Chapter 3

Author: Cher
"These herbs need to be picked on the night of the full moon."

I flipped through the ancient texts in the castle library, searching for ways to purify the toxin in Damon's body.

I'd been living in the Alpha's castle for a month now. It was much warmer here than in the elder family's stone tower. At least no one treated me like an anomaly.

"Luna, are you studying herbology again?" Thomas Wraith, the castle's old steward, walked in.

"Yes, I want to help the Alpha recover." I closed the book. "Thomas, could you help me prepare some herbs?"

"Of course, Luna." Thomas smiled kindly. "The Alpha is very fortunate to have a mate like you."

I shook my head bitterly. Damon never thought so.

Over the past month, his attitude toward me had shifted from initial coldness to reluctant acceptance. We lived in the same castle but rarely spoke. Whenever we met, he maintained a strictly professional tone.

However, I hadn't given up.

Every night, I brewed detoxifying potions for him and used my weak Luna power to help drive out the toxins. He resisted at first, but after seeing that the potions were actually working, he began to allow my treatment.

"Tonight's potion is ready." I knocked on Damon's study door.

"Come in." His voice remained distant.

I walked in carrying a tray and placed the potion on his desk. "Drink it while it's hot. It works better that way."

Damon glanced at me and drained the cup in one gulp.

"It tastes bitter." He frowned.

"Good medicine tastes bitter," I said softly. "Your complexion is much better than last month."

It was true. Under my careful treatment, the toxin in his body was slowly dissipating. His pale face had regained color, and his weakened body was filling with strength again.

"Thank you," he said unexpectedly.

This was the first time he'd expressed gratitude to me, and my heart instantly started racing.

"It's what I should do." I lowered my head. "After all, we're..."

"Mates." He finished the word for me, his voice softer than usual.

I looked up at him and found him gazing at me. In that moment, the relationship between us truly began to improve.

In the days that followed, Damon became much gentler with me. He would ask about my preferences during meals, light candles for me when I studied ancient texts, and even began initiating conversations with me.

On one full moon night, we completed our true mate bond. Damon treated me tenderly, as if I were truly his beloved mate. I lost myself in this false sweetness, thinking I had finally won his heart.

But the good times didn't last.

"Lydia's back!"

The news spread throughout the entire castle. I was in the garden picking herbs when I heard the servants' excited chatter.

"I heard she traveled everywhere learning new healing arts."

"The Alpha must be so happy. They grew up together, so their bond runs deep."

My hands trembled slightly when I heard this. I even nearly cut my finger.

At that evening's celebration banquet, I saw Lydia again after so long. She was more beautiful than when she left. Her golden hair cascaded over her shoulders like a waterfall, and her bright blue eyes sparkled.

"Damon!" The moment she saw him, she threw herself into his arms. "I missed you so much!"

The hall fell silent instantly. Everyone watched this scene, including me. Damon froze for a second, then gently pushed her away. "Lydia, mind the occasion."

Still, his eyes were tender in a way I'd never seen before.

"Elena, you remember Lydia," he reintroduced her to me. "We grew up together."

"Hello, Luna." Lydia curtsied politely to me, but a flash of barely concealed hostility flickered in her eyes.

From that day on, Lydia inserted herself into our lives. She used learning pack affairs as an excuse to attend all the meetings. She used concern for Damon's health as a reason to frequently enter our private spaces.

Worse still, Damon's attitude toward her behavior shifted from resistance to acceptance.

"Lydia says she's learned new healing methods. I thought perhaps they could help me," Damon explained when I questioned it.

"Lydia has known me since childhood. Her suggestions are very practical," he answered when I asked why she had to attend pack meetings.

Gradually, rumors began circulating through the pack.

"Lydia is the true Luna in the Alpha's heart."

"Elena is just an outsider. How could she compare to a bond formed since childhood?"

"I heard the oracle originally chose Lydia. Elena's nothing but a substitute."

These words cut into my heart like knives. But what hurt most was that when I heard these rumors, Damon stood right beside me and didn't say a single word in my defense.

Even so, I never thought about dissolving the mate bond with Damon, because I had truly fallen deeply in love with him. At least not until he chose Lydia in the fire.

