登入Grandpa’s voice thundered across the room, his hands shaking with the cane he was holding.
Then a pin-drop silence followed.
The couple standing behind him, Mom and Dad, only exchanged glances, while Xander shifted uncomfortably in the bed.
Quietly, the Physician excused himself.
“Not one month, not two! Three years!!! For three whole years, you preferred to live out there with no sense of shame!!! This isn't the girl I trained you to become!!! You finally had enough suffering! Do you think I will forgive you easily!!!”
His words echoed, the tension rising inside the room.
The girl he trained me to be…?
He’d trained me to be far more miserable.
“Grandpa…”
Strangely, when I spoke, my voice no longer trembled like before.
I could even make eye contact with the man whose anger would give me panic attacks in the past.
“I only came here to see my brother. Not because I’m back.”
“You!” His eyes widened, his whole body shaking from rage.
Suddenly, the old man raised his cane.
“No!” Mom rushed forward and shielded me, her arms wrapped tightly around me.
“Annalise,” she cried, her voice a trembling whisper. “Stop trying to anger your grandfather. Will you end this stubbornness please? Grandpa only wants the best for you. Please come home, Dear.”
“Why are you protecting her!?” Grandpa pointed the cane at Mom instead. “I spent years training her to become valuable to this family, but you supported her to disrespect me and leave home.”
“Elise never incited Anna, Father.” Dad sighed. “Please calm down.”
“Grandpa, please leave Big Sis alone!” Xander whined from the bed. “Big Sis has suffered enough. Please don't make her leave us again.”
The old man frowned.
And then he dropped his cane.
But the storm of anger remained in his eyes, his deep glare directed at me. “It doesn't matter whether you have come to stay or not. Your brother is now useless and the family’s business will soon be in trouble. Since your engagement with Andrew Hale still stands, you will marry him so he can shoulder the family business.”
Andrew Hale…
Hearing that name not only brought back memories, but also a deep-seated trauma I’d suppressed many years ago.
My fists clenched instinctively in an effort to stop my shoulders from trembling.
“Grandpa…” I stared at him, my voice no longer calm but raw with anger and suppressed fear. “I. Will. Not. Marry Him.”
The silence that returned lasted longer than a minute.
The tension reached its peak, and the old man’s face burned with fury.
Mom let go of me, blood draining from her face, and she staggered backwards, falling against Dad.
As he caught Mom, Dad’s face reflected raw fear as well.
Three years ago, they all had this expression on their faces.
It was as if we were back in that same evening,
The night I left…
“Annalise, I won't ask you for the third time,” Grandpa grumbled, his eyes dark. “You will marry Andrew Hale.”
I swallowed.
Still meeting his hard stare, I opened my mouth to reply,
But Xander’s voice interrupted quickly, “Big Sis is the brains behind the company’s success!”
All eyes turned to him.
“Grandpa, before you do anything, please hear me out,” he continued. “I didn't contribute anything to the company’s success. Big Sis did.”
Mom blinked in shock, and Dad gave him a confused stare.
Grandpa only looked skeptical. “What do you mean by she’s the brains behind the company’s success? That's ridiculous!”
“Grandpa, I have evidence.”
Not long after, Xander’s assistant appeared with a briefcase that contained different files.
“These are all the evidence from the investigations we carried out.” He showed the old man. “Ms. Sterling is really the brains behind the company’s success.”
“That’s right.” Xander went on. “When I took over the position of the CEO three years ago, I started receiving letters in an envelope. Every time, they tell me something new. Those strategies helped me revive the company. And after years of investigation, I recently found out it was Big Sis who sent them.”
For the first time, Grandpa stared at me differently.
Mom and Dad appeared as if they were in a dream.
After a long silence, the old man cleared his throat, exchanging glances with my parents before speaking.
For the first time in years, the old man addressed me in a soft tone. “The evidence doesn't lie. So you weren't bluffing when you said you could manage the company three years ago.”
“Well, it's not too late,” he continued. “Forget about marrying Andrew Hale. You will run the company from now on.”
As his words landed, an inexplicable feeling filled my chest.
Then a dry laughter escaped.
“Grandpa…” My voice was light, too calm. “I am not interested.”
