Chapter 1

Daisy's POV

I felt my heart break the moment the luxury watch was thrown to the ground. It cost 10,000 dollars, and the receipt was still in my pocket. I had saved three months of my salary to surprise Zachary Guest, my boyfriend, for his birthday.

It lay in pieces on the floor, reduced to worthless scrap metal. I looked at its shattered face and found the whole thing bitterly ironic.

Zachary looked hesitant for a second. He wanted to say something to comfort me, but Wendy Little, his childhood friend, pulled him back, looking completely self-righteous.

"You can't fall for it! Daisy is just putting on a show! If you accept that watch today, she'll definitely hit you up for money later, Zachary!

"I've seen this trick plenty of times! I smashed the watch to teach her a lesson and stop her from always trying to depend on you, Zachary!"

Wendy made her case with absolute conviction, standing tall as she put on the display of an empowered woman. Zachary turned to look at her, unable to hide the sheer admiration filling his eyes.

I merely found the whole thing ridiculous. I stooped to pick up the broken watch, slipped it into my pocket, and headed out without a word.

Zachary chased after me and caught my wrist. "Are you actually upset about the whole thing, Daisy?"

He softened his voice and tried to calm me down. "Wendy might have gone a bit too far today, but she wasn't completely wrong. You need to grow up and learn to be independent. I'll pay you back for the watch, so quit sulking and come back to celebrate my birthday with me, Daisy."

I stopped in my tracks and turned to look at him, realizing that the face I had once fallen for at first sight now seemed bland and unappealing.

"Come on, Daisy! Wendy will get impatient if we take too long!" Zachary urged me when I stayed quiet for a long time, impatience flickering in his eyes.

I took a deep breath and carefully pulled my wrist free. "I'm not going back. I think we should just break up, Zachary…"

Zachary's expression instantly hardened after hearing that. "It's my birthday today. Do you really have to do this now, of all days, Daisy?"

I shook my head and said earnestly, "I'm not throwing a tantrum here. I'm being serious, Zachary."

I had considered breaking up for a long time, but I never found the resolve to end three years of our relationship.

Zachary and I did meet on a blind date, but my feelings for him were real.

I was always the kind of person to pour everything into a relationship. I never believed that loving someone sincerely meant I was lowering myself.

We officially started dating a month after we met. We got along well over the past three years, and our relationship grew stronger over time.

We had even planned to meet each other's families and start making wedding plans, but then Wendy suddenly returned from abroad.

She kept seeking out Zachary, inviting him to dinner and bringing up their past together. She was always talking about how women should be independent and free, while making it clear that she looked down on me.

I advised Zachary to cut down on smoking and drinking for his health, and Wendy called me narrow-minded.

I took care of all the chores to ease his work stress, and Wendy said I lacked independence. I urged him to stop impulse buying and save up for our future, and Wendy accused me of trying to control his finances before marriage.

Zachary eventually began to see my genuine care as nothing but an attempt to get something from him.

If he no longer trusted my sincerity, then there was simply no point in dragging the relationship out any longer.

Seeing how serious I was, Zachary panicked for a split second. He was just about to say something when Wendy's call came through.

"Is Daisy threatening you with a breakup, Zachary? You can't just buy into it! She's obviously bluster and nothing else! You'll be the one getting played if you take her seriously!

"If she really wanted to break up with you, she would've done it long ago! Do you think she'd stay with you for three years if she really meant it, Zachary?"

Zachary's furrowed brow instantly relaxed after hearing what Wendy said. "You should head home and reflect on yourself. Quit threatening to break up with me every time—it's getting really annoying, Daisy."

He said indifferently before turning on his heel and walking away without looking back.

I silently walked in the opposite direction, took out my phone, and called Mom. "You said before that you could set me up with someone back home, right? I'll do it, Mom."

