Chapter 6

Zina POV

"Okay Mrs Williams, I think I know the problem." I said while taking off the gloves on my hands.

"Oh really, what's the problem?" She said while trying to sit up on the bed.

"Well ma'am, you have coccidioidomycosis, it's a common but fatal disease amongst werewolves."

I could see fear dancing around in her eyes and I don't know why I felt a little pang in my chest.

What the fuck was wrong with me? She treated me poorly. She made my life miserable, so why was I feeling pity for her?

I needed to get out of here.

"Oh, if I must ask, what are the symptoms? Could you please explain them to me."

"Of course, it is caused by the consumption or inhalation of contaminated soil. Dogs can also be infected through the skin, especially through a skin wound. Do you touch the ground often?" I asked with a look of indifference on my face.

I noticed her face light up and it made her look a bit approachable. It's not like anyone will approach anyway.

"Well yes, I have a garden. I grow the prettiest flowers and my vegetables always win the best veggies in the fair. You should come try them sometime."

I blinked down at her and to say I wasn't shocked is an understatement, this Is the longest she has ever talked to me.

Normally it was a kick, snarky comment and the dirtiest look she could muster. It's coming as quite a shock, she's talking to me nicely now.

"Ok," I started. "It seems like you have contaminated soil in your garden so that could explain you getting sick. I'm going to call up my team and we will start treatment straight away."

I leaned over to check her IV and I felt a wrinkly hand on my arm. I felt my blood boil and I was about to lash out on her but I needed to be a professional.

She may have been one of my worst nightmare, but I still need to maintain professionalism, even if it's with my stupid mother in law from hell.

I looked down at Mrs King and I slowly tried to release myself from her grip but she tightened her grip and I felt like screaming.

I looked down at her and I could see an unknown emotion in her eyes, "Mrs Williams, I'm trying to be a professional right now so I'm going to say this nicely. Let go of my arm so I can start your treatment."

She still looked up at me and smiled. She held her hand out and stroked my hair, "You look so beautiful now. I can also feel your aura, it's stronger now. It's almost like that of an alpha. You're a perfect Luna now, it's about time you came home so you're going back to our park to continue your duties."

For the second time today, I started laughing uncontrollably.

Who needs comedy when you have clowns like this.

After five minutes, I calmed down enough to finally answer her, "It seems like your condition is worse than I thought, it has eaten your brain and you have lost your mind. What made you think in your stupid head that I would come back to that park and be in the Luna."

"Because you love my son and you would do anything to get on his good books."

"You seriously believe that I want to be with your son. Ma'am we are definitely sick in the head, your son cheated on me with my best friend, he divorced me. So why should I come to a place that caused me a lot of pain?!" I exclaimed.

I was starting to get worked up but I honestly didn't care. She needs to calm the fuck down.

"What happened back then was quite unfortunate. Actually it was meant to happen because of the discriminating video that was discovered."

"I'm telling you that she wasn't me!" I bellowed.

Why doesn't anyone believe me? Yes she may have looked like me, but she wasn't me.

She coughed and more green ooze came from her system, I quickly rushed to her side and tried to give her some water. She dismissed me with a flick of her hand and I grew annoyed from her behavior.

She eventually calmed down and turned to  face again, "Anyway, you're coming back to the pack, Bella isn't exactly Luna material and she's an airhead. You're three times attractive than her and more valuable than her. You are a doctor and so you can help your pack."

"Well I'm sorry to burst your bubble but I'm not coming back to that pack. I'm going to stay here and live a normal and healthy life, away from toxicity and pain. Much like the one you and your son caused."

I was so done with this conversation, I just want to treat her and get out of here, she's not worth the energy and stress.

I felt a headache forming and I just had to ask her this before any other thing. "What exactly did I do to you? Why do you hate me this much? And why did you treat me badly? I was nothing but nice to you, I took you as a mother and I want you to like  me."

