“Damian… the husband, right?” Mike eyed Damian, giving him a nice smile. “I heard about you a lot from our friends. Nice to finally meet you,” he said before walking towards Damian to offer a hand.

That sure calmed Damian’s expression. He turned to Mike, stood up, and then shake his hand with a very little and unfriendly smile on his lips. I shifted my gaze to my son, Elon then.

“Likewise, Mike.” I heard Damian say.

I sat beside Elon. I snaked my right arm around his body to touch his small hand. It was there I noticed a black bracelet I’ve never seen before. Must have been from his dad… or my parents.

“That’s a beautiful bracelet..” I softly commented when I traced it with my fingers. “Is this hand-made?”

“Yeah.” Elon turned to me with a bright look on his face. “Aunt Elizabeth gave it to me.”

Hearing Elizabeth’s name rather than my husband’s, I was a little perplexed. Elizabeth was never close to Damian. She wasn’t even interested in him. That fact alone made it hard for me to maintain my smile.

“Did you thank her?”

“I did! She said she gave daddy one, too…”

I felt like I almost stopped breathing for a while, or maybe I really did. My eyes lasted at Elon for a moment, before my eyes went to Damian’s hand to search it. My gaze then halted at Damian’s left hand, it was exactly the same as Elon, and it made me lose composure.

Had it not been for Damian who cleared his throat, I would’ve remained dazed.

“I’ll get us something to eat. Excuse me,” said Damian before he went out of the room.

I knew Elon and Mike didn’t know anything about it but at that very moment I felt like I was humiliated. Like a laughing stock. I felt ridiculed and I didn’t know how to redeem myself, I was lost.

“Okay….” Mike sat in the chair where Damian sat. “Why don’t you tell me what my new buddy have? I could be of help.”

My lips purse. Though I managed to turn my gaze to Mike, I wasn’t able to respond right away, until Elon poked me.

“Oh..” I stood up, still stupefied, and grabbed my bag to get Elon’s medical consultation. I handed it to him, and then feebly went back beside Elon.

“Elon Dame Alistair, nice name.” Mike read Elon’s name and then give him a glimpse before going down to read it fully.

I watched his expression change from bubbly to serious as more seconds passed. I looked away and held Elon’s hand again, tighter this time. Then I was brought back to where I was supposed to focus on. Elon.

Elon and his condition. Not to Damian, and definitely not to Elizabeth.

“I see..” I heard Mike said, perturbed. He shot me a look. “I’d like to talk to you about this later this day. A coffee later this day.” Mike paused to glance at Elon. “Can I borrow your mommy tonight after you eat?”

Elon smiled and showed Mike his thumbs up. “Of course! Just make sure to bring Mommy back because daddy will surely look for her.”

Mike winked at Elon, before he returned his eyes at me. “I’m sorry, Elle. I didn’t know it was that…” He tilted his head, probably unsure of what term he will use, but I nodded my head to make him know that I get him.

“It’s fine. You haven’t seen Elon anyway so I had no reason to say no.” I gave him a warm look. “Eight this evening?”

He nodded, his concerned eyes toning down. “Eight this evening.”

Mike stayed to catch up with me. The same time, he tried to get to know Elon who seemed to like him despite meeting for the first time. Somehow, I felt a little refreshed. Talking to a friend I haven’t speak to for several years and sharing all the things that happened to me felt like I was given a new breath of fresh air. Though I wasn’t completely honest with him, and I really didn’t feel like I need to because I wasn’t really that open to anybody, it was open.

Talking to Mike was nice, and it took me back to when we were still college.

Our conversation was only disrupted when Mike noticed the time and realized that his break was already over. We already exchanged our contact number then so we’d just text each other later this day. I didn’t think we’d still talk about our personal lives but I had hopes that he might know someone to help Elon so I was interested in meeting him.

“You’re meeting Mike..” Damian deadpanned. “Elon told me.”

He was looking at me as I apply lipstick.

“He’s a doctor here,” I reasoned out. “I figured he might be able to help us get a good doctor for Elon.”

“Really…” Damian responded dryly. “And you weren’t able to talk about that matter earlier?”

“In frot of Elon?” My brows creased.

He didn’t respond. But the way he shot me a look was cold. I saw his jaw thickened before he looked away. And I didn’t know what was that reaction for so I ignored it. Did he not want me to meet Mike?

