THE TRUTH ABOUT IAN

EVE

Agatha had shown me how to use the pregnancy test strip, then stepped outside the bathroom to give me privacy.

The test strip felt like it weighed a hundred pounds in my hand. My fingers wouldn’t stop trembling.

“Eve? You okay in there?” she called.

“Yeah,” I lied.

I did the test and finally forced myself to look.

Two lines. Positive.

For a moment, the world tilted. My stomach knotted, and my ears started ringing. I had lost my virginity to my brother’s friend, a man six years older than me and now I was pregnant with his child.

Keeping the pregnancy was never an option, I didn’t even want to think about what my parents would do to me, they were out of the country for now, but if they found out, I’m pretty sure they’ll be on the next flight home, and they wouldn’t come with comfort, they’d come with punishment

When I didn’t answer for a while, Agatha pushed open the bathroom door. One glance at my face told her everything. We didn’t speak. She just took the strip from my hand and tossed it, making sure no one would ever find it.

I was so sure I looked like hell, it didn’t matter because I was going to be in hell literally if I didn’t do something about this, I thought looking down at my flat tummy.

I took Agatha’s phone and went back to the bathroom dialing Ian’s line.

He picked on the first ring.

“Hi,” I managed to say. “Are you busy right now?”

“Not for you baby,” he said casually. “What’s up?”

“Fine,” I lied again, hoping stupidly that he’d hear something in my voice and ask how I was.

“You checked that stuff?” he finally asked.

“Hmm…”

“I’ll assume it’s positive,” he said, in a low voice, like he didn’t want someone nearby to hear.

I heard a woman laughing in the background and suddenly felt my chest tightened. “Are you with someone?” I asked. “Yeah some friends, but it’s cool we can talk.” He said and I heard a click then the faint sound of him exhaling smoke.

“You’ve not done this before right?” He asked and I imagined him exhaling smoke from his mouth with his eyes narrowed as he spoke. “No.” I told him.

“You have to take care of it tomorrow, I’ll send you some money.”

I have to take care of it. Not we.

It stung more than I wanted to admit.

I hated myself for being so dumb.

“Yeah, sure.” I replied, trying to sound nonchalant and unbothered.

He sent the money like he said and an address for me to go to, he claimed that he couldn’t come because he had work to do outside town.

On the day I was supposed to go for my appointment I called Ian, he didn’t pick up but called back after an hour later. I

“Hey, was busy. Done it yet?” He asked.

“No,” I said and I heard his painful intake of breath.

“Can’t you come?” I asked even though I knew what his response was going to be.

“I’m going out of town for work,” he said. “Yeah…”

“Baby, you sure you want this? Paris is usually very hot this time of the year.” Came a woman’s voice. I didn’t want to believe what I heard, Ian told me he was going on a work trip but turns out he was going to Paris with a woman. Could she be the woman Agatha mentioned. Before I could ask any questions, Ian hung up.

Paris.

Not work.

A trip.

With her.

Another woman.

I fell on couch thinking to myself, I already knew how this was going to end but why was I so hurt and refusing to let go.

Could it be the virginity myth, should I go ahead and give Ian what he wants? He must have done this a lot with other girls, seeing as he already booked an appointment, and gave me the exact amount it would cost.

No extra money to get lunch or transport, it was clear he never loved me but I found it difficult to accept.

The truth was simpler, and crueler

I still wanted him. Even after this.

And that was the part I hated most.

Hours passed in a blur. The anger settled in my chest like a slow-burning coal. Ian thought he could use me, discard me, and still walk away untouched.

Few hours later, I picked up Agatha’s phone and dialed Ian’s number.

“It’s done.” I told him.

“Good,” he said without hesitation. “That’s one less thing to worry about.”

One less thing to worry about.

I bit back a laugh that wasn’t amusement at all.

He never mentioned what I over heard or even tried to explain.

Agatha sat across from me, eyes searching my face. “Eve… please tell me you didn’t—”

“I’m keeping it,” I said quietly.

Her brows knitted. “Eve, this is—”

“A mistake? Maybe.” I met her gaze, my tone like ice. “But it’s my mistake to make.”

Ian thought I’d erase this and pretend it never happened. He thought he could hide behind Paris and another woman’s laugh. He was wrong.

Even if it destroyed me, even if I regretted it every day, I was going to keep this child.

And when the time came, Ian would know exactly what it meant to be played.

