Chapter 2

Author: Beeping Squid
I cried myself to sleep, and when I woke up, I found myself in a pitch-black room. It was only then that I realized it was midnight.

After I carefully put away the divorce papers, the door behind me opened.

Xavier entered.

“You… Why are you here?”

I flinched when I saw him. He cast me an indifferent look before gesturing for me to sit up.

“The doctor came by just now, but since you were sleeping, I told him not to disturb you.”

Then, he knelt before me and opened a first-aid kit to apply some ointment for me.

His movements were gentle, so gentle that I felt they did not resemble the gestures of a Don whose life was always at a blade’s tip.

Just like that, I felt myself caving and melting for him all over again.

Although we never had any intimate relationship in the last five years, he was very protective of me and looked after me.

If someone badmouthed me, then he would have their tongues cut off.

If I saw a piece of jewelry I liked, he would hand me his card without another word.

Back when I was traumatized and afraid of the dark for an entire month after surviving the kidnapping episode, he made sure all the lights in the manor were turned on all day and night.

It was those little acts of kindness that made me fell for him.

“Xavier, I heard Alice is going to remarry. Is that true?”

His movements stiffened upon hearing this. Then, he spoke in a lowered voice, “Who told you that?”

“I overheard some of the men talking about it.”

My voice trembled when I spoke, “I heard the suitor was an heir to a bank? I heard he's a good man…”

“Ha, a good man?” Xavier sneered and suddenly tightened his grip around me.

I gasped from the pain. He seemed to have fallen into a dark and brooding state, as if he was unable to pluck himself out of the pit of emotions.

“He doesn't deserve her. No man in this world is worthy of her.”

Then, he got up and looked at me from above. All his tenderness had vanished and was replaced by an air of authority.

“Grace, what have I been teaching you for the last five years? You should know better than to ask questions you shouldn’t be asking.”

Then, he approached the window and lit a cigar, “I know how to handle Alice’s affairs.”

I felt an urge to cry upon hearing this.

Forget it. I could no longer lie to myself.

“By that, do you mean you’re going to stop her from remarrying?”

I lost all my senses at once. All I wanted now was to get a definite answer from him, regardless of how reckless it may be.

“Xavier, you told me that you can’t handle being physical with a woman, but I saw you hugging her today! You were hugging her so tightly! You lied to me!”

The silence was oppressive.

He narrowed the look in his eyes and sneered.

“Yes, and what about it?” He exhaled a puff of smoke, “She's the only exception. I’ve wanted her since I was sixteen, but my brother swooped in and took her from me.”

My tears finally fell.

“What about me? What am I to you?”

Xavier came closer and fixed a look on me.

“You’re a good, obedient, and competent wife who does a good job at keeping the elders happy.

“I can give you all the wealth and status you need on the condition that you don’t ask for what doesn’t rightfully belong to you.

“You’ve been getting more unruly these days. I’m disappointed in you.”

He sighed and turned to leave.

I sat stiffly as I stared blankly at what was ahead of me for what seemed like an eternity before I snapped out of it. Then, I grabbed several bank statements and some title deeds from a hidden compartment in the safe.

Then, I took a deep breath before dialing a private number.

“Rosalia, please sell off all the insured jewelry pieces.”

The person on the other end hesitated before asking, “Donna, it was the Don who gave them…”

“Are you my assistant or Xavier’s?” I cut her off, “I want you to cash them out within two weeks and wire the money directly to my personal account. If he asks about them, just tell him I lost them.”

It was only a couple of gemstones anyway. He would toss me another check without even batting an eye.

Xavier thought I couldn’t survive without his money and his occasional gestures of affection given out of pity.

He underestimated me.

Not only was I getting a divorce, but I was also taking his money and leaving for good. I was going to live the life I wanted.

