Chapter 4

Author: Wild Wheat
Third-Person Point of View

Alexia wasn't seriously hurt. There was just a small cut on her leg, but it still had all three men on edge.

When she heard that Sean had locked Ophelia up, a sly little smile curved her lips. She clung to Wesley's arm, playfully fluttering her lashes.

"I'm fine. I can still go on the trip with Marcus tomorrow, right? You promised me, Dad."

Unable to resist her, Wesley gave in with a fond sigh.

Seeing him relent, Alexia pressed on. "I still haven't finished packing. Since everyone's here, you can help me decide which clothes and jewelry I should take with me."

The maid laid out Alexia's clothes and accessories one by one. She picked up a diamond necklace, then a pair of pearl earrings.

"Sean gave me this for my birthday. I have to take it.

"And this was picked out by Dad… I have to take it too."

Five or six suitcases sat open in front of her, and she looked determined not to leave until they were filled to the brim.

Marcus' patience wore thin, and he frowned. "Lexi, you don't need all these diamonds, pearls, and fancy dresses for a trip. All of this will only weigh you down."

Alexia blinked, puzzled. "But all these things are important to me! I want to take amazing photos that will make everyone envious. I can't leave anything behind."

Wesley yawned and finally said, "Marcus is right. Just take what you like and leave the rest. They aren't going anywhere."

Sean nodded in agreement. "Listen to him, Lexi. When you get back, I'll get you new bags and jewelry."

Alexia's smile faltered. "I said I wanted to take a bodyguard, but you said no. Now you're saying I can't even take the things I love? What's the point of traveling at all, then?"

Marcus' brow furrowed. "So you can't go on a trip without jewelry? Ophelia loved traveling the most, and yet she'd just grab a bag and go all the time. She never made things this complicated."

The room fell quiet. They'd never gotten Ophelia designer bags or jewelry before.

Alexia's eyes widened. "Marcus, are you calling me difficult?"

Marcus hesitated, then turned to Sean. "Has Ophie come back yet?"

Sean had locked Ophelia in the restaurant after Marcus had left.

"I locked her in the restaurant to teach her a lesson," Sean said, checking the time. "They'll let her out in a couple of hours, and she'll come home on her own."

Marcus' eyes flicked to the seafood soup the maid had brought over. Suddenly, he remembered something. "Did you leave any allergy medicine for Ophie? She's allergic to seafood."

Sean froze. "I… I was rushing Lexi to the hospital. I forgot about that…"

Wesley stood up. "Go get her now. She'll be fine."

Seeing everyone's attention shift away from her, Alexia finally lost it.

"What are you talking about? Ophelia and I are twins! I'm not allergic to seafood, so how could she be? She's obviously faking it to get your attention!"

Marcus immediately instructed the maid to prepare Ophelia's allergy medicine. "Lexi, keep packing. I'll check on Ophelia first and come back to help you finish."

Alexia shrieked, "Dad! Sean! Look at what Marcus is doing!"

Sean's face darkened. "Lexi, we're just making sure Ophie's safe. You've had enough attention for now. The trip to the restaurant won't take more than an hour. Stop being so unreasonable."

Wesley nodded in agreement.

Alexia grabbed Sean's arm, refusing to let go. "You're all lying! You said I was the most important to you, and now no one cares about me! Why? Because of that brat? Even if she's allergic, she's not dead. She can take care of herself!"

As she grew more panicked, the sweet, gentle facade she'd carefully crafted slipped.

Marcus froze. "Lexi, Ophie is your sister and my girlfriend. Not some brat!"

Without another word, the three men got in the car and sped off toward the restaurant.

After Alexia's hysterics, the atmosphere in the car was tense and uncomfortable.

Sean muttered suddenly, "Ophie's hardly ever sick. Maybe Lexi's right. She's not really allergic. She just wants us to feel guilty."

He lowered his voice, muttering to himself, "If she's okay this time, I'll get her a birthday gift as well."

Wesley leaned back in his seat, nodding slightly. Meanwhile, Marcus stayed silent as he sped through the roads.

When they reached the restaurant, a small crowd had gathered and were talking among themselves.

One sharp-eyed server recognized Sean and hurried over, handing him a crumpled piece of paper.

"Mr. Cavanaugh, this woman with late-stage cancer is your family, right? She… passed away earlier this morning."