Mrs King's face morphed to anger and I couldn't help but feel bothered about her sudden change of mood."What did you do? What didn't you do? You publicly humiliated me in New York. In front of all those people, you shamed me and you expect me to forgive you?"

"What the fuck are you talking about lady?"

"Stop pretending you don't know!" Stop pretending that you don't remember. I remember that day as if it was yesterday. I was in New York for some meetings and I decided to get some coffee. The stupid barista used local coffee beans to make my latte and I went to teach him a lesson. I was scolding him for his stupid and poor work, when you came." She pointed at me.

I was getting more confused by the second.

"You pushed me and I fell down to the floor, hitting my spine in the process, that's why I have a hump on my back. Nobody helped me up, instead they were telling you thank you, saying how much they appreciated you for standing up to a Karen." she said, appalling. "Eight months after, Xaden introduced you to me as his fucking mate."

I blinked once and walked towards her. I lowered myself till I was face to face with her. She looked frightened and scared and I couldn't help feeling a little bit of satisfaction from that.

I leaned forward to her ear and from the corner of my eye, I saw her hold her breath.

Pathetic.

"Mrs King, I have never been to New York before." I whispered.

She looked at me like I have grown two heads, "that's impossible, I know what I saw. I saw you, I know I did, it's just that you had short blue hair. You embarras-"

"Blue hair? Really?" I looked up at the ceiling and I knew I was in for a long ride. "Mrs King, I grew up in the strictest park in North America. They don't even allow multiple piercings and certainly not dyeing of hair. So how was it you saw me with short blue hair and it magically grew to waist length in eight months?"

She looked like she just saw a ghost and I chucked at her expression.

"Let's get you all better."

So I can never see you again.

****

"She's going to need more vitamins and she's going to need a lot of bed rest. In a couple of days she should be ok." I tell Xaden.

He looks at me with a dreamy expression on his face and I couldn't help but feel like he's being annoying.

"Well that's everything, so excuse me, I have somewhere else to be."

I turned around to leave but he held my hand. I'm getting really tired of everyone holding my hand today.

"What do you want, Xaden?"

"Im so sorry about everything that hhappened Zina, Please come back home. I missed you, the pack missed you and besides we're still mates. So you're going home with-"

"I, Zina William, accept your rejection."

Xaden moved back two steps from the pain and I felt the last piece of our mate bond sever away.

"I have no business with you anymore Xaden, leave me alone and get out of my way. I hate you with everything in me, I wish to never see you again. Once again I hate you and I wish to all the best in life.

POV: ZinaThe kitchen felt quieter than it had moments ago, though the silence was far from comforting. My gaze lingered on the closed door, the echo of Trina's heels against the floor replaying in my mind like a haunting melody. I should have felt victorious—watching her crumble under the weight of my words should've been satisfying. But as I stood there, the adrenaline ebbed, replaced by a hollow exhaustion that pressed on my chest.I sank into the nearest chair, rubbing my temples. The fight had drained me more than I cared to admit. From the corner of my eye, I caught the tea kettle on the stove. The sight of it brought a sliver of comfort, so I busied myself making tea. As the water boiled, the steam curling upward, my thoughts wandered to a time long before Trina and her perfectly curated chaos.---Xaden's laughter echoed through the kitchen, rich and unrestrained. I had been trying to teach him how to make pancakes, and his clumsy attempts had resulted in batter smeared across

POV: ZinaThe knock at the door wasn't surprising; I'd been expecting a delivery. Asher's new schoolbooks had been delayed for days, and I had spent the morning waiting to sign for them. But when I opened the door, my stomach clenched.Standing there, dressed as though she'd stepped out of a fashion magazine, was Trina. And she hasn't changed a bit.For a moment, neither of us spoke. Her sharp cheekbones and meticulously styled hair glistened in the sunlight. Her lips were painted a bright red, her eyes hidden behind oversized sunglasses that she slowly removed, revealing a piercing stare."Zina." Her voice was sugary but laced with badly hidden spite.I leaned against the doorframe, crossing my arms. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the woman who thought stealing my husband was a promotion. I see you have removed the devil's thorns on your head."Her painted lips twitched into a tight smile. "I see you haven't changed.""Neither have you bitch," I shot back. "What do you want from me?"