Our eyes met.It lasted less than a second. That was all. I continued walking, and the noise inside the conference hall resumed, drowning Aiden’s voice. After the summit ended,I sat in the backseat of the Maybach, slightly rubbing my forehead. Then my phone rang.Staring at the displayed name on the screen, an inexplicable feeling almost took over me… almost.Grandpa.Had he ever called me personally before?“I watched the summit, Annalise.” Grandpa cleared his throat. I remained silent, placing the phone to my ear.“Your delivery was acceptable,” he added. Then a brief silence followed.“I have already arranged for you to attend the Global Economic Forum next month. You’ll be speaking there as well.”My brows knitted together. “I didn’t agree to that.”“You don’t need to.” His tone remained calm. “You handled today’s summit. That means you’re capable of handling something bigger.”“Grandpa—““Three months,” he interrupted. “Since you’re determined to waste three months before run
Helen Harrison.Aiden’s mother. For three years, the woman had never hidden her dislike. In Helen’s eyes, I was nothing more than a woman who had gotten lucky and married above her status.Cassandra’s eyes also widened, and she looked around nervously. “Annalise? You also came to the summit?”“Of course, she did.” Helen scoffed, her gaze sweeping over me from head to toe. “How else would she find out that you and Aiden were attending?”“Aunt Helen, please don't say that.” Cassandra fidgeted nervously. Helen folded her arms. “Why not? Am I wrong?”She turned to me. “Annalise, this is a nationwide summit attended by only the country’s elite. What exactly are you doing here?”“Actually, never mind.” A mocking smile appeared on the woman’s face, and she gently pulled Cassandra close. “You should learn something from Cassie while you're here. Look at her. Young, talented, respected. In just a short time, she managed to become a top actress, and now she has even opened her own agency.”“Do
A few hours later. The chaos of the day had finally died down. Inside the CEO’s office, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, my eyes fixed on the bustling city below as I let the silence sink in.Time drifted by…Then my phone rang, a strange number displayed on the screen.I waited until it rang again. The third time, I answered, waiting for the other person to speak first.“Annalise…”Aiden’s voice.I wasn’t a bit surprised.“Why did you block my number? Where did you go? I searched everywhere, including that apartment I found you three years ago.”He paused, probably wondering if I was listening.“Annalise, are you there?” He trailed off for a while. “If Mom finds out you are gone, you know the consequences. I have already promised that we’ll try for another child. What else do you want me to do?”He sounded tired,Almost frustrated. As if my presence ever meant anything to him. I tapped the hang-up button. When the strange number called again, without hesitation, I blocked
If he had said this three years ago, I would be over the moon. For years, I’d longed after his admiration and acceptance.Strange how they now meant nothing to me.Grandpa narrowed his eyes, a look of disbelief flashing momentarily. “Not interested in what? Marrying Andrew Hale or running the company?”“Both,” I replied, dropping my arms.In fact, the conversation was already draining… so I turned for the door—“Anna!” Mom rushed to block my path. “Isn’t this what you've always wanted? Your Grandpa is finally letting you run the business. You don't have to marry Andrew anymore.”“Dear,” Dad came forward. “You have been secretly helping the business, which shows that you care. Don't try to make things difficult.”I wasn't trying to.Besides, caring didn't mean I wanted to be part of it.“Big Sis!”A crash!I spun and found Xander on the floor, struggling to crawl up to me.My heart dropped.Quickly, I rushed to support him, holding him carefully to not worsen his pain.“What are you do

I only glanced at the device once then went about my morning routine. After I was done, I picked up my phone to find several messages piled up.[Annalise, where are you? Why aren't you answering my calls?][Where did you sleep last night, Annalise?][What is going on between you and Alexander Sterling?][Are you still sad about losing the child? I already promised I’ll make it up to you.][I checked with grandma, and you weren't there! Annalise, answer my calls!]His phone call came in again right at that moment. Without a second thought, I rejected the call and tapped block on his contact. For three years, I’d let myself become someone even I couldn't recognize. This felt like waking up from a dream… no, a nightmare.I dropped my phone, sat down, and picked up the TV remote. A familiar face popped up instantly when I changed to the Central City’s News Channel, with a headline that had my heart instantly drumming against my chest.[Is This The Fall of The Sterling Empire?]“Everyone
