Chapter Fourteen

Maximo PoV

I clearly remember the night I escaped my tower.

Unlike the fairytales adults tell little cubs around the bonfire, I was not guarded by a fiery, fire-breathing dragon. I was guarded by ferocious wolves who were ordered to kill me if I ever tried to escape. And guess who gave the order.

“Dear old daddy," I muttered, glancing at the moon goddess statue, "well, I don't blame him. I really don't. I did rip out the heart of his dearly beloved mistress on my way out of her womb.

“Don't give me that face," I scoffed at the statue, "it was not my fault. Some dandy witch cursed my pregnant mother in order to send a deadly message to the king. Unfortunately, I was growing in her belly when she was cursed and the curse ran its course on me, rather than my mother.”

“I know," I poured myself another drink made from the pear fruit I collected when I wandered outside the previous night, "I've told you my tragic story about a dozen times already. But what else have we got to talk about?”
