been supportive of me and who had always been proud of every decision I made could no longer trust me. His thoughts towards me had obviously changed, and the one man within the family who had always championed my every move and had always stood solidly behind my decisions now seemed unsure of his stance. It could only mean one thing — either the person working from the shadows had now gotten to him, planting a seed of doubt in his he

CLARISSA.I sat alone in the study of my new apartment, reclined in my chair with a mug of coffee in my hands. The photograph Bruce had given me lay flat on the hard mahogany desk, its edges curling up lightly from how frequently I had handled it. My eyes caught something new each time I looked at it, shadows I had not noticed, and angles that showed access points only inner staff would know, but my focus returned to the crest on the figure’s cloak. A symbol I had believed to have belonged to just Bruce. Except that now, I wasn’t so sure anymore.I had sent a message to Bruce later on, requesting the full surveillance footage from which he had gotten the picture, and he had had a file sent to me, containing the full footage of the stairs of the penthouse, when I watched, I was surprised to see that the figure had moved with purpose, not caution. There was no urgency in the movement like someone who was supposed to be running for

CLARISSA.The hospital walls did little to reassure me of my safety, and each time I found myself within them, I felt a constant reminder that I was a walking target, and that whoever was playing the long game with me knew exactly where I was. Now seated beside Devan’s bed, my fingers loosely intertwined between his, I felt a whole complex feeling of exhaustion and confusion, while my mind continued to think of my next strategy.I hadn’t cried since the night of the attack, and all the while he had been unconscious, despite my will for the tears to fall, my tear ducts had stubbornly refused to produce any, not even when my father had stormed the hospital, anger in his eyes, vowing vengeance on the man and anyone else who had caused his daughter pain. But the tears had fallen that morning when Devan’s eyes opened, when he had smiled weakly at me. I had been so excited to see him awake, and I had been so relieved, knowing for
