Karma's POV

One month later...

People always assumed that life stopped when someone was standing trial for murder.

It didn't, life had the audacity to continue.

Patients still arrived at the emergency room, children still cried after getting stitches. Mothers still waited anxiously outside operating theatres. Surgeons still scrubbed in, made incisions, closed wounds and moved on to the next case as though the world outside those walls wasn't threatening to collapse.

I never stopped doing what

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 37

Noah's POVSomething was burning.I stood over the stove, frowned at the saucepan and turned the heat down. I had absolutely no business attempting a new recipe after work.I had called Karma's Secretary earlier today, when she wasn't answering her calls and she had told me that Karma is a surgery that would take hours. So I'd already expected that I won't see her today. So I decided to surprise her another day. When I got back from the office not too long ago, I had already messaged her and told her to go home and rest, I can just imagine how tired she was.Besides, I needed the distraction, work had been unbearable. The investigation department had spent the entire morning drowning in paperwork after a series of coordinated raids, and my partner, Ethan Brooks, had forgotten an important case file at the station. His wife volunteered to bring it over."You don't have to," Ethan said he had told her, but she said she was already on her way here. At the very least, I'm a bit close to h

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 36

Karma's POVThere was something wonderfully ordinary about my life now.It felt strange admitting that to myself. For weeks, my mornings had begun before sunrise, my days disappeared inside operating theatres, my evenings belonged to Noah more often than they belonged to me, and somehow I had started looking forward to every single part of it. I had spent most of my life surviving. Now, for the first time, I was living and that alone frightened me. Because people like me always expected happiness to be temporary. The morning began with a disagreement. Dr. Pettersen, of course it was Dr. Pettersen. He was standing outside Operating Theatre Three before my first surgery, holding a patient's chart with the kind of confidence only people who were completely wrong seemed to possess."I already approved this procedure," he said.I took the file from him and scanned it. "No," I answered calmly. "You approved the wrong surgical approach."He frowned. "The patient's scans clearly show…""The p

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 35

Karma's POVLife didn't suddenly become perfect, it simply became... lighter.I still woke up before sunrise for surgeries. I still spent endless hours in operating theatres with blood on my gloves and lives resting in my hands. I still attended board meetings, signed hospital documents, and argued with consultants who thought they knew better. But somewhere between all of that… there was Noah. Without either of us talking about it, he quietly became part of my routine. He would wait outside the hospital with coffee after particularly long surgeries. Sometimes he picked me up after work and drove us to small restaurants hidden away from the city.Sometimes we never even made it to a restaurant, we bought takeaway food and sat by the harbor, watching boats drift across the water while talking about absolutely nothing. Those evenings became my favorite, I had never known life could be this peaceful."You've been smiling a lot lately." Sandra's voice startled me as she placed another pat

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 34

Karma's POVBy the time I pulled into Noah's driveway, the sun had already begun its slow descent behind the city skyline.I sat inside my car for another minute with both hands resting on the steering wheel., head bowed with thoughts flying through my mind. I wasn't sure what had brought me here.Maybe it was everything that had happened over the past few weeks, maybe it was discovering the death of someone I didn't think could just die like that, or maybe it was standing in front of Enzo’s grave and realizing that life had a cruel habit of ending before people got the chance to say the things they really meant.Or maybe… Maybe I simply missed him. The realization made me smile to myself.A few months ago, I wouldn't have believed I could miss another human being this much, now I found myself driving across the city just to hear Noah Adler tell me to come inside.I climbed out of the car and walked toward his front door, before I could knock twice, the door swung open. "Karma?"His s

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 33

Noah's POVThe first few days after Karma left my apartment were torture.Karma Kuntz had spent most of her life protecting herself. Running after letting someone get close was almost expected. What frustrated me was what came after. She disappeared, every text I sent received a reply hours later.Every phone call was answered with, "I'm in surgery." Or, "I'm at work.” Or simply, "Talk later."I knew she wasn't lying. She was just... hiding, from me, herself and most especially from us. She always created time for me amongst her busy schedule.I could have pushed harder, demanded answers, even asked whether she regretted what happened between us.Instead, I waited, because loving Karma meant understanding that every time she took a step toward me, it cost her something.Still...Waiting wasn't easy....Work usually distracted me, usually not all the time. Today it didn't.The homicide division was louder than normal, phones rang constantly, detectives walked in and out carrying files

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 32

Helena's POVJustice has a peculiar way of disappointing the people who believe in it the most. I learned that long before Marcus Kuntz died, long before what happened to Theon. Long before Karma Kuntz walked into my life and forced me to look at myself without the comfort of excuses. For years I had worn the robes of a judge, believing that the law, however slow, would eventually reach everyone. It doesn't, sometimes it doesn't even try, some monsters never hide. They simply sit behind polished desks....The first file landed on my desk almost three years ago. It wasn't marked urgent, it wasn't classified, but rather it was simply ignored.A seventeen year old girl had disappeared after naming the son of a senior government official as her attacker. The investigation stalled within forty-eight hours. Witnesses suddenly changed their statements. Evidence went missing. The officer handling the case was transferred and the file was quietly archived. I reopened it, to see what I was mis

Chapter 5The police car smelled like stale coffee and leather.Karma sat in the back seat, hands folded in her lap, watching the city pass through the tinted window. Buildings blurred into each other. Traffic lights, people walking in a hurry, an old woman walking a dog almost like she was crawli

Rosa's cleaning supplies fell to the floor and scattered. The spray bottle rolled across the carpet, leaving a trail of blue liquid running through the blood. The sound tore from her chest, echoing everywhere, filling the hallway as the once rowdy, loud and dirty hotel became empty that morning. • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 3

Karma sat back in her booth, lifted her untouched drink, and watched her father drain his fourth glass of whiskey.Mia walked fast. She changed into something tighter—a red dress that barely covered anything. Reapplied her lipstick. Sprayed more perfume. Then catwalked straight to Marcus's table, l

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 1

Marcus stumbled backward, his shoulders hitting the mattress. The woman's hands pressed against his chest, pinning him there. Her perfume—something sweet and seductive, filled his nostrils. His fingers moved toward her hips. She stopped them, pressing one manicured finger on his lips with the corne
