登入Chapter Six
The next morning, I woke up and discovered that Lucas was already up and dressed for work. He was adjusting his watch when he noticed me looking at him. He was breathtaking, with a natural beauty that seemed to require no effort. “Good morning,” I greeted him, looking away and trying to hide the admiration I felt for him. “Good morning,” he replied. His voice was husky and slightly deep, which caught my attention more than anything else. I tried to pull myself together. I nodded and swallowed hard, doing my best to remain calm as his fresh scent filled my senses. He sat a little closer, while still maintaining a respectful distance. “Careful,” he said as I stood up, nearly losing my balance as I headed toward the bathroom. “Thank you,” I muttered, hurrying inside before embarrassing myself any further. I entered the bathroom and let out a frustrated sigh; finally alone, I felt almost relieved. This was harder than I had imagined. I lightly slapped myself several times and washed my face, hoping it would help calm what I was feeling. I looked at my face in the mirror again, reminding myself that this was only for a limited period and that I would eventually forget him, or this marriage. “Diana,” he called. “I’m coming,” I replied, after managing to regain some of my composure. I returned to the bedroom to understand why he had called me. “Grandpa wants to see us again. So we’ll go to the hospital later,” he informed me. I couldn’t deny that I was also looking forward to this visit. “Okay,” I replied. He nodded in agreement before leaving the room, finally allowing me to breathe a little. I headed to the shower, washed carefully, then went downstairs to the dining room to enjoy the meal prepared by the chef and served by the maid. I ate alone, since Lucas seemed to place more importance on his work than anything else. The maid came in and, as she was about to clear the table, I took the opportunity to ask if she could prepare a lunch to be delivered to Lucas. She did as I asked, and I had it sent to his office. I began getting ready for the visit to his grandfather. The scheduled time was already approaching. I wanted to look my best since I was going there with Lucas. Among the dresses I had bought earlier, I chose one. Once I was dressed, I admired myself in the full-length mirror, unaware that he had entered. I wondered how long he had been standing there without me noticing until he cleared his throat softly, making me turn around. A thousand and one thoughts crossed my mind. “Grandpa is waiting for us… let’s go.” I followed him as we went outside and headed toward his black Maybach parked in the garage. We both got in, and the driver started the car, taking us toward our destination. I didn’t say a word, constantly fiddling with my phone, simply looking for something to distract my attention. Lucas turned his gaze toward me. “Thank you for lunch.” “You’re welcome,” I replied with a smile. My stomach tightened slightly. “I’m glad you liked it.” But what he said next shocked me. “Next time, avoid taking initiatives without talking to me about them.” My eyes widened in astonishment. I was stunned. What I had intended as an innocent gesture… I couldn’t believe he could see it that way. We arrived at the hospital and went in to see Grandpa. My mood immediately lifted when I saw him. The way he welcomed me brightened my mood so much that I forgot what Lucas had told me earlier. “How are you feeling, Grandpa?” I asked. “I’m very well, especially now that I see you, my little Diana,” he replied. I smiled as he showered me with compliments, making me blush intensely. He took my hands, and his next words left me speechless. “So, when are you two going to give me grandchildren?” My whole body trembled when he said those words. “Grandchildren…” I murmured. “Yes,” he replied. Lucas intervened: “Grandpa, you should focus on getting better first,” he said in a calm but firm tone. “I’ll recover faster if I have a good reason to be happy.” Lucas stepped closer. “We’ll talk about it another time,” he added. Grandpa sighed. “Fine, you young people always think you have all the time in the world.” I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. Lucas’s hand briefly brushed against mine as he helped his grandfather adjust his pillow. I quickly withdrew my hand, clasping both hands together to steady myself. “Have you taken your medication?” Lucas asked, changing the subject. “Yes, yes. The nurses make sure I take them,” Grandpa replied with a mischievous smile. After a while, Lucas checked his watch. “We should go. You need to rest.” Grandpa nodded reluctantly. “Okay. But both of you come visit me again soon.” We were about to leave the room when Lucas walked out first. Just as I was about to follow him, Grandpa’s voice stopped me. “And Diana…” I turned around. “Yes, Grandpa?” “Take good care of him. Lucas isn’t the type to show his feelings, but he needs someone like you by his side.” I instinctively looked toward the door. Lucas had already left the room and probably hadn’t heard what his grandfather had just told me. “I will,” I replied softly. I left the room as well and joined him in the hallway. He was already walking a few meters ahead of me without even turning around. I quickened my pace slightly to catch up with him.Chapter ElevenWhen I met him, everything about his face showed that he was not at all happy with me.I greeted him, unable to meet his gaze.He broke the silence that filled the entire room.