The loud bang of the door Emma had slammed shut right in front of his face did not make Zane back away. Instead of leaving with his pride wounded, the top actor's ego flared even more fiercely. The sting of such a blunt and painful rejection ignited an overwhelming possessive urge within him.

Emma's room door had not even been fully locked when Zane shoved it open from the outside. He strode inside with ragged breaths, the commanding aura he always carried in public now suffocating within the confines of the small hotel room. Without wasting another second, he grabbed Emma by the wrist and spun her around with a forceful yank until her back hit the door she had just closed.

"Let go, Zane!" Emma hissed, her eyes blazing with restrained anger.

"What's wrong with you, Emma?!" Zane demanded, his voice trembling low as he struggled to contain the storm of emotions threatening to explode. His grip around her wrist tightened even more, as though he feared that if he loosened it for even a second, this woman would disappear from his life forever. "What's gotten into you tonight? Huh?!"

Emma let out a bitter laugh, a hollow sound that struck Zane's ears with heartbreaking sadness. She did not struggle the way she usually would; she simply looked at him with eyes that had lost every trace of the admiration they once held.

"What's wrong? You're asking me what's wrong?"

"Yes! You never treat me this coldly!" Zane shouted, his face hardening with frustration. His jaw clenched as the memory of Emma pushing him away in the hallway earlier replayed in his mind. "You always..."

"You always what, Zane?" Emma cut him off sharply, her voice rising an octave and piercing straight through his ego. "Always humiliate myself in front of you? Always beg for your attention? Always act sweet and pretend to forget every woman you've slept with just so you wouldn't leave me? Is that what you want?"

Zane froze.

Emma's words struck him squarely in the chest. It was true. For the past seven years, Emma had been his safest harbor. No matter how many times his name appeared in the media alongside other actresses, Emma was always there in their apartment, preparing warm water and welcoming him with a warm embrace as though nothing had happened. Zane had grown accustomed to Emma's unquestioning acceptance. He had come to see her loyalty as something absolute, something that would never disappear.

"I'm tired, Zane. I'm really tired," Emma whispered, her breathing becoming uneven as the tightness in her chest slowly crept back.

"Emma!" Zane exclaimed, gripping both of her shoulders in frustration. "Why are you acting like this? Why are you making such a big deal out of something we've already made clear? We agreed from the very beginning that our relationship would stay this way, okay? We need each other, we're comfortable together, and I've always provided everything you need. A relationship without complicated commitments... this is what's best for us!"

To Zane, the word "marriage" was a terrifying shackle, something he refused to touch. And he believed that by giving Emma luxury and sharing his bed with her, it was more than enough to keep her by his side forever.

Emma looked at the man she had loved so deeply with eyes that grew dimmer by the second. Zane's words that night became the clearest proof that her seven years of sacrifice had never been worth more than satisfying his needs. Her head, still slightly dizzy from the lingering effects of the alcohol, felt even heavier.

With every bit of strength she had left, Emma jerked herself free, knocking Zane's hands off her shoulders. The distance between them widened once again, creating an invisible chasm far too deep to cross.

"Enough. I'm tired," Emma said, her voice flat and cold again, as cold as the ice water that had been poured over her face an hour earlier. She turned her back on Zane and walked toward the edge of the bed, refusing to look at his handsome face anymore. "You should leave now. If you're looking for warmth tonight, you should go find Violet Iris. I'm sure she'll be more than happy to satisfy you."

The name Violet coming from Emma's lips sounded like a slap across Zane's face. He clenched his fists tightly. His anger, his wounded pride, and his frustration at being unable to control the situation caused his rationality to vanish.

"Emma!" Zane roared, his voice thundering through the hotel room.

Emma did not move. She remained seated on the edge of the bed with her back to him, her posture rigid.

"Fine! If that's what you want!" Zane shouted in fury.

He turned around with heavy, angry strides, grabbed the doorknob, stormed out of Emma's room, and slammed the door with such force that the deafening bang shook the walls.

The moment the sound of Zane's footsteps faded into the hallway, the wall Emma had built around herself collapsed instantly.

Her shoulders, which had remained so rigid just moments ago, slumped in exhaustion. She drew her knees to her chest, buried her face against them, and finally allowed the tears she had been holding back to fall in silence. Her body trembled violently in the suffocating stillness of the hotel room. The pain in her chest felt so real, as though her heart were being sliced into thin pieces by reality itself.

Seven wasted years.

Seven years devoted to a man who had never seen her as anything more than a source of comfort.

Yet amid her silent sobs, the image of the mirror in Room 6009's bathroom suddenly flashed through her mind. The reflection of herself filled with determination, the memory of the mysterious and powerful middle-aged man named Lucas Moura Blackwood, and the blind dating application that had already recorded all of her information.

Emma roughly wiped away her tears with the back of her hand. Her breathing was still uneven, but the sorrow in her tear-filled eyes slowly hardened into determination.

"Be patient, Emma... Stay strong," Emma whispered to herself, her voice hoarse yet firm. "There are still twenty-three days left."

Twenty-three days.

That was all that remained of the one-month wager she had given Zane. Three final weeks before the Match-Prime application would process all of her data and match her with a complete stranger for a contract marriage. Emma swore that if, within those twenty-three days, Zane did not come crawling back on his knees to apologize and bring her a real wedding ring, then she would truly walk away.

