Chapter 2

Auteur: Dark Caramel
Mom instantly sensed that something was off. "Didn't you say before that you were seeing someone and didn't want to come back home for a blind date, Daisy?"

I replied flatly, "I'm not seeing anyone anymore."

Mom remained silent for a moment before asking, "Did that man wrong you, Daisy?"

Mom's question immediately brought tears to my eyes.

Did I feel wronged? Of course I did. I had given Zachary three years of sincere devotion, only for him to misinterpret everything I did because of Wendy's casual remarks.

I couldn't help but feel a pang in my chest whenever I remembered Zachary saying he felt stifled and telling me to learn to be independent like Wendy.

I didn't want Mom to worry, so I pretended to sound cheerful, even though tears pricked at my eyes. "It's nothing like that. It's because we weren't right for each other. I also didn't want to drag this out anymore, Mom."

"It's not that big of a deal—what's done is done. You should just come back home since you're broken up. You see, the guy I'm setting you up with is really good-looking—totally your type, Daisy," Mom said with a smile, not pressing me for details.

I hummed softly in agreement, feeling a little warmth return to my heart after talking to Mom.

I hung up and stared out the car window at the bustling, brightly lit streets. It was only a half-hour drive home, but it felt like an eternity.

I suddenly remembered the scene when I first met Zachary. He wore a plain white shirt and sipped his coffee.

He was easily the most eye-catching person in the cafe back then.

I remembered the day we officially started dating, when he bought a bouquet of red roses and handed them to me with a smile, saying it was a day worth celebrating. I remembered the first time we held hands, our first hug, our first kiss, and many more.

Every single memory of us together had felt so sweet back then.

Just then, my phone buzzed with a WhatsApp notification—Wendy had sent me a video. Zachary was drinking heavily in the video, looking utterly miserable. "I'm not eager to tie the knot this fast either, but Daisy and I have three years behind us. I have to do right by her."

Wendy pressed on, asking, "Do you actually love Daisy, then?"

I held my breath, still foolishly clinging to a shred of hope.

Zachary went quiet for a beat, then tipped his head back for another drink. "I wouldn't say I love her that much, but she's the most suitable person to settle down with."

Wendy let out a derisive laugh, her tone dripping with disdain.

I broke down in tears as the video went black. I felt a massive pang in my chest, the ache so intense it took my breath away. It turned out that to Zachary, I didn't even merit a confession of affection.

I was just a convenient choice to settle down with.

How utterly ridiculous.

I began packing my belongings once I returned to the apartment. Zachary invited me to move in with him two years ago when my lease was up, saying it would save on rent and help build our relationship. I eventually agreed to his invitation.

I had treated this place as our home and dedicated myself to taking care of it, yet here I was, leaving in disgrace.

Once I finished packing, I noticed that more than half the apartment was empty. I arranged to ship the larger items back to my hometown, while I packed the things that reminded me of my relationship with Zachary into boxes and left them at the dumpster corral.

Zachary called around 11:00 pm. I could hear loud chatter and music in the background, making it obvious that he was in a bar.

"It's my birthday today, so I'm out with a few friends of mine. I won't be coming back tonight, Daisy."

I instinctively wanted to dissuade him, but I stopped myself before I could say anything. Zachary and I had already broken up, so where he went or when he came home had nothing to do with me anymore.

I said indifferently, "Suit yourself."

Zachary sighed helplessly. "You're still upset about what happened, huh? I'll return home early tomorrow morning and pick up your favorite ravioli, Daisy."

I was about to tell him it wasn't necessary, but someone yanked the phone away from him. "How much longer are you going to keep this up? Please stop walking all over Zachary just because he's easygoing, Daisy!

"You know very well that women should stand on their own two feet. You're being utterly pathetic by constantly hovering over a man and trying to keep him on a short leash, Daisy!"

She abruptly hung up on me after saying that.

I held my phone tightly, my heart growing colder. Wendy was right—it was utterly pathetic of me to keep centering my life around a man who didn't really love me.

