[Xavier’s POV]
A chilly wind swept through the air, and she shuddered a bit and snuggled closer to me while I tightened my arms around her; trying to keep her warm as she pressed her head closer to my chest, her heart beating rhythmically in sync with mine.
My eyelashes fluttered as I finally opened my eyes, defying sleep. It was dawn already, and soon, she would wake up to smile. Hopefully, she wouldn’t be regretting our one night stand. I wasn’t very good at calming people down.
The memories of last night flashed through my mind, and for the first time in a very long time, a smile found its way to my lips. Most days, I minded my business, but when I had seen her being taunted and sexualised by rogues, I hadn’t been able to keep my anger in and for the first time, I had gotten myself involved in someone else’s business.
Rustling. I heard rustling among the bushes, but for a moment, I thought it was probably a squirrel. However, when I heard the sound of it again, I knew better. That was definitely not a squirrel.
Placing her gently on the makeshift bed, I stood up and grabbed my trousers which was hanging on a tree. How the hell had it even gotten there in the first place?
Pulling them on, I paused for a while and listened carefully to the sound. I couldn’t hear it anymore, but I could perceive an old familiar scent I would remember anywhere.
I heaved a relieved sigh as I buttoned my shirt which had been crouched by the pond nearby, thanks to the blondie who had flung it over there while we were having a wild time the previous night.
“Jeffrey, show yourself. I know you’re there,” I said, flexing my knuckles.
“Can I ever sneak up on you successfully?” he joked as he came from behind the tall bushes ahead of me, walking leisurely.
“Not in this life time,” I replied, moving towards him.
“I see. It would be a shame if anyone sneaked up on the next Alpha King without him knowing though. Come on, let’s head back to the Palace before someone discovers you didn’t sleep in your chambers this night,” he said.
“So what if they find out? I can’t go now. You shouldn’t have come,” I told him.
He had a worried expression written clearly on his face. He opened his mouth to say something, but hesitated and stood at akimbo, appearing to be thoughtful.
At that moment, I instantly felt that something was up.
“What’s wrong?” I inquired.
“The Alpha...,” he started, then stopped.
“What about him?” I asked, urgency ringing in my voice.
“He is home. He came back home,” he told me, and I could see as sweat trickled down his forehead even though the weather was really cold.
“He’s back already from reaching a truce with the Dark moon pack? I thought he said he would coming back in two days time,” I said.
“That’s what we all thought,” he said, his voice broke a little.
I ran my fingers through my hair, pacing around as I thought carefully. “He’ll call me a useless troublemaker again, wouldn’t he? Anyways, that won’t make me go home with you now. There’s a maiden here. I can’t leave her all alone,” I explained.
“A maiden? Where is she?” he asked, craning his neck.
I pushed his neck away. “What are you trying to do? Stare at her nakedness? Listen, no one must find out about where I am. I’ll come home once the sun rises and she has woken up,” I told him in a confidential manner.
“Xavier...”
“You can go now,” I told him, firmly, then turned my back on him.
He heaved an exasperated sigh. “You don’t understand, Xavier. The Alpha came home, but he didn’t come back in one piece,” he said, almost at the top of his voice.
I spun back around immediately. “What do you mean by that?” I inquired.
A drop of tear fell from his eyes. “He’s dead,” he responded.
“What? Are you kidding me right now?” I asked, clenching my fists as I struggled to believe the news.
“No, I am not. Some members of the Pack found him lying by the roadside, and brought his lifeless body to us. I told them that you were out hunting for deer and that you’d be back soon. You have to take care of the funeral rites,” he said to me.
I could feel my heart breaking into a million different pieces, and I gritted my teeth, shaking my head in disbelief.
“Do not cry. No Alpha’s son must shed tears,” my father’s words echoed in my head.
So, I didn’t cry. Instead, I screamed. I screamed out loud in anger, until that scream erupted into a growl; my fangs sprouted from my mouth, my claws sprung out of my fingernails and my hazel eyes darkened into an intense smoky glow.
“Calm down, Xavier. Stop! You’d hurt someone,” Jeffrey said.