  • Echoes Of A Shattered Heart   The confrontation

POV: JaredIt was a quiet morning in the office, the kind where everything felt routine. The hum of my computer filled the room as I worked through an endless string of emails. I liked mornings like this—structured, predictable. But the peace shattered in an instant. The door to my office slammed open so hard it hit the wall. I looked up, startled, as Xaden stormed in like a man on fire. His face was twisted with fury, his eyes sharp and blazing."Jared!" he snapped, his voice loud enough to carry through the entire floor. My assistant, Sarah, appeared behind him, looking flustered and apologetic. "I tried to stop him, Mr. Jared, but he—""It's fine," I interrupted, holding up a hand. "Close the door, Sarah. I'll handle this."She hesitated for a moment, clearly unsure if she should leave me alone with him. I gave her a reassuring nod, and she finally backed out, shutting the door softly behind her.Xaden wasted no time. He strode over to my desk, his movements stiff with anger. He pl

A Mother's Dilemma Zina POV The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, painting the kitchen with a soft glow. I had barely slept, my mind running circles around the storm Xaden had stirred up. His words from last night haunted me: the anger, the betrayal, and his unspoken promise to not back down.I placed two plates of scrambled eggs and toast on the table, the aroma filling the small kitchen. Asher shuffled in, rubbing his sleepy eyes and dragging his stuffed dinosaur behind him. His messy curls framed his face, and despite my inner turmoil, his presence brought a fragile sense of calm."Morning, Mom," he mumbled, climbing into his chair."Good morning, sweetheart," I replied, trying to sound cheerful. "Did you sleep well?""Uh-huh," he said, already diving into his breakfast. "I'm so hungry!"I chuckled softly, though the sound felt forced. Watching him eat reminded me of how much I had to lose. My appetite remained absent, but I sat across from him, sipping on a glass o

Zina's POVThe knock on the door was sharp and insistent, cutting through the quiet of the night. My chest tightened as I glanced at the clock. Midnight. No one came by this late, especially not unannounced. The heavy silence in the house suddenly felt suffocating.Hesitant, I moved toward the door, each step weighed down by an inexplicable sense of dread. When I opened it, my breath caught. Xaden stood there, his tall frame illuminated by the dim porch light. His face was a storm of fury, his eyes blazing with anger."What are you doing here?" I asked, gripping the door tightly to steady myself."You didn't think I'd find you, did you?" His voice was sharp, cutting through the air like a blade."I don't know what you're talking about," I said quickly, trying to shut the door, but he shoved it open and stepped inside."You don't get to shut me out, Zina," he growled, his voice rising. "Not this time."I glared at him, my heart pounding. "You can't just barge into my life like this. Yo

Zina POVThe water pours down relentlessly, the sound a soothing yet deafening roar around us. Each droplet feels like a whisper against my skin, but it does little to calm the storm raging within me. Jared's arms are wrapped securely around me, his chest rising and falling steadily as if he isn't as affected by this as I am. How could he be so calm when I feel like my world is on the verge of shattering?I press my forehead against his chest, trying to focus on his warmth. It's grounding, comforting even. I should feel safe here, and I do, but there's an undercurrent of fear—fear of what this moment means, fear of what I've just given him, fear of the unknown future."Zina," Jared's deep voice cuts through the quiet chaos in my head. He says my name softly, almost reverently, as if it's the most precious word he's ever spoken. "Look at me."I hesitate for a moment, reluctant to meet his gaze. When I finally tilt my head up, his dark eyes are waiting, filled with something I can't qui