"Are you sure you're not going back?"In the Sacred Hall's moonlit garden, Kane and I sat side by side on the stone steps. I'd been back at Sacred Hall for a week now, and the tranquility here had finally helped me move past the darkness."Yes, I'm sure." I nodded. "There's nothing left there worth holding onto."Kane turned to look at me. There was an emotion in his eyes I couldn't quite read. "What about your friends?""Sarah and the others will understand." I smiled softly. "Besides, this place isn't far from the Silvermoon pack. They can come visit me."As we talked, Sarah came running into the garden."Elena!" she called out breathlessly. "Something major happened!""What is it?" I stood up worriedly."Damon broke ties with your grandfather's elder family!" Sarah said excitedly. "He uncovered evidence that the elders were embezzling pack resources. The entire family is under judgment now!"I froze. The news came too suddenly."Your grandfather and the others are all lock

Just then, an angry voice cut through the crowd."Enough! When are you people going to stop this!"It was Sarah. She pushed through the crowd and strode furiously to the center."Damon!" Sarah pointed at him. "You have the nerve to accuse Elena of betrayal? Don't you know who betrayed whom?"The onlookers fell silent, waiting for Sarah to continue. Damon's face grew paler and paler."You dare talk about betrayal? Have you forgotten what Elena did for you? Who purified your toxins day and night? Who gave up her own cultivation to care for you?"And how did you repay her? You abandoned her in a fire for another woman!"I turned to look at Sarah. I knew what she was about to say, but it was time Damon learned these truths."Do you even know what happened the night of the vampire attack?" Sarah pointed at Damon. "Do you know how badly Elena was injured?"Damon's expression changed. "Elena was injured? But Lydia said...""Lydia said Elena was fine?" Sarah laughed sarcastically. "O

"I want to go to the best restaurant for a meal," I said to Sarah the next day. Since I rarely came back here, I wanted to enjoy myself properly.Sarah nodded in agreement. "I know a good one in the city center."Blue Moon Restaurant was the most upscale place in town, lavishly decorated with an elegant atmosphere. We found a window seat and sat down. Kane was also in the Silvermoon pack territory for pack negotiations, so I invited him to join us."Are you sure about leaving the Silvermoon pack?" Sarah asked while cutting her steak."I left long ago." I sipped my red wine. "I'm a free wolf now.""What about the priestess selection...""I'm determined to succeed." My eyes gleamed with resolve. "This is my new beginning."Sarah looked at me with admiration. "You've changed so much.""Have I?""You're more confident and independent." Sarah paused, then continued, "Before, you were always worrying about Damon. Now you finally have your own life."I was deeply grateful that my

"I didn't expect to run into you here."In the ancient library of Moon Goddess Sacred Hall, a familiar voice came from behind me. I turned to see Kane standing between the bookshelves, an ancient text in his hands."Kane?" I stood up in surprise. "What are you doing here?""I'm a representative of the Blackstone pack, here for the Sacred Hall council meeting." He approached and set his book on the table. "You? The priestess selection?""Yes." I nodded. "Thank you for saving me that day."Kane's expression softened slightly. "You look much better than you did then."It was true. These three months of peaceful living had helped me rediscover myself. I was no longer that humble, eager-to-please Luna, but an independent werewolf about to become a Moon Goddess priestess."Your injuries..." Kane asked with concern."Already healed." I touched my chest lightly. "The Moon Goddess' power has self-healing properties."We spent a long time talking in the library, discussing everything fr

"You're actually still alive."Grandfather stood at my cabin door with several elders behind him. Their expressions showed no concern but anger.Three months after dissolving the mate bond, I'd been living an unprecedentedly peaceful life. Every day I practiced my Moon Goddess power, studied ancient texts, and prepared to participate in the once-a-century Moon Goddess priestess selection. But they shattered that peace.Grandfather looked at me coldly. "We're here to tell you about a decision."I waited for their judgment."You went on and dissolved the mate bond despite our attempts to stop you," Elder Mary said. "There are already rumors in the pack that we failed to raise you properly.""And?" I asked calmly."So you must go back and find a way to rebuild your relationship with Damon," Grandfather ordered. "Even if you can't be Luna, you at least need to maintain some kind of connection to preserve the family's reputation."I nearly laughed out loud. "Are you joking?""Elen

"Vampires! Vampires are attacking!"The guard's shouts tore through the night sky. I jolted awake to see flames blazing outside the window. We'd come to the border to inspect the defenses, but Damon had insisted on bringing Lydia along. Now, danger had truly arrived."Luna!" A soldier's voice carried up from downstairs, more urgent than I'd ever heard.I hastily threw on my coat and rushed out of my room, nearly colliding with an equally panicked Lydia."What do we do?" She grabbed my arm in terror. "I'm scared! Elena, I don't want to die!""Don't be afraid. We'll figure something out together." I tried to comfort her while scanning for an escape route. But the fire spread too quickly. The staircase was already blocked by flames. Thick smoke billowed up from below, and we were trapped on the second floor."Damon!" Lydia leaned out the left window, screaming for help. "Save me! Please save me!"I called for help from the right window as well, but unease crept into my heart. If
