Chapter Twenty Six

last update Data de publicação: 2026-08-10 16:33:40

After dinner wrapped up and I survived the rest of my mom and Richard talking about the wedding, I practically bolted straight to my room.

I looked at the digital clock on my desk: 9:30 PM.

Which meant I still had a solid hour and a half before my supposed 'study session' with Lael started at eleven. Thank god. I definitely needed a breather after dealing with his smug face across the dinner table.

First things first, I needed to get out of the clothes I'd been wearing all day. I grabbed a towe

Once outside, I crossed my arms and let out an impatient breath, staring down at the carpet."What is it, Mom?" I asked, keeping my voice low.She stepped closer, lowering her voice too, though she looked a little unsure of herself. "I just wanted to ask if you're comfortable in there. I don't know... I feel like you guys should have the lesson in the living room instead of his bedroom."My eyes went wide, absolute disbelief hitting me."I thought you were okay with it when he said it in the dining room!" I shot back in a harsh whisper. My mom winced slightly, looking away down the hall. "Yeah, because Richard was there! I didn't want to look like a... nagging control freak in front of him."I let out a slow breath, my irritation melting away into something a lot more exhausted.I already knew the exact real reason she was bringing this up right now. We had already talked about this yesterday, when she practically begged me not to fall in love with Lael. My mom was so insecure about o

"Good," I muttered, taking a step back to put some actual space between us before my brain completely melted down.I spun around and marched right back to the desk, pulling out the wooden chair and dropping heavily onto it. I cracked open my Sociology textbook, flipping straight to the first chapter like my life depended on it.A second later, I heard the sound of footsteps shifting across the floor, followed by the quiet creak of the mattress. I glanced over my shoulder.Lael had finally sat down at the edge of his bed, which was just a few feet away from the desk. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his bare knees with his hands loosely clasped together, watching me with those frustratingly bright eyes. "Alright, warden," Lael said, his voice dripping with playful amusement. "I'm sitting. I'm breathing clean air. Teach me."I just rolled my eyes, ignoring his stupid nickname completely, and cleared my throat to get down to business."Okay, page four," I said, pointing my pen

Thank god. I definitely needed a breather after dealing with his smug face across the dinner table.First things first, I needed to get out of the clothes I'd been wearing all day. I grabbed a towel and my oversized black slip nightdress, and headed straight for the bathroom. Letting the hot water wash away the exhaustion of everything.By the time I dried off, brushed my teeth, and got dressed, I checked my phone again.10:20 PM.Forty minutes left. Instead of just pacing around my room and stressing out, I figured I might as well get some work done. I pulled my heavy assignment out of my bag, sat down at my desk, and actually focused.Time flew by, and before I knew it, my eyes were st

I didn't even realize when sleep completely carried me away. Between the insane game, the arena drama, and dealing with Coach Irene in the parking lot, my body just completely shut down the second my face hit the mattress.I was pulled out of my deep sleep by a soft, polite knock on my bedroom door."Miss Avery?" a gentle voice called from the hallway. "Dinner is served downstairs."I blinked my eyes open, rubbing my face in confusion. The sky outside my window was pitch black, meaning I’d been passed out for hours."Yeah, sure," I mumbled with sleepy eyes, my voice raspy from being asleep. "Give me five minutes.""Of course, miss," the maid replied before her footsteps faded down the hall.I dragged myself off the bed, letting out a massive yawn as I stretched my stiff arms. I quickly caught a glance of myself in the mirror—my hair was a messy, wild nest on one side, and my cardigan was completely wrinkled. I ran a hand through my blue hair, and tried to smooth down my clothes.Feeli

My mom appeared from around the corner of the hallway, holding a stack of glossy wedding magazines. The second her eyes landed on the two of us standing in the foyer, a bright, hopeful smile broke across her face."Oh, perfect!" she said, bustling toward us. "You guys are back just in time!"Before I could even open my mouth to answer, Lael took a smooth step back toward the open front door, grabbing his car keys out of his pocket."Actually, Karen," Lael said, giving my mom an effortlessly charming smile that totally disguised his eagerness to escape. "I just remembered I have something I need to go take care of with the guys.""Oh," my mom said, blinking in surprise. "Right now?""Yeah, team stuff,” Lael drawled, flashing me a quick, mischievous smirk before slipping out the front door.A second later, the heavy wooden door shut, and I heard his car engine roar to life in the driveway before he completely zoomed off down the estate. My mom let out a soft sigh, watching the door clos

Lael rounded the front of the car, tossed his heavy duffel bag into the backseat, and slid into the driver's seat. Outside, Coach Irene stood frozen on the asphalt for a second before turning on her heel and hurrying away toward the athletic wing.He pulled the driver's door shut, the heavy thud cutting off the quiet ambient noise of the parking lot. He didn't immediately turn the key in the ignition; instead, he rested his wrists on top of the steering wheel and turned his head to look at me, those sharp blue eyes taking in my tense posture."What was that about?" Lael asked, his voice low and raspy from the cold air of the rink.I let out a dry, irritated breath, looking straight out the windshield. "Why don't you ask your concubine?"A beat passed, and then a slow, amused smirk spread across Lael's face. "Is that what we're calling her now?"I just rolled my eyes, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a verbal response, and leaned back into the leather seat.Chuckling softly un
