The cold night air bit at my skin as I stared at Gift in her car.

Her eyes were sharp, irritated, burning with a challenge she didn’t dare voice. I should have shouted at her for following me, should have dragged answers out of her, but all I could see was the way her chest rose and fell, the tremor in her fingers, the stubborn lift of her chin.
