Kelanar sits on her bed. It's soft and warm. She just wants to curl up and cry herself to sleep. She knows she can’t, as she needs to pack to leave in the morning as well as talk to her mother and sister. They will want some answers. Answers she herself didn’t know. She doesn’t know why she attacked Gage. What made her pick up that rock and smash it into his skull? She hears her mother come in.
“What did the judge say? It must not be too bad if you’re home, my dear. Tell me what happened?” begs Sarah.
Kelanar turns to Sarah, trying to not cry.
“He realized that I was sorry and not sure what happened, but thinks it could happen again. I am sentenced to the Guard Tower for a year and only allowed to come home on the weekends.”
Sarah sits on the bed beside her daughter and holds her.
“Oh, my daughter, a year is a long time. At least it wasn’t jail or banishment. My heart couldn’t take that. We will see you on the weekends. This could be part of a bigger plan. We have to trust the goddess has a reason for you to be at the guard, keep my darling.”
Kelanar hugs her mother and tries to put on a brave face.
“I know mother, I have faith and I know I must live my path no matter where it takes me. A year isn’t that long. I am sure I will learn much while I am gone. I worry for Eve. We have never been apart before. I hope it will strengthen our bond and not hurt either of us.”
“You have always taken care of your sister. She will be fine. She will have me. I worry for you, my child. The keep is a day's ride away from here. You have never been that far from home without your family before.”
Kelanar just lets her mother hold her for a while.
“I know mother I will be ok, but I must pack my bag. I leave in the morning.”
“I know. Once you’re done, come downstairs. We need to have a meal together before you go.”
Kelanar nods, gets up, gathers blouses, skirts and pants and places them in a small bag. She picks up a locket Hector gave her and puts it around her neck. She needs the comfort it always brings her.
A short time later, she smells her mother's famous Shepherd's pie and her stomach growls. She gets up to have dinner with her family and faces her twin sister.
Kelanar goes down the stairs. She hears her mother and sister sing as they cook. She thinks I am going to miss this.
She prays to the goddess, “Please keep them safe and help me take on this path. Give me the strength to survive this.”
She walks into the kitchen.
“About time you came down, mom wouldn’t let me come up to bother you. Mom told me what is going on. I am sorry, Kelanar, what a rough day, ”says Eve.
Kelanar hugs her twin sister.
“I know, but it will be ok. I will be home on the weekends, and this will go by fast. Until then, help mother and the healers for me.”
Eve nods and sets the table for dinner.
“Can I help with anything?” Kelenar asks her mother.
“No, darling, we've got it. Just sit down, we will say grace and eat,” says Sarah.
Kelanar sits at the table. She watches her mother place the food on the table, her eyes not dazzling tonight, and her hair is pulled back in a bun. Sarah's gray was showing. Kelanar knows this is hard on her mother and she feels terrible about causing her this unneeded stress and worry. Once everyone is seated and everyone has a plate full of food, Sarah takes Kelenar and Eve’s hands.
“Let’s say grace. Goddess, we ask that you bless the food we are about to receive. Watch over Kelanar in this alternative path she is about to embark on and keep her safe,” says Sarah.
Kelanar squeezes her mother's hand and adds,“And please keep my mother and sister happy and well while I am gone. Keep us all well. In your name we pray."
“Amen,” all three of them say.
They all eat in silence, lost in their own thoughts. Kelanar knows she won’t sleep much tonight.
Kelanar tosses and turns all night, unable to sleep much. In the morning, Sheriff James shows up. Kelanar hugs her mother and sister.
“I will see you this weekend. It will be ok," she tells her mother and sister.
They hug her back. Kelanar picks up her bag and gets on the sheriff's wagon. It's a long ride to the tower. She had been there only once, when she was a young girl.
The ride is mostly silent, besides a few words here and there from Sheriff James until they are about 20 minutes from the tower.
“Kelanar, you will be fine. They are just a bunch of men and boys learning to be guards. Just do as you’re told, and it will be fine. Master John will be the one you will answer to. I sent word last night that you will be coming today, and he already said he will look after you," says Sheriff James.