She would let that marriage contract carry her as far away from Zane as possible and transform herself from an obedient assistant into the woman who would make Zane regret every inch of his foolishness for the rest of his life.

The air inside the spacious master bedroom suddenly transformed into something overwhelmingly dense, saturated with the heat radiating from two adults trapped in a vortex of ambition and pent-up desire. The challenging phrase that had just slipped from Emma's lips caused Lucas Moura Blackwood's dark eyes to narrow sharply. A dangerous flash flickered there, like a predator finally deciding to pounce on prey that had willingly surrendered straight into its trap.Lucas lowered his face, bringing his lips directly near Emma's ear until his warm breath scorched the skin of the woman's neck."You asked for it..." Lucas whispered in a low, raspy, and thoroughly lethal baritone voice, "... so enjoy the consequences, Emma."Without granting even a split second for Emma to take back her words, Lucas immediately lunged into a kiss. The man no longer held back; his lips landed with absolute demand upon Emma's perfectly exposed, slender neck. Lucas showered that sensitive skin with hurried, wet k

The embrace did not untangle immediately. In the middle of the frozen corridor's silence, Lucas Moura Blackwood's breath exhaled steadily above the top of Emma's head. Without offering a single word of response to the decisive question that had just been asked—about their wedding plans at the civil registry office tomorrow—the mature man actually took another action that was completely unexpected.Without warning, Lucas's brawny hand slipped beneath Emma's knees, and then in one motion so firm and full of strength, he lifted the woman's body off the marble floor.Emma let out a small gasp. Reflexively, both of her hands reached out to clutch the collar of Lucas's shirt to maintain balance, while her eyes widened in shock, looking at the face of the man close to her. There was no smile on Lucas's lips; there was only a firm jawline and a dark gaze storing thousands of secrets. With long, gallant strides, Lucas carried Emma in his arms, walking down the long corridor toward the main bed

The air on that top attic floor suddenly felt so thin, as if all the oxygen had been sucked out by the suffocating silence. The decisive sentence that had just slipped from Emma's lips hung in the air, buzzing loudly inside Zane Lancaster Blackwood's head like the strike of an iron hammer shattering his skull.Zane stood frozen, his two hands that had previously reached out to grab Emma slowly dangling limply by his side. His eyes widened broad, staring at the figure of the woman in front of him with a blank gaze that implied absolute destruction.Seven years. For seven long years, that woman had stood by his side, passing days full of waiting, weaving hope inside a narrow apartment before they reached this saturation point. And now, in just a matter of days since stepping foot into the Blackwood mansion, Emma threw away all those memories just like that and confessed to having turned her heart to his own biological father."Th... that fast, Emma?" Zane's voice was choked in his throa

Emma’s footsteps had just left the threshold of Mrs. Lusi’s room when a brawny hand suddenly grabbed her wrist from the side with a grip so fast and powerful. Before Emma could make a sound or turn around to see who was behind the insolent action, her body was forcibly pulled along the quiet mansion corridor."Let go! Where are you taking me, Zane?!" Emma protested in a restrained voice, trying to struggle and pull her wrist with all her strength. However, Zane’s grip felt like hot iron locking her movement. The man did not pay any attention to Emma’s curses or struggles at all. Instead of taking the woman downstairs, Zane dragged Emma up the hidden fire escape—an old spiral staircase that led straight to the very top floor of the Blackwood family mansion. That floor was the attic area for storing antiques and the building’s mechanic room, which had been uninhabited for a long time. The atmosphere was gloomy, filled with the aroma of dry old wood, fine dust floating under the dim glow

The air in the backyard suddenly felt incredibly heavy. The bright midday sunlight seemed unable to penetrate the tension that suffocated the open space near the swimming pool.Zane stepped forward quickly, his footsteps striking the garden's stone pathway with a firm and intimidating sound. His sharp gaze was fixed on Violet, who stood only a few steps away from Emma."What do you mean, Violet? Why are you talking like that?" Zane's voice broke the silence, low yet filled with restrained anger.Violet, who had been wearing a condescending smile in front of Emma, suddenly went pale when she saw the flash of anger in Zane's eyes. The woman blinked several times, instinctively taking a step backward."Zane... I... I was just telling this woman the truth," Violet replied nervously, trying to defend herself even as her voice began to tremble. "I was only saying that there's no way you could forget our relationship that easily and—""Who gave you permission to come here, huh?!" Zane snappe

Cold air crept through the gap of the master bedroom window that had not been fully closed, carrying with it the lingering moisture of the late-night city air. Lucas's final words hung in the air, leaving behind a sharp silence that pierced deep into Emma's chest. The man slowly withdrew, turning his back without waiting for a single word in response before walking toward the private study at the back of the room, leaving Emma in a state of profound bewilderment.Emma clenched both hands at her sides. Her breathing came slowly and heavily as she held back a surge of anger and resentment that was raging inside her. This marriage was merely about obeying Mother? Don't expect anything? Emma's mind screamed loudly. Her pride as a woman suddenly felt torn apart. She refused to be belittled, and she was even less willing to be trapped in the status of a neglected puppet wife. If Lucas thought he could treat her like an inanimate object, he was gravely mistaken. Emma swore to herself that sh
