Chapter 1

Alice Ortega tried to break free from Xavier Whitmore, but he held on to her tightly like a boy who refused to let go of his favorite toy.

They looked like they were reenacting Romeo and Juliet, a pair of star-crossed lovers.

What about me? Did my official title as the Donna count for anything?

I felt my blood run cold upon witnessing their interaction.

“Xavier, let go, we can’t…”

“I’ve already given you to my brother once. Do you expect me to let another man have you again?”

The veins on his forehead seemed about to pop. His usual calm and stoic demeanor was replaced with a torrent of anger and jealousy.

I had to wrap my arms around myself to stop myself from trembling.

Six months ago, I was kidnapped by a rat in the family. He held me hostage and used me as leverage to get Xavier to step down from his position.

Xavier seemed completely unfazed during the negotiation with the traitor. Then, when there was a moment’s distraction, Xavier gunned him down.

In my mind, he was always an expressionless, stoic man.

It was a shock for me to see that he could be brought out of his shell, capable of jealousy and wanting affection.

I supposed I was not worthy of his affection at the end of the day.

“Xavier, please listen to me and let go. We can’t do this, think about Grace…”

I delusionally waited for his response, only to hear him produce a long sigh.

“Five years back, I already told her not to hatch any ideas about me. She should know better by now.

“She already got the money she wanted, while I saved myself for you. We both got what we wanted.”

His words struck me like a heavy blow. It shattered the beautiful fantasy I had about us over the last five years.

All this time, I held out the hope that as long as I listened to him and stuck by his side, he would be touched by my devotion and come to develop feelings for me one day.

As it turned out, I had been delusional this entire time. It was all but a baseless fantasy.

“Grace, you're back!”

It was Alice who noticed me first.

She gasped while shoving Xavier away from her.

She regarded me with a look of cruel pity, as if she was sorry for me because she knew I was nothing but a replacement.

When Xavier turned around, the lingering warmth in his eyes dissipated the moment he made eye contact with me.

“Why do you look so beaten up?” He frowned while scrutinizing me from head to toe.

I observed my bloodied knees before wiping the blood of an underling from my face.

“The Moores attacked us in an alleyway at the Harvest Market. It was Annie who helped me escape.”

“Alright. Get a doctor. I'll take care of it tomorrow.” I finally caught a hint of anger in his voice, but it quickly reverted to his usual tone of indifference.

“Xavier, I... I want to talk to you in person.”

He glanced at his watch and frowned before brushing me off, “That can wait until I get back. I need to take Alice to... the hospital.”

“It's important. It won't take more than a few minutes.”

I was persistent.

Xavier's patience had finally run out. At last, he stated in a tone that was not to be defied, “Grace, you’re a Donna. You should have a better sense of judgment and know not to cause trouble.”

With that, he turned around and escorted Alice outside without bothering to look back.

The roar of his car’s engine soon faded into the distance, as if mocking me for my last five years of false courage.

With that, I turned around and slowly went up the stairs.

The wound on my knee hurt so bad that I had to clench my teeth through it. And yet, it was nothing compared to the agonizing feeling in my heart.

Upon entering the bedroom, I calmly opened the bottom compartment of the safe.

It contained the same divorce papers he had chucked at me on our wedding night five years ago.

“Grace, we are both in this to get what we want. If the day ever comes when you feel like you’ve had enough or if I feel like you are no longer qualified, this divorce agreement can be invoked immediately.”

I had had enough. Besides, I did not consider myself “qualified” anymore.

My hands were shaking as I carefully signed my name on the sallow, aged paper.

One year later.Somewhere amidst an island known for being a tourist destination, there was the sound of a baby crying.“Don't cry, don't cry, Daddy's here.”Noah gently settled the child in the cradle. His movements were delicate and practiced.I had an apron strapped around my waist and was stepping out of the kitchen with a tray of cut fruits when I witnessed the interaction. It was very heartwarming to see.“Is she trying to get your attention again?” I approached and leaned against his shoulder.“She just woke up. She must be hungry.” Noah turned around and kissed me on the forehead before asking, “Where are Rosalia and Annie?”“They took the tourists out for surfing lessons. They seem to be having a blast.” I smiled and shook my head.Noah and I had enough savings to live lavishly for several lifetimes. Regardless, we decided to run a resort on the island where I gave birth to our daughter, Sophia Gill.“The livestream is about to start.” Noah gently patted Sophia’s back