Kelanar looks at him.
“I know I will be fine. I heard how the tower is, and that is why I am being sent here. In case I act out again. Will you keep an eye on my mother for me, please?"
“I will check in with your mother and sister and I will come get you every weekend unless I get word otherwise.”
“Thank you.”
Kelanar spies a wall and a small castle. The wall is to keep the neighboring kingdom from crossing into their kingdom. The castle is old, but made of stone and is thus sturdy. It houses the guards and their training center.
They go to the front of the castle, coming to a stop. She grabs her bag. James takes her inside. They head to an office close to the front door. James knocks and goes in. There is a man in his forties with black hair and green eyes sitting at a desk.
“Hello, old friend, I got your letter about a woman being sentenced here. That is odd. We've never had a woman here before,” says Master John.
“I know John, it is an odd thing, but that's the order. She is a sweet girl who just got into some trouble. Nothing you can’t handle, though.”
John looks her up and down.
“Yeah, she will be fine. I have set up a room for her by mine so she could feel safe, and the boys will leave her alone. We will see you next time, friend. I will take her from here.”
Sheriff James nods and turns to Kelanar.
“I will see you later. Listen to Master John and all will be well.”
Sheriff James leaves Kelanar alone with Master John.
Hector gets up and searches the bathroom. A few bottles of cleaning supplies, towels and soaps are what he finds when he opens the cabinets. He gets into the shower and washes his body. It leaves him feeling refreshed after his last encounter with the maze. His mind drifts to Kelanar and what she could be doing. Hector is so lost in thought that he doesn’t hear the knocking on the door until Ruby is standing by the shower yelling at him. “Hector, hurry. I need a shower and we are going to be late!” yells Ruby. “I am coming,” Hector calls out. He is breathing hard after being scared. Quickly shutting off the water, he dries off and goes into the room with a towel wrapped around his waist. “About time, Hector,” shouts Ruby. Ruby goes into the bathroom, and he hears the shower turn on. Hector gets dressed. He wears the vampire uniform. By the time he is dressed, Ruby is out and dresses herself. He looks away to give her privacy. “Tell me, what you were so distracted about that yo
Skorn watches Rex leave his study. His newest project seems to be doing very well. Hector has surpassed all his other vampires at this stage of the training. Skorn expects he will continue to see this at each level of the tests. Skorn gets up from his desk and he feels a sharp pain in his chest. He calls out as he falls. Jack, his most trusted friend, comes in. “Sire, are you unwell?” asks Jack. “I don’t know. I feel a sharp pain in my chest. Something is wrong. I need you to figure it out, Jack,” orders Skorn. “Yes, My Lord. Let’s get you to your bed where I can do a full scan to see what’s going on with you.” Jack helps Skorn to his feet, to his bedchamber and into bed. Jack, using his magic, scans Skorn’s body to locate what is causing his king’s illness. He scans Skorn from top to bottom, and finds nothing plaguing his body or mind. He is quite puzzled about it all. “Sire, I can’t seem to find anything that is causing you this pain. I don’t understand it. You spoke of a cu
Kelanar watches as Sheriff James leaves. She feels alone when she realizes that this is really happening. She stands there with her bag, ready to embrace her fresh path. Her chest feels heavy with dread. Try to put on a friendly and brave face. She is on her own. Master John looks Kelanar over and thinks about what to do with a woman at an all-men camp. “Come, I will show you to your room and then we will go over what you are going to be doing in your time here,” says Master John. Kelanar follows him back through the door and up a flight of stairs to the second floor, then down the left hall to where there are three doors. “The first door is to my room, if you need anything. The second will be your room. When you’re not doing your chores and helping the cook, it is best if you are here. The boys can, well, be boys.” “I understand. What are my duties while I am here?” asks Kelanar. “Help with all the meals and clean up as well clean the castle and any other room I or the cook t