Helena looked deeply apologetic. "I'm so sorry, Daisy. I swear I didn't tell him you were getting married. Zachary found the invitation you sent me and followed me here on the sly. I really couldn't stop him. "I've already called his parents, but if it bothers you, I'll take him away right now, Daisy.""It's alright, Helena," I said with a smile, shaking my head and looking completely unbothered. "It's all behind me now, so anyone who showed up to celebrate with me today is a welcome guest."That applied to my ex as well. Zachary was nothing more than just a stranger I used to know well.I hadn't seen Zachary in a year, and he looked like a completely different person. He had lost his former high spirits, leaving him looking thoroughly drained and defeated. When he saw me in my exquisite wedding dress, Zachary's eyes instantly welled up, his face a picture of despair. "Daisy—"I politely cut him off, saying, "Please don't address me in such an intimate manner. Harry won't be h

She forced a stiff smile, trying to brush off what she had just said. "W-What brings you here, Zachary? I was just joking around with my friends—"Before she could finish her excuses, Zachary grabbed her by the neck, the veins on his arm bulging from the sheer force he used.Wendy's friends screamed in horror.Zachary ignored them, his mind replaying what Wendy had just said. "You're saying the pills you gave me for Daisy weren't allergy medication? They were just vitamin C? How dare you, Wendy!"He tightened his grip, leaving Wendy unable to make a sound except for raspy, breathy gasps.Hearing the commotion inside the private room, the people outside rushed in, worried things would turn fatal. It took three or four men to wrestle Zachar

"W-Wendy?" Zachary pushed Wendy away forcefully, looking completely flustered. "W-What are you doing here? Where's Daisy?"Wendy was still asleep when Zachary pushed her off the bed. She crashed to the floor and woke with a jolt of pain. She was about to curse him out, but her fury faded as soon as she looked at him. She gazed at him shyly and asked, "What are you talking about? I'm the one who stayed with you last night, Zachary…"Zachary glared at her, furious. "You weren't the one I was supposed to meet last night! Where is Daisy? You promised you'd bring her here. How the hell did I end up with you, Wendy?"Wendy looked irritated for a second before she suppressed it and adopted an aggrieved expression. "I-I couldn't get hold of Daisy at her workplace last night… I didn't want to leave you hanging, so I went to the restaurant instead."I was going to explain everything when we got somewhere private… but you were so drunk that you thought I was Daisy, and then we…"She traile

"You'd do that for me?" Zachary asked, pleasantly surprised."Of course! I'll even keep everything under wraps. I'll make sure Daisy gets an unforgettable proposal!" Wendy exclaimed."Awesome! I'll head over to the restaurant now to set things up. You can pick Daisy up and bring her over later!" Zachary ended the call and excitedly grabbed his car keys, heading to the fine-dining restaurant.Meanwhile, Wendy's expression hardened, her eyes burning with jealousy and rage. She kept muttering under her breath, a malicious scheme taking shape in her mind. "Zachary is mine! I'll never let you have him, Daisy!"…At 8:00 pm, Zachary was standing on the second-floor balcony in his suit, waiting for Daisy. He kept adjusting his tie, his eyes drifting to the entrance again and again. He had never been rattled while handling multi-million-dollar deals, but now his palms were clammy with nerves.Just then, a figure appeared at the entrance.Zachary looked over right away and spotted

It was a little after 5:00 pm, and Zachary was getting ready to head over to Daisy's company to pick her up from work when his phone suddenly rang.Wendy called, her tone bright and cheerful. "I'll treat you to dinner tonight since you looked after me all night yesterday! I just came across this super hyped restaurant that's supposed to be amazing, Zachary!""I'll have to pass, so go on without me, Wendy. I'm spending time with Daisy tonight," Zachary said, instinctively refusing Wendy's invitation.Just as he was about to hang up, Wendy voiced her annoyance. "You're actually running off to Daisy again? Why is she so annoying and clingy? Didn't yesterday's stunt with the ground sesame seeds teach her anything at all?""You're not allowed to say that about Daisy! She's my girlfriend, Wendy!" Zachary's brow furrowed, his tone laced with displeasure.Wendy was momentarily stunned. She started yelling from the other end, her voice turning shrill. "How dare you snap at me because of

"Daisy!" Zachary pushed his way through the crowd like a madman and sprinted up the stairs. He stumbled more than once, nearly tumbling down.He finally unlocked the front door and rushed inside, only to find the apartment completely empty. He noticed that the dishes he had cooked last night were still on the dining table, giving off an unpleasant odor.He quickly pulled out his phone and tried calling Daisy, but it kept going straight to voicemail. He messaged her on WhatsApp, but it stayed stuck on a single gray check mark. That actually put his mind at ease. He figured that if Daisy could still block him on WhatsApp, then she had to be alright. He then mused that the young woman who had gone into anaphylactic shock after suffering a severe allergic reaction and had been taken away in the ambulance couldn't possibly be Daisy. He thought Daisy was likely at work at the moment.Zachary sighed in frustration at that thought. He slumped onto the couch and lit a cigarette, only to
