Chapter 11

작가: Cheese Dumpling
It was sunny earlier this morning, but now the sky had turned dark, as if a massive black cloth had been draped across it.

Thunder rumbled, lightning streaked across the sky, and the rain came pouring down.

The gates of the mansion opened from the inside. Marcus stepped out, holding an umbrella.

Joel hurried out of the car and asked respectfully, "When will my sister come out?"

"Mr. Montgomery accidentally damaged the design draft. Ms. Youngblood is upstairs reworking it. Please be patient, Mr. Youngblood," Marcus explained.

Without giving Joel a chance to respond, he quickly turned and left.

Joel checked his watch. Elena had been inside for over an hour now. What was taking Nicholas so long?

Fearing something might have happened to Elena, he caught up with Marcus. "My sister's afraid of thunder. I'd like to go up and keep her company."

Marcus turned around. "The mansion has excellent soundproofing. She can't hear what's going on outside. There's no need to worry, Mr. Youngblood."

With that, the gates slowly closed.

Drenched in the rain, the villa looked like a dragon with its mouth wide open. As Joel looked at it, he lacked the courage to charge in.

They'd fought hard to secure the Aster Avenue deal. There was no room for mistakes now.

Upstairs, in the study, Nicholas sat on the couch, swirling a glass of red wine in his hand.

Marcus knocked and entered. "Mr. Montgomery, I've informed Joel as you instructed. He must wait, no matter how long it takes."

Nicholas waved him off, and Marcus left.

Once the door was closed, Nicholas stood up and walked toward Elena. He casually leaned on the desk and asked, "How many years have you been at this?"

Elena knew what he was asking about. Without looking up, she replied, "Since I was a child."

"You think you're a natural-born genius, don't you?"

"Well, I am," Elena replied without a hint of modesty. Her hands never paused in their work. "I've been drawing since I can remember."

Nicholas had never met a woman quite like this—a goody two-shoes when quiet but sharp-tongued the moment she spoke.

He raised his glass and finished the wine in one go before casually placing the empty glass on the desk. "Your father was a genius in architecture, and Salvatore Group was a leader in the field.

"It's not surprising that you can draw since you were a child. But without years of hard work, it's hard to truly master the craft."

Elena was just joking earlier. She majored in architectural design in college.

Thanks to Edgar's influence, she picked things up quickly and had a natural talent for design. Once given a concept, she could design a piece in no time.

"You ran a background check on me?" Elena asked.

There was a quiet pause in the room, the only sound being the soft scratch of her pencil against paper.

Nicholas' gaze shifted to the hair clip in her hair. His eyes darkened. "Not just you. Everyone who works with me needs a background check."

Elena was still shocked by how cautious he was when she suddenly felt the pressure on her head ease. Her long hair tumbled down like a waterfall.

In Nicholas' hand was the newly bought hair clip. "This isn't your style."

"Give it back." Elena turned, trying to grab it back.

She had just lost one hair clip. If she lost another tonight, who knew what Remus would do to her?

Nicholas leaned in closer and whispered in her ear, "I prefer your look yesterday."

Elena shivered under the warmth of his breath but looked at him with a playful smile. "Oh, really? I thought you weren't interested in women. Even if I were to undress in front of you, I assumed you'd stay indifferent."

"Want to test it?" Nicholas grabbed her hand, pulling her up from the chair. Before she knew it, she had fallen against him.

It wasn't even noon, but the sky outside was dark as dusk from the weather.

Inside the study, though, it was as bright as day. The lights cast a glow on Elena's soft skin.

As Nicholas' gaze locked onto her lips, his eyes darkened.

They had been in the same position that night. She had lain on top of him in a similar bodycon dress. Her body was so soft, like it had no bones.

He had kissed her passionately for what felt like an eternity, almost losing control.

Now, Elena was just as tempting.

Nicholas cupped her chin and kissed her again.

He had never been affected by women.

The loss of control that night had been influenced by the effects of the drug, but there was something about Elena's presence that pulled him in, like an addictive drug he couldn't escape.

Elena, noticing the dazed look in his eyes, moved her lips and whispered in his ear, "Don't you need the design draft anymore, Mr. Montgomery?"

Her soft, flirtatious voice stirred something in him.

But Nicholas didn't let go. Instead, he cupped the back of her head for a deeper kiss. "You can draw it later."

However, Elena pulled away and pushed him slightly. "Joel has been waiting for a while. He must be growing anxious."

Nicholas, losing interest, released her and stood up. "Congratulations. You're now in charge of the Aster Avenue project."

"What do you mean?" Elena asked, confused.

But before she could get an answer, Nicholas had already left the study.

A moment later, Marcus appeared at the door. "Ms. Youngblood, Mr. Montgomery asked me to escort you downstairs."

