ELOWEN’S POV

The first light of dawn had barely touched the horizon when the war camp began to stir.

By the time I reached the open ground, a large crowd had already gathered. Warriors formed a wide circle around the space where Kade and Garrick would fight, their voices rising in excited whispers as they placed bets and discussed who would emerge victorious.

My eyes searched the crowd until I spotted Kade standing near the center, his arms relaxed at his sides. He looked as though he were wait

ELOWEN’S POVThe first light of dawn had barely touched the horizon when the war camp began to stir.By the time I reached the open ground, a large crowd had already gathered. Warriors formed a wide circle around the space where Kade and Garrick would fight, their voices rising in excited whispers as they placed bets and discussed who would emerge victorious. My eyes searched the crowd until I spotted Kade standing near the center, his arms relaxed at his sides. He looked as though he were waiting for an ordinary training session rather than a fight that could leave him seriously injured. My fingers curled around the edge of my cloak. He had refused to reconsider the duel despite my pleas the previous night. I had barely slept, imagining all the ways Garrick could hurt him and now there was nothing I could do but watch.“You’re going to wear a hole through the ground if you keep pacing like that.”Mira’s voice came from beside me.I glanced at her. “I’m not pacing, Mira.”“You’ve been

  • Elowen, The Alpha’s Breeding Mate    Chapter 56

Kade’s POVI had been looking for Elowen for nearly ten minutes because she had gone to collect blankets from the supply wagons, but she hadn’t returned. At first, I assumed she was with Mira but when I couldn’t find either of them near the healers, I began checking the surrounding wagons. Then I heard her voice.“Let go of me!”I turned sharply.Garrick had one hand locked around Elowen’s arm, his fingers digging into her skin as she struggled to pull away. Her blankets lay scattered in the dirt, and her other hand was pressed protectively against her stomach. For a moment, everything around me disappeared.I didn’t think. I moved, crossing the distance between us, I seized Garrick by the back of his neck and ripped him away from her.“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”Before he could answer, I slammed him against the nearest supply wagon and the impact shook the entire structure. A wooden panel cracked beneath his back, and several nearby warriors turned at the sound.Garric

  • Elowen, The Alpha’s Breeding Mate    Chapter 55

Elowen’s POVThe first time it happened, I thought I was going to die. Kade had gone with the commanders to inspect a nearby route, leaving me with Mira and the healers. He had been gone for barely an hour when the familiar nausea returned. At first, I tried to ignore it. I sat beside the wagon, sipping water and waiting for the feeling to pass but it only grew worse. My head began spinning and a strange weakness spread through my limbs.“Elowen?” Mira hurried over when she noticed me gripping the edge of the wagon.“What’s wrong?”“I don’t know. I feel strange.”She touched my forehead. “You’re sweating.”“I just need to lie down.”She helped me onto a pile of folded blankets, but even that didn’t help. My stomach twisted and I struggled to keep my eyes open.“Where’s Kade?” she asked.“With the commanders.”Mira looked toward the other end of camp. “How long has he been gone?”“I’m not sure. Why?”“Let me get the healer.” She hurried away, leaving me wondering what was happening to

  • Elowen, The Alpha’s Breeding Mate    Chapter 54

Kade’s POVI had noticed Elowen growing quieter during the journey. She still helped Mira with the supplies and insisted on doing her share but the colour had gradually faded from her face. More than once, I caught her leaning against a wagon or rubbing her temples when she thought nobody was watching.I assumed the journey was wearing her down. The roads were unforgiving, the weather colder than expected and even my trained warriors were beginning to feel the strain. Elowen wasn’t a soldier and I couldn’t expect her to endure the march as easily as the rest of us.Still, when I saw her struggling to lift a basket that Mira could barely manage alone, I intervened.“Put that down.”She looked at me. “I can carry it.”“I didn’t ask whether you could, put it down now.”“Kade, it’s just a basket.”“And apparently, it’s too heavy for you.”Mira took it from her before she could argue.“Thank you,” she said, giving me a knowing look.I ignored her and turned away. Elowen muttered something

Elowen’s POVKade stared at me for several seconds, his jaw tightening as he considered my answer before looking away.“Stay away from Garrick during the war.”I frowned. “I beg your pardon?”“You heard me. Don’t be alone with him and don’t entertain whatever nonsense he comes up with.”“I’m perfectly capable of handling Garrick.”“I know.”“Then why are you telling me what to do?”His gaze returned to mine. “Elowen, I don’t want him bothering you.”I folded my arms. “Wow, you sound jealous.”“I’m not.”I bit back a smile. “You could simply admit that you don’t like seeing him near me.”Kade stepped closer, his expression unreadable. “I don’t like seeing a man who can’t control himself anywhere near a woman he has already mistreated. Is that clear enough?”My smile faded.“Yes.”“Good. Now get some sleep. We leave at dawn.”He turned away but I caught the irritation still lingering on his face. The war party set out the following morning.I travelled with Mira and the healers, surroun

  • Elowen, The Alpha’s Breeding Mate    Chapter 52

Kade’s POVI learned Garrick would be joining the war party from a Northern commander who seemed far too pleased with the news.“Garrick has been reinstated,” he announced as I entered the training grounds. “The King believes his experience will be useful against the Eastern Pack.”I stopped walking.“Reinstated?”“His suspension has been lifted. He will lead one of the units.”The King had decided to put a man with a personal grudge against me on the battlefield and expected me to work alongside him. “What a brilliant decision,” I said dryly. “Nothing inspires confidence like sending a man with questionable judgment into battle.”The commander frowned. “Garrick is a respected warrior.”I walked away before he could defend his precious warrior further.I had no interest in Northern politics, but I knew enough about Garrick to recognize a problem when I saw one. The man was violent, arrogant and incapable of accepting that Elowen no longer belonged to him, if she ever had.Worse, he w