“What were you thinking when you accepted an interview without my permission?”I blinked as I realized that the news had already reached him.I hadn’t really thought about it. I simply wanted to make sure everything was in place before launching my business.“Well… they were the ones who called me for an interview, and you weren’t home… I decided to accept their invitation.”He shook his head.“Do you ever think? Do you know the kind of damage you could have caused if you had said something you weren’t supposed to say?”I cleared my throat, feeling a little proud of myself.“I didn’t say anything inappropriate… I was really very careful.”He didn’t seem convinced.“The problem with you is that you don’t listen.”I was beginning to get tired of this argument, and besides, it was only a simple inte
Chapter TenAs soon as Lucas left, I grabbed my phone and started scrolling through my social media. I let out a cry of surprise when I saw the messages. Most of them were congratulating me on managing to land a billionaire.Lucas Bernard, the most sought-after bachelor in the city. Some were even asking for an interview with me. I decided to seize this opportunity since I was going to launch my business soon, in order to attract clients.I replied by text to accept the interview.I continued scrolling when I saw David and Ophelia having a great time in Dubai. She was with a baby. I zoomed in to see the resemblance to David.Tears welled up in my eyes. That could have been us if only he hadn't chosen her over me.While I was here, stuck with a man who wanted nothing to do with me. A fucking marriage of convenience! He was having a great time with my best friend.I wondered how Ophelia could have betrayed me like that.I put down the phone and went into the bathroom. If I wasted time l
Chapter NineThere was no way I was going to let him touch me; he was someone I barely knew.Without thinking too much, I took a seat on the other side of the bed.I didn't blame him at all. It was David, my ex, who had led me to agree to marry a man I had barely met at the courthouse. If he had shown up that day, I wouldn't have found myself in Lucas's mansion.I was still lost in my thoughts, thinking about everything that had happened recently, when sleep finally took over.My biological clock never failed me, and at exactly five in the morning, my eyes opened wide, ready to face the day.Lucas was already awake and had gone to the bathroom to take a shower.I had taken annual leave from work because of my wedding, so I didn't have to return right away, but now I couldn't afford to stay here doing nothing.I sat on the bed, waiting for Lucas to come out of the bathroom. He came out and entered the dressing room to change.I couldn't help myself; my eyes wandered over his well-built
Chapter Eight I focused my attention on something else, trying with all my might not to think about Lucas, even though his image invaded my mind. His attitude didn’t seem like something I could tolerate in the long run.Suggesting that we be friends was a decision I knew was necessary if I wanted to survive there.Avoiding the problem wouldn’t have solved anything. At least, it allowed me to keep my mind at ease.I went to my wardrobe in search of the perfect dress to wear. I chose one that I had bought during one of my shopping trips and tried it on.I was still admiring myself in front of the mirror when he entered. He didn’t say a word. He simply stared at me, which made me even more nervous.I slightly turned my gaze toward him, waiting for his opinion on the dress I was wearing. He made no comment.“Let’s go,” he simply said.I shrugged, irritated by his tone and attitude after everything we had said earlier. He didn’t seem interested at all.Undoubtedly… I was completely delusi
Chapter SevenI quickened my pace and settled beside him in the car. The driver wasted no time and immediately started the engine before driving away. The car was strangely silent, although that no longer seemed strange to me. Lucas rarely spoke. My mind went back to what Grandpa had said earlier. Grandchildren.I let out an ironic laugh. That wasn’t going to happen. How the hell were we supposed to give him grandchildren when we weren’t romantically involved? The driver stopped when we arrived at the mansion.I got out and went to my room. The day had already been long and depressing, because of Lucas.I rolled my eyes in disbelief as I remembered how ungrateful he had been toward my thoughtful gestures. He entered the room and took off his tie. He began to speak.“I want you to ignore what you heard from my grandfather about the grandchildren… you know that isn’t going to happen,” he murmured.“You should be aware of the terms of our marriage—first of all, I’m not looking for a roma