Once Elena got in the car, she heard Joel speaking to Nicholas on the phone.

"Elena may be good at drawing design drafts, but she's unfamiliar with the project. Assigning her full responsibility may not be wise, Mr. Montgomery."

It was then that Elena realized what Nicholas had meant by his last comment. He had decided to hand her the Aster Avenue project.

It was like a slap in the face to Joel. After all, his plan to use the project to solidify his position had just fallen apart.

She didn't hear what Nicholas said on the other end, but Joel's face darkened as he hung up.

He tossed the phone aside. When he turned to Elena, suspicion was clear in his eyes. "Did you say something to Mr. Montgomery? Why would he suddenly give you the project?"

Elena, wiping rainwater from her hands with a handkerchief, replied, "Joel, you think too highly of me. I only know how to design. Negotiating isn't my forte."

Joel's chest tightened with frustration.

She had spent more than three hours with Nicholas inside there. Now, she still smelled faintly of him.

Joel lost control and grabbed her neck. "Don't try to seduce him. You're mine."

"Joel, it hurts."

Tears welled up in Elena's eyes, making her look helpless and vulnerable.

Seeing her face grow pale, Joel panicked and immediately released her. "I'm sorry, Elena. I just care too much about you. I didn't mean to hurt you."

Elena pushed him away and looked at him coldly. "I've been drawing for over three hours. I'm tired. Please take me home."

Joel noticed the ink stains on her hands and paused.

Had he been overthinking? Was she really just working on the design upstairs?

On the second-floor balcony, a tall figure stood, watching everything below with a keen eye.

"Mr. Montgomery, it seems that Ms. Youngblood's relationship with Joel is more than just siblings."

What kind of brother would grab his sister by the neck and hold her so intimately after he'd calmed down?

Marcus had seen enough to tell that something was off.

Nicholas flicked the ash off his cigarette and replied in a tone that revealed no emotion, "Look into their relationship. And I want to know why the Salvatore family suddenly went bankrupt back then."

"You certainly have an unconventional way of wooing a woman," Elena remarked with considerable resignation. Nevertheless, she still accepted that piece of steak Nicholas offered, opening her mouth to receive it. That steak, perfectly pan-fried to a melting tenderness, exuded an enticing aroma. However, within Elena's mouth, it yielded no discernible taste."I don't woo women," Nicholas declared, his gaze fixed on the delicate movements of her rosy lips as she ate. That subtle movement of her delicate lips unexpectedly evoked the sensation of their kiss, causing a sudden flush of heat to rise within him.Though countless women had tried to approach him, he had never allowed them any intimacy, let alone the opportunity to dine with him, much less be personally fed by him. Yet, Elena was an exception. He felt a surprising reluctance to turn her down, and he found himself wanting to indulge her after witnessing her flirtatious charm.Elena picked up her napkin, wiped her mouth, and sa

"It's a deal, then!" Elena exclaimed, thinking that no one could possibly turn down such a deal with such a lucrative sum. It was especially the case considering Nancy's ongoing and substantial medical expenses. In addition, Nancy could even move forward with her second operation with this sum."I don't have much energy, so it'll take me a while."Nicholas readily consented, saying, "I'll give you three months."Having reached an agreement, Elena asked Nicholas to transfer the money to Frank's account. She had majored in architectural design back at university, having also enrolled in an elective course in sculptural arts. It was something the Youngbloods were aware of as well. Remus had permitted her to engage in sculpting at Youngblood Manor, as long as it didn't interfere with her architectural design work. Her usual sculptural endeavors consisted of small, unexceptional items.Talia had always mocked her for it, dismissing her as an inept craftswoman. She remained unperturbed

Elena's kiss was hurried and somewhat unrefined, clearly revealing her inexperience. Nicholas was momentarily stunned, wondering why Elena would suddenly put on such a display of affection when Joel was still sitting in the car outside of Hawthorne Estate. He couldn't help but wonder what Elena's intention was. Nevertheless, he still couldn't resist Elena's delicate touch. He held her waist firmly and returned the kiss fervently. Their passionate encounter moved from the balcony to the couch, and it was only when her breathing became labored that Nicholas finally stopped."I'd like to strike a deal with you, Mr. Montgomery," Elena said, lying underneath him. Her clothes were in disarray, and there was a delicate flush adorning her pale complexion. Her petite mouth, especially, now thoroughly kissed and gently swollen with a glistening dewiness, presented an almost irresistible temptation for further passionate exploration.Nicholas kept his composure, lit the cigarette, and asked