One year later.Somewhere amidst an island known for being a tourist destination, there was the sound of a baby crying.“Don't cry, don't cry, Daddy's here.”Noah gently settled the child in the cradle. His movements were delicate and practiced.I had an apron strapped around my waist and was stepping out of the kitchen with a tray of cut fruits when I witnessed the interaction. It was very heartwarming to see.“Is she trying to get your attention again?” I approached and leaned against his shoulder.“She just woke up. She must be hungry.” Noah turned around and kissed me on the forehead before asking, “Where are Rosalia and Annie?”“They took the tourists out for surfing lessons. They seem to be having a blast.” I smiled and shook my head.Noah and I had enough savings to live lavishly for several lifetimes. Regardless, we decided to run a resort on the island where I gave birth to our daughter, Sophia Gill.“The livestream is about to start.” Noah gently patted Sophia’s back

The wind in the cemetery was chilly and seemed to slice against Xavier’s cheeks.Though he stood gravely before Sam’s tombstone, he was smiling.Soon, he would return to Grace and take her on a honeymoon.By the time the car pulled into the manor, the sun was coming up.He stepped out of the car and swiftly entered the house, into the living room.“Where's the Donna?” he asked one of the housemaids assigned to nightwatch duty. The housemaid hesitated and tried to conceal her panic, “The Donna has been in your room the entire time and never came out…”Xavier had an ominous feeling.“No,” he grunted before rushing toward his room.He went straight to the dressing room and parted the coats out of the way before reaching for a mechanism. There was still a faint scent of Grace’s perfume mingling in the air of the secret passage. It must be Jakob. He was the only one who knew about the secret passage.Ten minutes later, two of his men brought Jakob into the living room.He was h

When the boat docked on the island, the shimmering sea was reflecting the radial glow of the sun above. As soon as I hopped off the boat, my feet sank into a soft cushion of sand, which blanketed my toes with warmth. The heat seemed to surge into the depths of my heart, and I felt like crying.I wasn’t dreaming.I made it out.“Grace!” I heard a familiar voice and looked up abruptly to see Noah calling out from under a coconut tree only a short distance away. He was wearing a white shirt and looked tall and as striking as ever.He took off and ran to me.“You’re back… Just like you said you would.” He pulled me into a tight embrace. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”The heat of his body coursing through me reminded me that this was real. I could smell the salty scent of the sea and the warmth of the sun from him. It was nothing like the nauseating smell of cigars on Xavier. At this point, I could not hold back anymore and started to cry.“Noah… I missed you so much.”T

I turned and entered his dressing room, where I carefully examined every inch of the wall.Jakob told me this was where I could find the secret passage leading to the back door. It was a feature they intentionally left behind when reconstructing the manor to serve as an emergency escape.I traced my finger against a bevelled panel and felt it loosen ever so slightly. When I applied pressure, the panel caved in as expected, revealing a narrow entrance. It was only wide enough for one person to pass through at a time.I mustered my courage and went inside. Soon, I arrived at a steel gate which I unlocked with the key. After I followed the passage to the back door, I heaved a sigh of relief. Then, I went back the same path I had come and draped several large coats over the entrance to keep it hidden. I made sure that there would be no signs to tip him off. Now, all I had to do was play the role of a wife who had “forgiven” him. When he woke up, all he remembered was me agreeing to

It was dark by the time I returned to the manor. I heard heavy footsteps approaching my door soon after I entered.“Grace, open the door.”Xavier reeked of alcohol, so much that I could smell it through a closed door.I hesitated for a moment before getting up to open the door.I found him perched right outside the doorway, his figure swaying slightly as if he was having trouble keeping his balance. Several buttons of his shirt were undone while his tie hung loosely around his neck. His deep gray eyes were bloodshot and fixed intently on me.“You…” His voice came out terribly hoarse when he spoke, “Why aren’t you hiding from me anymore?”I stepped aside to let him in while answering curtly, “As if there is any use in hiding.”He staggered into the room while casually tossing a bottle of liquor he was holding to the floor. Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and pleaded with a desperate look in his eyes, “Grace, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have forced myself on you, and I shouldn’t

After leaving Annie, I did not return to the manor right away, nor did I seek out Jakob.I was getting worried because my period was twenty days late.At first, I figured it was hormonal since my emotions were all over the place, and I had been losing sleep lately. Now, though, a brazen idea came to my mind.I had the driver take me to a nearby public hospital that was relatively out of the way. After doing a blood test and taking an ultrasound, I waited for a gruelling half an hour that felt like eons.“Congratulations, you're pregnant!” With a smile, the doctor presented me with a report.I felt my blood turn cold.My hand instinctively reached for my stomach. Though it was still flat, I knew that there was a child whose blood ran with mine and Noah’s.Though this was not an ideal time to become pregnant, it also felt like a ray of hope. All my hesitation and fear dissipated when it occurred to me that I was with child.I had to get out. I had to take my child and Annie and
