Chapter 6

Author: Peary Peary
Maybe Zach was afraid to hear about my death from someone else, so he cut himself off from the world. He took out his SIM card and stayed at home for days, his mind in a deep haze.

He ate instant noodles when he was hungry, drank cold water when he was thirsty, and slept with my clothes in his arms. The wedding band on his finger still gleamed in silver.

I almost believed it… Maybe, just maybe, I was truly the love of his life.

But reality wasn't like that. I was simply someone he could throw away whenever he felt like it.

Jessica's visit finally broke the silence. When Zach saw her, he was stunned for a second.

She squeezed through the door and threw her arms around him, looking up with a bright smile.

"Annie's finally dead! There is justice in this world, after all! Now there's no one between us, Zach. You don't need to marry her and spend your whole life making up for your mistakes or worry about facing her again. We can finally love each other freely!"

She was beaming, her

"Annie! Annie Carter! Wake up! You, the boy next to her—give her a nudge."Someone gently nudged my elbow, pulling me out of the endless darkness. The blurry scene in front of me slowly cleared.I turned my head and saw Wade's face, and my heart skipped a beat."For question sixteen, the answer's C," Wade whispered, covering his mouth.I ignored the answer and just stared straight at Wade, reaching out to touch his face. It was warm.Wade froze, his pupils dilating, his cheeks and ears turning pink."Annie, what are you… we're still in class…" He looked away, flustered. This wasn't a dream. The drowsy class instantly woke up. Our classmates all gasped loudly and playfully, "Oh!"Our homeroom teacher slammed the desk, furious. "What's this? What are you two doing? I'm still right here! You two lovebirds… Don't you feel any shame? You two can forget about this class! Stand outside right now and call your parents here this afternoon!"After standing outside the classroom for

Zach donated all his assets to welfare homes, astonishing the entire city. Everyone said Zach had gone insane. Some guessed it was because his beloved Jessica had suddenly gone completely blind for some unknown reason. Since modern medicine couldn't help her, Zach was trying to do good deeds in hopes of some divine intervention. Others said it was because his girlfriend of seven years, Annie, had died. But as soon as that theory was mentioned, it got ruthlessly mocked online."Annie Carter? Zach only stayed with her to stop her from getting revenge on Jessica. Him helping Annie win the lawsuit was just something he staged for Jessica's sake. Even their recent engagement was supposed to be between him and Annie. The moment Jessica complained, she became the bride instead. Isn't it obvious who Zach really cared about?""They were together for seven years, though. There had to be some love between them, right?""That's not love. That's putting up with someone for seven years for the

Soon, Zach found Wade. This was the first time I had seen Wade since we last met. He looked much more worn out, with stubble all over his chin and dark circles under his eyes."What are you doing here?" Wade's tone was cold, and he tried to shut the door. But Zach spotted the urn sitting right in the middle of the living room. Wade had kept my ashes safe all this time. He had only said he had scattered them at sea to shock Zach.He couldn't stand how Zach had treated me.Zach's dull eyes suddenly lit up, and he tried to squeeze inside. "I'm here to bring Annie home, doctor."Wade slammed the door in his face, hitting Zach's forehead hard enough to draw blood. However, Zach just stared at the urn, repeating, "I'm here to bring Annie home."Wade's eyes were full of disgust. "You never cherished her when she was alive. And now, you only start to regret it once she's gone? Is your love that cheap?"Zach said nothing as he looked down. He finally found his chance, slipped past Wade

Wade quickly pulled himself together, wiping away his tears. No one would have guessed he had just broken down.My body was covered with a white sheet. As Wade wheeled me down the hallway, I saw Zach sitting outside the operating room, praying for Jessica. When the emergency room doors opened, the doctor said, "The surgery was a success."Zach hugged Jessica, crying tears of joy. He glanced at my stretcher, but quickly looked away.It was Wade who handled my funeral. On the day of my cremation, Zach was busy peeling apples for Jessica. She didn't like the skin.By the time my body was reduced to a small pile of ashes, Zach still had not shown up. It was not until Jessica's face had become round and she looked perfectly healthy again that Zach finally remembered me.He didn't know which room I'd been in, so he went to Wade's office.Wade had nothing but coldness for a cheater like Zach. He just said, "I have no idea.""If you hear anything about Annie, please let me know right

I could clearly see the panic in Zach's eyes.He wanted to explain, but Jessica stepped in front of him with a frown. "Your mother was dying of cancer, anyway. Donating her corneas at the end of her life is something to be proud of!"I didn't care what happened to me, but she was insulting my mother… That was something I couldn't tolerate.Rage flared up inside me. I marched up to Jessica and slapped her hard across the face. I didn't hold back—she stared at me in shock, a red handprint forming on her cheek."Show some respect for my mother," I said coldly. My stomach started to hurt again from the anger, but I forced myself to ignore the metallic taste in my throat.Zach, afraid I'd hit Jessica again, suddenly grabbed my wrist. His grip was hard enough to hurt me. "Annie… Annie, I know you're angry right now. But Jess is an artist. That accident overseas nearly ruined her life. Your mother was a perfect match, and she was already at stage four cancer. Her chances of survivi
