The First Day

The next day Scarlett was in high spirits. She woke up just before the alarm rang, spent a few minutes with Levi. She danced and sang along to her favourite songs in the shower. She spent a few minutes styling her hair, when she put her dress and stared at her reflection in the mirror, she didn’t feel self-conscious. She felt beautiful and confident. Her overall appearance mirrored how she felt on the inside. She prepared breakfast and shared it with her mother.

Even when she walked into Grayson’s, she had a radiant smile on her face. The Grayson’s floor was at the top floor of the magnificent building. It was a huge space with only a few offices, it was probably exclusively reserved for the CEO, she thought to herself.

The walls of the hall were pristine white, white fine wood panelling. There were a few decorations, but they looked like it had been randomly picked out, with no specific theme in mind. There were plastic green plants in tall white vases and there was gold painted plants.

The arts that hung on the wall, ranged from motivational pieces to random abstract images. Her eyes popped when she spotted a medium size art piece hanging at the other end on the hall. It looked out of place, it was an art of a man and woman entangled in sheet, their faces were hidden but she could make out a few of their other features. She froze on the spot; it oddly reminded her of Paris and that wild…

“Are you okay, miss?”

“Ye…yeah, just call me Scarlett.” she stuttered.

Benjamin walked up to her, and peered at the art. “I told Lucious when I first got here that this was out of place, but he said the boss liked it and picked it out himself…” he shrugged, “Really weird right...”

She chuckled dryly.

Ben’s eyes widened when he looked at her, “I am sorry, I should not be talking about the boss like that.”

She laughed to ease his worry. “Nothing to be sorry for.”

He nodded with a smile, “You will be working in that office.” He pointed it out with his finger.

Her gaze lingered on the painting. Mr Cameron Grayson, he definitely was a weird man, with a weird choice of art.

He used a key card and opened the doors. “As you already noticed, this is the exclusive part of the building, not much people have access here. Only our top employees have offices in this part of the building.”

She nodded in understanding.

“This is Mr. Grayson’s office, Lucious, his personal assistant, has a key card.” he moved his hand around, “Which is the one I am holding and have access to by virtue of being an intern under Lucious.” Benjamin explained. “A new card will be issued to you, as soon as possible…”

She scanned the office, it was sparsely decorated. Every furniture in the room was black, in perfect contrast with the white walls.

Benjamin gestured towards the adjoining door that was shut. “That is Mr. Grayson’s office. He is not in…”

He showed her around and helped her set up, not long after, she was alone in the office. There was nothing to do, the desk was uncluttered. She shut the laptop that was on the table and took out time to inspect the whole room, the walls were bare but she took a mental note to rectify that, the drawers were squeaky clean.

She arranged a few of her items inside. Minutes turned into hours, she was on her phone, she sat reclined on the chair, twirling it around. If this was work every day, then she absolutely loved it, she thought to herself.

A funny thought, popped in her head, she put on music and jumped to her feet and started dancing to the music, she twirled and turned to match the rhythm of the song. She had never felt this much happiness in a long time, she felt lighter than she had in years. She was absorbed in her dancing, she didn’t hear the door open.

“What is going on here?” Lucious asked with a loud voice grabbing her attention.

Her face flushed with embarrassment. She turned off the music. “There was no on here and..” she trailed off.

“And what?” he asked with a lifted brow. “This is a reputable establishment, with stellar work ethics and commitment to getting the job done. Our watchword is punctuality and dedication”

Scarlett bit down on her lip, to stop herself from bursting into laughter.

Lucious massaged his temples, “I can not with you all. My stress levels are at an all-time high…”

“The boss is not in…”

His eyes widened in shock, “I told him…” he murmured under his breath. “I told him he had to be at work, there is a lot to do with so little time but no, he never listens to me…no one listens to me…”

She murmured the last bit with him.

“I was hoping we could get introduced, seeing as I work with him…”

His eyes shot daggers as he looked up at her. “The boss likes his privacy, he will come only when he needs to…”

“Okay…”

He exhaled. “Never, inquire about the boss, never…”

She nodded, when he was satisfied, he walked to the adjoining doors and opened. She thought she heard a bit of possessiveness in his tone when he spoke of the boss.

The doors opened suddenly causing her to shudder.

“Do not think about him…” Lucious added, his penetrating gaze piercing into her.

Okay, it was loud and clear. She thought to herself, Lucious was definitely possessive of Mr. Grayson.

“The boss runs a billion-dollar finance company, with an endless list of clients who trust him, he is not going to be available at your every whim.”

“Of course…”

“Good.”

Lucious reappeared with a small stack of files in his hands, he dropped it on the table in front of her. “I want you to sort out these documents according to their departments, these are the pending workload Mr. Grayson will attend to, as soon as he is available. Create an ordered list for these items and send them to my email.”

She nodded in understanding.

He gave a dramatic twirl before sauntering off.

As Scarlett perused through the documents, she wondered what kind of man Mr. Grayson was, she had limited information on him, as at now all she knew was he was tardy, signed his name with a big c and g, terrible at interior decor and had weird taste in art. She was already intrigued.
