Capítulo 1

1.

The air inside The Velvet Crypt was thick with the scent of aged whiskey, expensive cigar smoke, and unadulterated greed.

I smoothed down the silk of my midnight-blue dress, my heart hammering against my ribs. I shouldn't have listened to my friend Sophia. I was Elena Roy—the quiet, dutiful daughter of the Roy real estate empire. I belonged in classical concert halls, not masked underground auctions where the wealthy elite bought things meant to stay hidden in the shadows.

"Relax, Elena," Sophia whispered, adjusting her lace mask next to me in the VIP balcony. "It's just an exclusive showcase. No one knows we're here."

I gripped the velvet railing, ready to leave, when the spotlight abruptly shifted to the main stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the auctioneer's smooth, sinister voice echoed through the room. "Tonight’s final item is a unique masterpiece. Once a rising star in the modeling world, now a broken bird with nowhere else to go. Starting bid: fifty thousand dollars."

The iron cage in the center of the stage rose.

Inside stood a man, bound in heavy chains. He wore no shirt, displaying a sculpted chest and lean physique, but it was his face that drew every pair of eyes in the hall. A jagged, pale scar swept across his left jawline, marring what was once flawless, aristocratic perfection. His chestnut-brown hair hung over his forehead, half-hiding eyes filled with dark, simmering humiliation.

His name was Damian Reed. I had seen his face on billboards across the city just a year ago, before his sudden, tragic car crash.

"Sixty thousand!" a woman in the front row called out with a cruel smirk.

"Eighty thousand!" another chimed in.

They weren't bidding on a human being; they were bidding on the chance to ruin what was left of a fallen idol. Damian’s jaw clenched, his muscles straining against the chains as the room filled with mocking laughter.

Looking at his scarred face and the quiet rage burning in his dark eyes, a sharp pang stabbed my chest. He wasn't just a fallen star—he looked like a trapped animal waiting to be slaughtered for someone else's entertainment.

"One hundred thousand!" someone shouted.

My fingers tightened on my velvet bidding paddle. I didn't care about the consequences. I couldn't let these wolves tear him apart.

Before my brain could stop my hands, I raised my paddle high into the dim light.

"Five hundred thousand dollars," I declared, my voice echoing clearly across the balcony.

The room fell dead silent. Whispers broke out like wildfire as head after head turned toward my quiet corner. Down on the stage, Damian’s head snapped up. Through the shadows, his sharp gaze locked onto mine—a girl with long platinum-blonde hair standing in the dim light of the upper box.

"Five hundred thousand... going once, twice..." The gavel cracked against the wood. "Sold to the lady in the upper balcony!"

An hour later, the heavy oak doors of my private estate clicked shut behind us.

The silence inside my spacious penthouse was deafening. I turned around, my heart fluttering nervously as Damian stepped past the foyer. Up close, without the stage lights, he was imposing. The scar on his jaw gave his handsome face a dangerous, unpredictable edge.

He looked around the marble floors, the crystal chandeliers, and finally brought his dark eyes back to me. The shame that had choked him in the cage seemed to evaporate, replaced by a calculating, intense glare.

"Five hundred thousand dollars," Damian spoke, his voice low and raspy as he slowly closed the distance between us. "A very generous price for a broken man, Miss Roy. What exactly do you expect me to do for that kind of money?"

I stepped back until my spine hit the cold glass wall overlooking the city skyline. "I... I don't expect anything from you, Damian. I just wanted to get you out of there."

A faint, bitter smirk touched his lips, though it never reached his eyes. "A rich, innocent heiress playing savior?" He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently catching a strand of my platinum-blonde hair, winding it around his finger. "Be careful, Elena. Innocent girls who buy dangerous toys usually end up getting hurt."

I couldn't look away from his dark eyes, completely unaware that the man I thought I was saving was about to dismantle my entire life.
