Luca's laughter was still echoing through the hallway when Mia finally pushed Mark away."Don't smile.""I'm not.""You are.""I'm breathing.""Suspiciously."Mark looked completely innocent.Which somehow made it worse. Before Mia could argue again, her phone vibrated. An invitation.A charity auction hosted by the city's elite. At the bottom was one handwritten line.Come alone. We need to talk. — IsabellaMia's smile disappeared."You are absolutely not going."Luca folded his arms. “ I thought she left the country?”Mark nodded once."No."Mia looked from one man to the other."I wasn't asking permission.""You should start, Maybe she's back for revenge," Luca replied. She ignored him."It's a public event.""It's a trap," Mark answered."It's Isabella.""Exactly."Mia sighed."She wants a reaction."Mark met her eyes."Then don't give her one."That evening, Mia attended anyway. Not alone. She simply didn't know that six Romano guards, Luca, and Mark himself were spread across th

"Take her. Leave him alive."The words stayed in Mia's mind long after the report was locked away. She couldn't sleep. So before sunrise, she walked into the mansion's private training room. The lights were still off.Only the pale morning sun filtered through the windows. She picked up a practice knife and stared at it."You'll hurt yourself if you hold it like that."She didn't turn around."I knew you were following me."Mark walked in wearing black training clothes, his sleeves rolled to his elbows."I wasn't following you.""No?""I woke up and my wife disappeared."She smiled."That's following."He took the practice knife from her hand and replaced it correctly."Again."An hour later, Mia was exhausted. She attacked.Mark sidestepped. She kicked. He blocked. She lunged. He gently caught both her wrists. For the tenth time."This is annoying.""It's called losing.""I preferred yesterday.""You also lost yesterday."She sighed dramatically."I married a very irritating man."He

The blood was gone. The stain on the hospital floor had been scrubbed away before sunrise. But Mia still saw it.Every time she closed her eyes.Every time she looked at her hands.Every time the little girl's voice echoed in her head."You saved me."She hadn't slept.Neither had Mark.He sat quietly in the study, reading reports while pretending not to watch her.It wasn't working. She was pretending not to notice. That wasn't working either. The next morning, Luca burst into the mansion with unusual energy.Which was saying something."Good news."Nobody answered. He looked at Mia."You're officially a hero."She frowned."I killed someone.""You saved thirty-seven people.""That's not the part I'm remembering."Luca's smile disappeared. Before he could reply, another man entered the study.Older.Well dressed. One of Don Romano's political advisors. His expression was grim."Don."Don Romano looked up."What is it?"The advisor placed several newspapers on the table.Every headlin

"Watch carefully.""Soon, she'll choose where innocent people die."The message refused to leave Mia's mind. She read it once. Then twice. Then locked the phone away. But the words stayed.Mark doubled her security.Luca argued that she shouldn't leave the mansion.Don Romano silently agreed. For the first time, Mia didn't fight them. That alone worried Mark. Two days later, she insisted on visiting a Romano-owned children's hospital."It was scheduled weeks ago," she said."It's public," Mark replied."I know.""It's dangerous.""I know.""They'll expect you.""I know."Mark sighed."You keep saying that.""Because it's true."Luca looked between them."I suddenly miss when you two argued about towels."Neither of them laughed. The visit started peacefully.Children ran through the halls carrying balloons.Doctors smiled.Nurses chatted.Parents thanked the Romano Foundation for funding treatments. For an hour, Mia almost forgot there was a war.A little girl tugged on her sleeve."M

And the enemy wasted no time.Three days later, the first article appeared. Then another. Then ten more. Not gossip. Not scandals.Something far more dangerous.Analysis.Public discussions about Mark Romano. His leadership. His recent decisions. And one recurring theme appeared in every single conversation.Mia.Mia sat in the war room staring at a tablet. The headline made her want to throw it across the room.HAS ROMANO'S JUDGMENT BEEN COMPROMISED?Below it was worse.Far worse.A detailed breakdown of every major decision Mark had made since she entered his life.Every risk.Every delay.Every sacrifice.Every time he'd chosen her safety over efficiency. The facts weren't even wrong. That was the problem. The enemy wasn't lying. They were arranging the truth.Mark entered the room. One look at her expression and he sighed."What now?"She handed him the tablet. He read silently.Finished.Placed it on the table. Then continued pouring coffee.Mia blinked."That's your reaction?""

For a moment, nobody spoke.Nobody moved.Mia looked from the photograph to Mark. Then back again. The image was grainy but clear enough.A woman entering the Moretti headquarters.Elegant.Confident.Recognizable.Isabella.Luca cursed under his breath."She didn't even try to hide it."Mark remained silent.Studying the photograph.Thinking.Always thinking.Mia expected anger.Expected betrayal.Expected some reaction.Instead, Mark simply handed the phone back."Increase surveillance."Luca blinked."That's it?""That's it."Luca looked disappointed.Mia understood.Everyone expected fireworks. They got strategy.Again.The next morning, the city woke up to rumors. The first one appeared online. Then another. Then five more.Stories.Whispers.Speculation.Nobody knew where they started.Everyone knew where they ended.Mia.At first, they seemed harmless.Questions about her influence within the Romano family.Questions about her involvement in the war.Questions about whether Don
