"Is everything alright here?" Shawn cut in as sharp as a razor in the still night breeze, and its keen rim whipped up Eva's heartbeat like never before.

Eva froze, her heart pounding in her ears. She could feel Shawn's eyes on her, waiting, watching. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.

Ryan spoke first, his tone as smooth and melodious. "Yeah, man," he said, shifting in front of Eva, "she had something in her eye, tearing up and stuff, so I was just trying to help her out." A casual reassuring smile was sent their way; this, of course, was nothing to worry about.

Shawn’s gaze didn’t waver. His eyes flicked between them, suspicion clouding his features. “You okay now?” he asked, his voice deceptively even.

Eva nodded quickly. “Yes, I’m fine.” Her voice was strained, but she forced a smile, praying it looked convincing.

Shawn’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t push. “Good,” he said. “Let’s go.” He reached for her hand, his grip firm, almost too tight.

She's the victim and a witness. Her statement would have changed the whole narrative. Why isn't she here?” She raised her voice.