The wind in the cemetery was chilly and seemed to slice against Xavier’s cheeks.Though he stood gravely before Sam’s tombstone, he was smiling.Soon, he would return to Grace and take her on a honeymoon.By the time the car pulled into the manor, the sun was coming up.He stepped out of the car and swiftly entered the house, into the living room.“Where's the Donna?” he asked one of the housemaids assigned to nightwatch duty. The housemaid hesitated and tried to conceal her panic, “The Donna has been in your room the entire time and never came out…”Xavier had an ominous feeling.“No,” he grunted before rushing toward his room.He went straight to the dressing room and parted the coats out of the way before reaching for a mechanism. There was still a faint scent of Grace’s perfume mingling in the air of the secret passage. It must be Jakob. He was the only one who knew about the secret passage.Ten minutes later, two of his men brought Jakob into the living room.He was h

When the boat docked on the island, the shimmering sea was reflecting the radial glow of the sun above. As soon as I hopped off the boat, my feet sank into a soft cushion of sand, which blanketed my toes with warmth. The heat seemed to surge into the depths of my heart, and I felt like crying.I wasn’t dreaming.I made it out.“Grace!” I heard a familiar voice and looked up abruptly to see Noah calling out from under a coconut tree only a short distance away. He was wearing a white shirt and looked tall and as striking as ever.He took off and ran to me.“You’re back… Just like you said you would.” He pulled me into a tight embrace. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”The heat of his body coursing through me reminded me that this was real. I could smell the salty scent of the sea and the warmth of the sun from him. It was nothing like the nauseating smell of cigars on Xavier. At this point, I could not hold back anymore and started to cry.“Noah… I missed you so much.”T

I turned and entered his dressing room, where I carefully examined every inch of the wall.Jakob told me this was where I could find the secret passage leading to the back door. It was a feature they intentionally left behind when reconstructing the manor to serve as an emergency escape.I traced my finger against a bevelled panel and felt it loosen ever so slightly. When I applied pressure, the panel caved in as expected, revealing a narrow entrance. It was only wide enough for one person to pass through at a time.I mustered my courage and went inside. Soon, I arrived at a steel gate which I unlocked with the key. After I followed the passage to the back door, I heaved a sigh of relief. Then, I went back the same path I had come and draped several large coats over the entrance to keep it hidden. I made sure that there would be no signs to tip him off. Now, all I had to do was play the role of a wife who had “forgiven” him. When he woke up, all he remembered was me agreeing to

It was dark by the time I returned to the manor. I heard heavy footsteps approaching my door soon after I entered.“Grace, open the door.”Xavier reeked of alcohol, so much that I could smell it through a closed door.I hesitated for a moment before getting up to open the door.I found him perched right outside the doorway, his figure swaying slightly as if he was having trouble keeping his balance. Several buttons of his shirt were undone while his tie hung loosely around his neck. His deep gray eyes were bloodshot and fixed intently on me.“You…” His voice came out terribly hoarse when he spoke, “Why aren’t you hiding from me anymore?”I stepped aside to let him in while answering curtly, “As if there is any use in hiding.”He staggered into the room while casually tossing a bottle of liquor he was holding to the floor. Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and pleaded with a desperate look in his eyes, “Grace, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have forced myself on you, and I shouldn’t

After leaving Annie, I did not return to the manor right away, nor did I seek out Jakob.I was getting worried because my period was twenty days late.At first, I figured it was hormonal since my emotions were all over the place, and I had been losing sleep lately. Now, though, a brazen idea came to my mind.I had the driver take me to a nearby public hospital that was relatively out of the way. After doing a blood test and taking an ultrasound, I waited for a gruelling half an hour that felt like eons.“Congratulations, you're pregnant!” With a smile, the doctor presented me with a report.I felt my blood turn cold.My hand instinctively reached for my stomach. Though it was still flat, I knew that there was a child whose blood ran with mine and Noah’s.Though this was not an ideal time to become pregnant, it also felt like a ray of hope. All my hesitation and fear dissipated when it occurred to me that I was with child.I had to get out. I had to take my child and Annie and