I shook my head vigorously, hitting on it really hard in order for my wolf to become calm. This wasn’t the right time for this. I needed to maintain my sanity.
“H - - how did he die?” I managed to ask, regaining control of my human form.
“It wasn’t a natural death. He was ambushed and murdered by an Omega clan. We are waiting for your orders to find them and punish them in accordance to your will,” he explained.
“So, those lowly things called Omegas had the temerity to gang up and kill an Alpha King? Such audacity! My father was put to death and left to die like a beggar in the streets, and this so-called act was done by those inferior beings? How dare they!
“Summon all the guards and trackers, and find them immediately. Kill them all on sight, whoever they might be – men, women or even children, and for all those other Omegas who aren’t part of the traitorous Omega Clan, make their labour ten times harder and for the old ones who can’t work, take them to the dungeons. This would teach them never to try such again in the future. This is my order,” I told him, giving him a fierce look.
“I will let them all know,” he said, with a small bow.
“I need to tell her!” I turned towards her, realising how much it pained me to think of never seeing her again.
“You can’t! We don’t know what’s going on back at home, and even if you are serious about her, it’s too dangerous!” He grabbed my arm, and in the end, I gave in.
How could I expect her to get involved with an Alpha’s hair whose pack’s fate is at stake?
I let my wolf spring out now that I was done with giving my orders and raced on all fours to my home, the Alpha King’s Palace with anger piercing directly at my heart.
I never thought I would miss a one-night stand until later, but I could only hope to apologize for not being there when she wakes up and hope for her forgiveness.
[Layla’s POV] I could hear the chirping of beds and as the sun rays hit me, my eyelashes fluttered and I opened my eyes weakly feeling a throbbing ache in my head. I groaned as I sat up, stretching out as I looked all around me, still feeling numb as I had just woken up. Of course, he was gone. Though he had saved me, it was only a passionate night and I already knew that it would all end after that one time because nothing good ever seemed to last in my life. But, somewhere in my heart still ached a little because he wasn’t there. I didn’t even get to say goodbye to the man that had given me the most wonderful night I ever had. I looked around, and forced a small smile on. At least, no rogue or wild animal had gotten away with my clothes, much to my delight. Hurriedly, I put on the clothes as I kept on yawning repeatedly, feeling really weak. I had come all the way here just to get mushrooms for my stepmother in order to escape from her wrath, and I had only succeeded in landing
[Xavier’s POV] The funeral had gone by smoothly, but I was certain that my father wasn’t resting. How could he do so when his killers were alive and well? The messenger had come back to report that the so-called traitorous Omega clan had disappeared from their home, and the trackers were currently searching for them. My blood boiled with anger, and I had been pacing around the throne room deep in thoughts, with Jeffrey, standing by my right-hand side, just looking on. I was waiting for answers, I was waiting to see the heads of the traitors lying before my feet, I was waiting to see the entire family of those Omegas destroyed totally. I was drowning in sorrow, for my father was no more and I had become an orphan; and anger, because he had been murdered unjustly by a group of peasants. Even thinking of it made my brows crease in frustration. If I could get a hold on any one of them, I’d be sure to strangle them with my own bare hands. “The head-tracker is here,” Roman, my cousin who
[Layla’s POV] “Lock her up in the prison. She will be my personal slave and suffer endless torment and would even wish she had died today. That is my judgement,” he said, and those words kept echoing in my head. Against my will, I had forcefully been grabbed by the guards and thrown into a dark prison with no windows, condemned to not see the light of day again and to be forever enslaved to the present Alpha King. “No, I didn’t do anything wrong. Let me go,” I screamed repeatedly till I screamed out loud and opened my eyes. I heaved a deep sigh, relieved that it had all been a dream. I sat up tiredly, but when I looked around, I realised it wasn’t necessarily a dream. What happened yesterday had kept visiting me in flashbacks, dreams, trances, name it. I wanted to deny it all I could, but it wasn’t possible. I was truly a prisoner. The prison was small and very dark. I couldn’t see anything, and it only made my head swim with scary thoughts and messed up with my mind, and it had o