Hector explores the library where he finds many books about witches, werewolves and sirens. He is curious and grabs a few books to read. He tracks Mrs.Blake down in her office. “Are we allowed to check out books?” asks Hector. She smiles and sees a stack of books in his hands. “I know you’re in training, so as long as you do what you’re supposed to, I don’t see the harm and will let you check them out.” “Thanks, I just want something to help pass the time.” “I know the feeling. You look so familiar. What's the last name?” “Hector Ale.” “Do you know much about your family?” she asks with a curious look. “Not much to tell. Father is dead, Mother is a barmaid in Sung and I don’t have any other family. Why do you ask?” “Well, you just seem like someone I used to know. Maybe I am mistaken . Your books, do take care of them. Hector, be careful. This is a dangerous world.” He leaves with his books thinking, she was acting very weird. He heads back to his and Ruby’s room. He sits
The next morning, Kelanar rises early and takes a quick shower before heading down to start on breakfast. Kelanar gets to the bottom of the stairs when she hears arguing. She peaks around the corner and spies two boys. One is Henry, and the other is an unknown boy. It looks like they are fighting. “Henry, what is your problem?” “My problem is you, Conner.” “You and your team have been nothing but a thorn in my side. If I ever catch you around my dorm again messing with my squad, I will put you flat on your back.” “Like you can, Henry. We both know the twins aren’t cut out for this life. You will have no one on your side soon enough. Then my team and I will take the lead and you will be left behind and alone.” Henry goes to attack when he notices Kelanar standing on the steps and thinks better of it. “Get out of here Conner, before I show you who you’re messing with.” “Whatever Henry, I'll see you on the training field. We can settle it there.” Conner walks off towards the mes
At dawn, Hector is woken up by a loud bang on the cell door. “Wake up, Hector. We have work to do,” shouts Rex . Hector’s back is on fire, and he hurts all over. His mouth is dry, and he feels like crap. He pulls himself up to a sitting position and rubs his eyes. “Ok, I am up. Do I have time for a shower?” asks Hector. “Yes, that's why I am getting you up now. Your teammates should be getting up soon. If you want that shower, you better hurry.” Hector walks out of the cell and heads upstairs to his room. When he gets to his room, he sees Ruby getting dressed. “Well, he returns. You look like shit. What happened to you and where were you?” asks Ruby. “I don’t have time to talk about it. I need a shower before training,” growls Hector. “ Someone is in a bad mood. Whatever, suit yourself. Shower is free.” Hector doesn’t waste time. He quickly goes into the bathroom and begins to strip off his pants and underwear. He never put his shirt back on last night. He turns on the wate
Rex heads to speak to Skorn and report on Hector. Rex see Skorn door is open and Skorn is resting in his bed. Rex knocks on the door. “Enter,” orders Skorn . “Sorry to bother you, sire, but I have some issues with Hector that you need to know about,” says Rex. “Speak: what’s the issue?” “During the hunting phase of the training, he didn’t kill the rabbit. He preferred to face pain rather than kill an innocent: his words. What are your orders to deal with this?” “I see. What punishments have you already tried?” “Sire, I gave him the options of facing the sun and burning or killing the rabbit. He picked the sun and is now back in his room." “This isn’t good. How can I have an assassin who will not kill an innocent rabbit? Hector will not want to kill his mark. This is what we are training him for.” “I know, Sire. Your orders on how to fix this? Should I put him in the sunroom, or extend the no food order he already has? No food for 24 hours or what are your orders?” “Yes, s
Hector is in his room resting after being burned by the sun and the whipping, but he knows he made the right choice. Even if Rex isn’t happy with him and possibly Lord Skorn too. He hopes that this is the only punishment he will get for his disobedience, but he feels that might not be the case. Rex normally doesn’t send him to his room without completing a task or running out of time. Hector is in deep thought when Rex comes into his room. “Hector, you disobeyed a direct order, and we can’t have you doing that. You were burned by the sun, but Lord Skorn doesn’t think that is enough. So, you will bear a punishment that he has chosen until you’re willing to do the original order without question. Do you understand?” asks Rex . Hector gets off his bed and stands up with some pain. He knows he can’t fight them. “I understand you’re going to punish me for not killing the innocent rabbit. I will be punished until I do,” says Hector. “Good, the punishment is the sunroom until you agree t