Sean read the title out loud, "Severance Agreement? Ophie, you still haven't forgiven us…""Why should I forgive you?" My gaze swept over their faces, cold and unflinching. "What right do you have to ask for forgiveness? When you beat me up, locked me away, and nearly got me killed, did any of you ever think about forgiveness? Whether you sign it or not, you're dead to me either way. "And if you ever try to harass me again, I swear I'll do everything in my power to make sure neither the Cavanaughs nor the Shaws ever have another peaceful day."Given my current identity and status, I could make it happen.I'd already died once. Naturally, I hadn't returned to this house unprepared. The Cavanaughs and the Shaws were already in dire financial straits. Alexia had singlehandedly managed to tear both families apart.Three years was more than enough to grind away what little affection and patience they had left, until everything collapsed.I'd returned to add fuel to the fire. At the Cavanaugh residence, Wesley's hair had turned almost completely white, and his back was hunched as if years of stress had aged him overnight.Sean, once strong and broad-shouldered, now looked gaunt, his eyes sunken as if he hadn't slept in years.Even Marcus was there, for reasons I couldn’t immediately understand. The three of them froze when they saw me. They took a step back, rubbing their eyes in shock.Marcus was the first to react. He stepped forward, grabbed my hand, and choked up when he saw the unique birthmark on my wrist."Ophie… it really is you! You're alive! I knew you wouldn't leave me like that! Where have you been all these years? I've missed you so much…"Sean stepped forward, his eyes brimming with tears. "Ophie, it's so good to have you back. We've been thinking about you nonstop for the past three years. Why didn't you come home? Do you know how many tears we've shed for you? Dad even ended up in the hospital for two weeks because of you!"Wesley sta

Three years later, at Levaine National Opera House, when the judges announced Ophelia Cavanaugh as the gold medalist, Jacqueline and I hugged each other, tears streaming down our faces.Only I truly understood the pain and struggle I'd endured the past three years. When I first went abroad, even though Jacqueline had arranged the best doctors for me, battling cancer was far from easy.I wanted to get back on stage as fast as possible, so I threw myself into treatment, even experimenting with cutting-edge anti-cancer drugs. The side effects hit me hard. I gained weight, lost a lot of hair, and couldn't eat. At my worst, I lay in bed for nearly ten days with tubes hooked up everywhere. All of us thought I wouldn't make it.Yet I woke up.From that moment, my health improved day by day, until I finally stepped back into the dance studio.I still couldn't believe it.The doctor's words echoed in my mind. Ophelia's First-Person Point of ViewI only learned about the chaos in my family afterward.Because I wasn't dead.I'd been saved by Jacqueline Schmidt, the restaurant owner's daughter. She found me clinging to life by a thread and rushed me to the hospital. She even handled the cemetery arrangements to mislead my family.I spent a full seven days in the hospital before my condition stabilized."Ms. Cavanaugh, your condition is extremely rare. If you actively undergo treatment, there's a slim chance of recovery…"The doctor's voice carried a hint of excitement. I cut him off. "Thank you, doctor. That won't be necessary."I'd always been unlucky. A slim chance of recovery? For me, that might as well have been zero.I had no friends. My family and the people I once loved despised and abandoned me.The favoritism, the betrayal, the suffocating pain—those wounds were impossible to erase. They would stay with me forever.I had no attachment to this world. I'd already lived more th

Marcus said in a hoarse voice, "I don't believe it! I never even got to see Ophie in a wedding dress. She loved me so much. How could she just leave me like this?"He grabbed Sean by the collar, his eyes blazing. "Why did you lock her up in the restaurant all night? Did you even know she was sick? Ophelia was your sister!"All the regret and agony Sean had been suppressing surged forth, and he threw a hard punch squarely at Marcus' face. "And what right do you have to blame me? She called you yesterday. I heard her mention the hospital. You didn't even ask a single question! You know better than anyone how much Ophelia loved you! You were her boyfriend, and you still failed her. If anything, I should be coming after you!"The two men, once refined and composed, got into a full-blown brawl, completely losing all shred of dignity.Alexia's earlier delight vanished in an instant. Their attention was supposed to be on her. Why were they fighting like this over the death of that jinx?

Sean staggered in shock before he grabbed the server by the collar, his voice sharp. "What did you say? Say it again!"Marcus snatched the medical report. He was rendered speechless as he stared at the name on it in shock. The server trembled. "The woman with late-stage cancer was trapped in the restaurant last night. She was already sick and was also having an allergic reaction. She passed away this morning. It looked like she suffered…"Wesley clutched his chest, coughing violently."Ophelia? Impossible! She's tough! She was born under impossible circumstances and still made it. How could she be gone now?"Marcus couldn't take it anymore and stormed into the restaurant. Sean followed right behind him. They tore through every corner, questioning every server about Ophelia, only to hear the same chilling answer.Wesley's panic intensified, and he grabbed Sean's arm. "Sean, is it true? Is Ophie really dead? She was arguing with us just yesterday. How… how could she be gone? She's