[Xavier’s POV] “Veronica, when did you get back?” I asked, pulling her from my embrace. “Just last night. I heard what happened, and I am so sorry. I wish I had been there, maybe I could have helped or something,” she said. “No, it’s not an issue. Thanks for sharing your condolences though,” I said to her. Apart from Jeffrey and Roman, the only other person I had been friends with since we were children was Veronica Emmet. Her father was the Chief Adviser and Head of all the elders, and her elder brother was the Head of all the warriors, while her uncle managed a district area in the Pack’s territory. She was very ladylike, and had gone to spend the summer holidays with her cousins in the other side of town. She was always neat, practical, courteous and was the typical rich pampered princess, but she was really fun to hang out with. “Won’t you offer me a seat?” she asked, taking off her gloves. “Forgive my manners,” I said, then led her by the hand, and that was when I saw the g
[Layla’s POV] I was sitting all alone in the prison again, slowly accepting that my fate was to forever remain here and die. Although I had been given two slices of bread, I had barely eaten them and I was still munching on the last slice which I had been eating for two hours now. Starving to death was a road I was willing to take rather than spending the rest of my life here. A guard approached the prison and I looked towards his direction. He unlocked the gate and gestured for me to come out. “What happened?” I asked, quizzically. “The Alpha wants to see you,” he responded. “See me?” I asked aloud, with my eyes nearly popping out of their sockets in surprise. “Yes,” he replied. I grudgingly stood up to my feet, wondering what would make the Alpha, whose name I had recently found out was Xavier, send for me. It couldn’t be for any reason other than bad news; that I was sure of. I had learned to not expect anything from him. The guard led the way, and I walked behind him, fiddl
[Xavier’s POV] I went into the throne room, feeling enraged and annoyed all at once. She had dared to speak to me in a manner no one would have tried, not considering her status or the fact that she was now my prisoner. “Perhaps, I’ve been too soft on her,” I muttered to myself. “By “her", do you mean Layla Clayton?” I heard Jeffrey ask. I looked up, only to see him standing right in the middle of the throne room, much to my surprise. “I didn’t know you were here,” I noted, approaching the throne gently, after which I sat down. “Of course, you didn’t. You seemed deeply engrossed in your thoughts. What happened?” he inquired. I shook my head dismissively. “You shouldn’t bother yourself with that. So, why are you here? Have you gotten information about the girl?” I asked. “Yes, I have. Apparently, her mother isn’t from these parts and had an affair with her father. Her birth was hidden from his wife and children until her mother suddenly died when she was five years old and her f
[Layla’s POV] I had been locked up in a cage by the guards and had been left all alone. It was as if my predicament kept getting worse as the days went by. I should have just kept quiet. Why did I have such a big mouth? My body ached terribly and I was weak and drained from all my cries and pleas for help. The sooner I got to accept my fate as the Alpha’s slave forever, the better for me. Nothing would get better with time, and hoping that things would get better was a mere wish that was never going to come through. The cold breeze began to blow, scattering everything that was in sight, and I began to shiver terribly. My skin was already badly bruised, and as if that was not enough, I was feeling really cold. Soon, it began to drizzle and I tried to crouch into another corner of the cage, but as it had bars all over, it was opened and made it easy for the breeze to pass through, and I felt even colder as seconds rolled into minutes and what was a short drizzle turned into a never-e
[Xavier’s POV] A general meeting of all the elders in the Pack had been scheduled as one hadn’t been held since the passing of my father. My aunt, Lady Millicent had spoken so much about how I needed to address the elders as their new Alpha, and even though I would rather be doing something fun right now, I agreed to meet them, and so far, it wasn’t going well. “Is it that you do not respect the elders anymore? If you don’t have the balls to punish a werecoyote, how are we sure you can lead the Pack well?” an elder asked, expressing distaste on his face. Of course, I didn’t respond. I was busy drumming my fingers on the edge of my seat, waiting for them to stop blabbing. “This is the second time he would be doing this. The first time, he let that Omega girl live, and now, not only did he let the werecoyote go scot free, he also provided him with a job. What a disgrace!” another elder contributed. “Is that all? Are you done?” I asked, several moments later. They looked away, not s