I breathed. I put back my lipstick inside and closed the bag. I took a glance at Elon who was peacefully sleeping, before I walked out the door with silence.

while."There was no filling up the hollowness of everything within me as the wind rustled all the trees and carried the sounds of birdsweet, somewhere off in the distance."I haven't any idea how I'm going to do things from now on," I admitted, my throat closing in. "I've spent years thinking about revenge; I've been planning to make everyone pay for what they did to you. But now... now there is Mike. And it is different. It is-," I expelled a hard breath and shook my head. "It's complicated."Silence.I looked up at the sky and at the drifting clouds that sailed lazily, thinking little of the storm brewing in me. "I don't know, Elon, if I can allow myself to even have one more thing. I don't know if I'm worthy."The words weighed down on me, but saying them out loud made them real, made fear real. For years, my life had revolved around one thing: revenge. If I opened myself up to something other than that, if I let Mike in... was I letting go my son? Before I could stop it, a single

The silence between us lasted for a while, until one could easily hear something. The café was tranquil, and out of its low hum of conversations from other tables, a storm brewed between the two of us. Mike was on me, fingering an absent tap against the table, while his expression remained unreadable. The weight of his silence pressed against me like an unspoken challenge.Outside, evening lights flickered against the glass, tracing long shadows over his face. His jaw tightened, and his usually crisp eyes softened in some indescribable way at that moment; it wasn't pity, nor was it concern; it was something deeper, more grave. Then at last he sighed, leaning vaguely forward over the forearms resting on the table. He said, "Eleanor, I need to ask you: And you have to be truthful with me."I met his gaze, one side of my head turning slightly as I said,"Go on."He hesitated for just a fraction of a second, something unspoken hanging around in his eyes. "This plan of yours… what's gonna h

Over the next few days, I worked on strengthening my alliances, moving cautiously everywhere and ensuring that every decision I made was purposeful. It was easy to bring Vincent Holloway to my side: his grudge against the Alistairs went deep, and I could use his hunger for vengeance. Amelia Greaves, however, had taken a little longer. At first, she was reluctant to come to my side because she feared what the Alistairs were capable of if they found out she was working against them, but I knew what to say to her. I gave her what the Alistairs never had: acknowledgment, some semblance of justice. And when she agreed to help, she did so with quiet determination.Through them, I uncovered something far worse than I expected. There were secrets with the Alistairs like with every other great family, but this was not mere financial corruption or backdoor dealings. This was something much more personal. Years ago, Charles Alistair had been involved in a cover-up of an accident—an accident that

From that day, I decided to keep a laylow. I pretended to ignore Damian and act as if I were busying myself with distractions. I had signed up for golf lessons at an exclusive club—something I had no real interest in—but this was my perfect excuse to eavesdrop and sneak watch those around me. If the A-list thought I was pulling back, I wanted to sell that idea to them as much as I could.A few days after giving it some thought, I got in touch with Charles to tell him I was ready for a meeting. He didn’t seem shocked. All he would say was that this deal would benefit me with the added bonus of clearing my name so I could get back to work with my clients. That much was helpful. The day finally arrived, and I walked into the Alistair estate exuding calm and assured confidence. I dressed for the occasion in a crisp white blouse with fitted black trousers: neutral, polished, unreadable. The grand dining room looked just as I remembered it—opulent, a mere smattering of sunshine failing to w

I absolutely knew what I was doing the moment my fingers brushed against Damian's wrist, lingering just long enough to make him tense. The air between us had been charged all night, heavy with a flavor neither of us wanted to name. But that wasn't reason enough to be here. I was here to unravel him, make him forget everything else-even if only for a moment. It had been boring, more polished smiles, more empty conversations. What made it most thrilling was how it felt to watch Damian. The sole fact that he followed me everywhere with his eyes, that his fingers tightened around his glass at every slight chuckle I offered at any other man's joke, almost made it a no-brainer to string him along."Eleanor." His voice had that warning edge, but it didn't fool me. It never had.I tilted my head and pretended to be harmless as I asked, "Something wrong?"He exhaled sharply, his jaw tight. "You know exactly what you're doing."I stepped closer, my fingers grazing the lapel of his suit. "And yo

I relived that thrilling night in my mind long after coming back home from the gala. The way Damian had looked at me, the way his breath had caught for just a fraction of a second - these were the moments I had been waiting for. He was still affected by me. Good. That meant I had an advantage, and I planned to use it.The soft light filtering through my curtains woke me the next morning with the faint ache of exhaustion still clinging to my limbs. A deep exhale escaped my lips, staring at the ceiling while mind-playing all the game from last night. I had taken the first step, but this was far from over. If I wanted Damian to fall into my trap, I had to make sure he came to me. I had to pull, not push. With this renewed motivation, I pushed myself towards the kitchen to brew some coffee. The rich aroma filled my apartment as I scrolled through my phone, scanning for any signs of his reaction. Nothing. No messages, no sudden calls, no desperate attempts to reach out.Of course not.