Joel no longer wished to be subjugated by Remus. He wanted to get rid of Remus, no matter what.In the end, Elena left Youngblood Manor with Marcus.Nicholas really went all out, having Marcus drive a specially modified MPV to pick her up. Elena didn't even feel the slightest bump throughout the journey, even on the entire journey up the mountain. She experienced neither motion sickness nor vomiting. Then, just as she was about to get out of the MPV, Marcus thoughtfully approached her and asked, "Could you please wait a moment while I get the wheelchair, Ms. Youngblood?" "It's alright. I can manage on my own," Elena responded, a slight smile gracing her features. She couldn't help but muse about Nicholas' chivalry. She had only mentioned in her message that she felt a little weak, and he had already prepared a wheelchair for her.Elena couldn't help but hope that Nicholas would personally show up next time and carry her in his arms instead of providing her with a wheelchair.H

Talia still had a life ahead of her, but Elena's parents were gone forever. Edgar's cremains still lay exposed to the elements, enduring wind and rain, while Amber's cremains were confined within four walls, their reunion perpetually denied. Joel wanted her to feel sympathy for Talia, while her late parents were denied such sympathy. Who would extend compassion to her parents and grant them peace?Joel assured Talia, saying, "I swear I'll find a way to retrieve your mother's cremains and lay her to rest peacefully."Elena said coldly, "I'll consider it once you've obtained the urn.""Why do you have to be this heartless, Elena?" Joel snapped, his tone sharpening as his patience wore thin.Elena turned her head toward the window and replied with a sneer, "It's because she doesn't deserve any forgiveness." No sooner had she spoken than George's voice came from outside. "Mr. Youngblood, a representative from Mr. Montgomery has arrived."…Marcus was standing in the living hall dow

It was then that a crisp slap sound echoed throughout the surroundings.Elena was standing by the railing with her gaze fixed on the scene in the study, taking it all in. That agonizing past was brought up once again, and the truth was brutally unveiled, a raw and bloody spectacle that tore through her like a physical dismemberment, leaving her in unbearable agony.Elena gripped her pajamas tightly, her eyes brimming with unfiltered hatred.Joel's rebellion was finally underway. Given that Joel and Remus were at odds, they were bound to have a deadly confrontation eventually, causing their own downfall.Elena refrained from further eavesdropping and retreated to the attic. She, too, had once been a recipient of Remus' deceptions. Talia was undeniably the most foolish member of the Youngbloods. However, it was her very being that fueled the flames of this ongoing dispute, allowing it to rage ever stronger! …Elena woke the following morning to find only Blake by her side, conduct

Elena checked the time and finally realized that she had been unconscious for three days. Her body had been alarmingly weak after returning from the cemetery three days earlier. She was worried that the Youngbloods would go through her phone if she lost consciousness, so she had directly blocked Nicholas' number to prevent him from sending any suggestive messages that would create an unmanageable situation later on. She reasoned that Nicholas' failure to contact her had led him to instruct Marcus to message her instead. Having accepted that message request, Elena immediately received a message, stating, "I heard you weren't feeling well, Ms. Youngblood. How are you feeling now?"Elena figured that Nicholas must have gotten hold of Joel and found out that she had been unwell."Thanks for your thoughtfulness. I'm mostly alright now."Marcus didn't respond for quite a while.Elena was on the verge of putting her phone away when a message came through. "Unblock me."It was unm

Megan had been subjected to the punishment of kneeling in the family mausoleum by Remus, an ordeal that had so profoundly terrified her that she had developed a mental illness. Talia didn't want to end up like Megan, who was confined to a mental hospital after losing her sanity."It's not entirely Talia's fault, Dad. Please have mercy on her this once, for the sake of her being your flesh and blood," Joel said, protecting Talia again. He had been too weak and helpless in the past to stop Megan from being sent away. He had the means to oppose Remus now, so he wouldn't allow Talia to go through the same ordeal as Megan."How will she ever learn her lesson without some punishment?" Remus asserted, summoning George and insisting on sending her to the family mausoleum."Please don't let them take me away, Joel!" Talia pleaded through her tears."I will not allow anyone to lay a hand on her as long as I'm here!" Joel declared, pushing George away and shielding Talia with his body.Joel'

  • Dropping the Act   Chapter 22

Elena remained unconscious for three days, during which Nicholas' attempts to contact her by phone were unsuccessful. He then sent her a message, only to find out that he wasn't even on her contact list. He realized that she might have blocked his number, so he called Joel with a grim expression and said, "I can't even reach the designer when we're about to kick off the project. Is Youngblood Corporation trying to screw me over?"Joel, who had just arrived at work, took the call and immediately began to smooth things over. "You've got it all wrong, Mr. Montgomery. I assure you that Youngblood Corporation is still fully committed to this partnership. You see, the reason Elena hasn't been in touch with you these past few days is that she has been feeling unwell. I'll make sure she calls you back the moment she's feeling better." Upon hearing that, Nicholas couldn't help but furrow his brow. He scoffed a moment later, thinking that though Elena was sick, she still somehow had the ener