Helena looked deeply apologetic. "I'm so sorry, Daisy. I swear I didn't tell him you were getting married. Zachary found the invitation you sent me and followed me here on the sly. I really couldn't stop him. "I've already called his parents, but if it bothers you, I'll take him away right now, Daisy.""It's alright, Helena," I said with a smile, shaking my head and looking completely unbothered. "It's all behind me now, so anyone who showed up to celebrate with me today is a welcome guest."That applied to my ex as well. Zachary was nothing more than just a stranger I used to know well.I hadn't seen Zachary in a year, and he looked like a completely different person. He had lost his former high spirits, leaving him looking thoroughly drained and defeated. When he saw me in my exquisite wedding dress, Zachary's eyes instantly welled up, his face a picture of despair. "Daisy—"I politely cut him off, saying, "Please don't address me in such an intimate manner. Harry won't be h

Zachary violently kicked open the private room door and strode toward Wendy, his eyes completely bloodshot while his entire body radiated a terrifying chill.A brief panic flickered across Wendy's eyes, though she masked it almost immediately. She forced a stiff smile, trying to brush off what she had just said. "W-What brings you here, Zachary? I was just joking around with my friends—"Before she could finish her excuses, Zachary grabbed her by the neck, the veins on his arm bulging from the sheer force he used.Wendy's friends screamed in horror.Zachary ignored them, his mind replaying what Wendy had just said. "You're saying the pills you gave me for Daisy weren't allergy medication? They were just vitamin C? How dare you, Wendy!"He tightened his grip, leaving Wendy unable to make a sound except for raspy, breathy gasps.Hearing the commotion inside the private room, the people outside rushed in, worried things would turn fatal. It took three or four men to wrestle Zachar

"W-Wendy?" Zachary pushed Wendy away forcefully, looking completely flustered. "W-What are you doing here? Where's Daisy?"Wendy was still asleep when Zachary pushed her off the bed. She crashed to the floor and woke with a jolt of pain. She was about to curse him out, but her fury faded as soon as she looked at him. She gazed at him shyly and asked, "What are you talking about? I'm the one who stayed with you last night, Zachary…"Zachary glared at her, furious. "You weren't the one I was supposed to meet last night! Where is Daisy? You promised you'd bring her here. How the hell did I end up with you, Wendy?"Wendy looked irritated for a second before she suppressed it and adopted an aggrieved expression. "I-I couldn't get hold of Daisy at her workplace last night… I didn't want to leave you hanging, so I went to the restaurant instead."I was going to explain everything when we got somewhere private… but you were so drunk that you thought I was Daisy, and then we…"She traile

"You'd do that for me?" Zachary asked, pleasantly surprised."Of course! I'll even keep everything under wraps. I'll make sure Daisy gets an unforgettable proposal!" Wendy exclaimed."Awesome! I'll head over to the restaurant now to set things up. You can pick Daisy up and bring her over later!" Zachary ended the call and excitedly grabbed his car keys, heading to the fine-dining restaurant.Meanwhile, Wendy's expression hardened, her eyes burning with jealousy and rage. She kept muttering under her breath, a malicious scheme taking shape in her mind. "Zachary is mine! I'll never let you have him, Daisy!"…At 8:00 pm, Zachary was standing on the second-floor balcony in his suit, waiting for Daisy. He kept adjusting his tie, his eyes drifting to the entrance again and again. He had never been rattled while handling multi-million-dollar deals, but now his palms were clammy with nerves.Just then, a figure appeared at the entrance.Zachary looked over right away and spotted

It was a little after 5:00 pm, and Zachary was getting ready to head over to Daisy's company to pick her up from work when his phone suddenly rang.Wendy called, her tone bright and cheerful. "I'll treat you to dinner tonight since you looked after me all night yesterday! I just came across this super hyped restaurant that's supposed to be amazing, Zachary!""I'll have to pass, so go on without me, Wendy. I'm spending time with Daisy tonight," Zachary said, instinctively refusing Wendy's invitation.Just as he was about to hang up, Wendy voiced her annoyance. "You're actually running off to Daisy again? Why is she so annoying and clingy? Didn't yesterday's stunt with the ground sesame seeds teach her anything at all?""You're not allowed to say that about Daisy! She's my girlfriend, Wendy!" Zachary's brow furrowed, his tone laced with displeasure.Wendy was momentarily stunned. She started yelling from the other end, her voice turning shrill. "How dare you snap at me because of

"Daisy!" Zachary pushed his way through the crowd like a madman and sprinted up the stairs. He stumbled more than once, nearly tumbling down.He finally unlocked the front door and rushed inside, only to find the apartment completely empty. He noticed that the dishes he had cooked last night were still on the dining table, giving off an unpleasant odor.He quickly pulled out his phone and tried calling Daisy, but it kept going straight to voicemail. He messaged her on WhatsApp, but it stayed stuck on a single gray check mark. That actually put his mind at ease. He figured that if Daisy could still block him on WhatsApp, then she had to be alright. He then mused that the young woman who had gone into anaphylactic shock after suffering a severe allergic reaction and had been taken away in the ambulance couldn't possibly be Daisy. He thought Daisy was likely at work at the moment.Zachary sighed in frustration at that thought. He slumped onto the couch and lit a cigarette, only to