  • EVE’S APPLE   THE SUSPICION

Birthdays were supposed to be a fresh start, something to look forward to. But now, with the knot of unease growing in my chest, I couldn’t help wondering if mine was about to mark the beginning of something I wasn’t ready for.I sank onto the edge of my bed, my mind was racing. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe it was just because of everything that had happened. Noah, the fight, the sleepless nights. Stress could mess with your body, right? That had to be it. I was probably just overthinking things, the last time my period was late was two years ago and that was because I had hormonal imbalance which I treated, maybe it was back again. I decided to wait a few days, no need to make a big deal out of nothing. By the fourth day, my resolve began to crack. I sat at the table, staring at the scrambled eggs Agatha had made for breakfast, but I couldn’t bring myself to eat.She noticed.“You’ve been weird lately,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”I hesi

  • EVE’S APPLE   SILENCE

EVESleep never came, only the kind of restless half-dreams that kept dragging me back to the same memory. I kept twisting my legs around my sheets, my skin felt too hot, then too cold, and I hated that my chest still ached.I had always imagined giving myself to someone who loved me, someone older, sure, but gentle, patient, experienced… someone who would make it mean something. At some point I must have slept off due to exhaustion, because the next thing I knew, the knock on my room door woke me up and I realized that it was already morning, I didn’t see Noah through out yesterday, since everything that happened and Agatha had to leave because she had work to do. I managed to get up with my body aching all over. When I opened my room door, Noah stood there with his hands buried deep in his pockets, eyes fixed on the floor.“I shouldn’t have…” His jaw clenched. “I shouldn’t have lost my temper. But, Eve… you disappointed me. You really did.”I nodded, unable to meet his gaze, and h

  • EVE’S APPLE   THE UNRAVELING

“Hey Eve, could you come help me check something?” Noah called out.I was texting Ian before he called and I forgot to lock my phone screen as I walked to his room to answer him. “What is it?” I asked, stepping into his room, I sat beside him.Noah looked at my hand and back up at me serious. “You’re texting Ian.”It wasn’t a question.“Oh… uh…” I stammered, caught off guard. “It’s not a big deal. I was just replying to his story.”“Forget it,” he muttered. “I don’t need your help anymore.”He looked away, jaw tight with frustration. I left his room confused. Why was he angry? He doesn’t know anything does he?Later that afternoon, Agatha came by to drop off some drinks for Noah. I heard his voice from the kitchen.“Did you know Eve has been talking to Ian?”“No, not really,” Agatha answered. Just like I told her, deny everything if he ever asked. I didn’t want her to get involved, Noah already didn’t like her as my friend, I didn’t want to give him a reason to think she was a bad pe

  • EVE’S APPLE   STRINGS ATTACHED

EVE⸻“Do you mind coming over? I miss you.”That’s what Ian texted me.And like always, I said yes.I showered, got dressed, and a few hours later, I was at his place, curled up beside him, watching some random movie neither of us paid attention to.“Can I kiss you?” he asked. The question was strange. He didn’t asked the first time he kissed me. That rainy night when he leaned in and stole my first kiss. No permission, no warning. Just rain, silence, and the warmth of his mouth on mine. Now, he was asking.I nodded. He kissed me, and I kissed him back. It wasn’t new, but it felt… different. Like the beginning of something I couldn’t name. The first time he tried to have sex with me, I panicked and pulled away.I gave excuses, vague ones. He said it was okay, that he’d never force me. That I didn’t have to do anything I didn’t want to.That made me trust him more. It made me feel safe, made me think that everything I’ve ever heard about him was a lie.He kept texting me after that, t

  • EVE’S APPLE   CONNECTION

I didn’t text him immediately.I waited three days. On purpose, I didn’t want to seem desperate.“Hi,” I finally sent, watching the screen like it owed me something.A few seconds later, his reply came in:“Hello, who is this please?”I rolled my eyes.“Eve. The girl from Agatha’s bar.”“Oh! I’m so sorry, beautiful. How have you been?”And just like that, the conversation picked up. Effortless. Smooth. He was funny. Flirty. The kind of charming that made you feel special just through text. I found myself looking forward to his texts, rereading his compliments, smiling like a fool in the dark.A few days later, I went back to Agatha’s bar. Truthfully, I was hoping to see him.I told her everything, what he said, how he made me feel. She looked at me, serious for the first time all night. “I’ll just give you one piece of advice: avoid Ian.”I blinked. “Not that I’m interested in him… but why do you say that?”“I’ve known him since I started working here. I’ve overheard enough of his con
