Chapter 1

Chapter One

Eva Smith sighed as the bus screeched to a stop. Looming out the window she saw people waiting for their loved ones. She knew she was not going to be as lucky as them. Nobody would be waiting for her since nobody had wanted to know since her mother had died in the accident her drug-addicted step father had caused. He had gone awol before the police could find him, leaving Eva practically an orphan.

Since she was only seventeen years old she was still a child in the eyes of the law. That is how she had come to find herself back in the quiet town of Newpark.

Today would be the first time Eva came face to face with her biological father, after ten years. Eva's parents had got divorced for reasons her mother never wanted to divulge. Eva had not seen her father since the day he walked out. At first, she received calls and letters but that did not take long to fizzle out when her father met someone new. Eva could not help but feel worthless and unimportant. Of course, her mother had showered Eva with love. She worked hard to give her a great life. Eva never went without. She missed her mother so much.

Wiping her eyes, she made her way off the bus and grabbed her small suitcase. It was all her life in one suitcase. She was exhausted from the long journey and wished someone had come to greet her.

She looked around for a vacant taxi but there were none. Noticing a blacked-out limousine she took a seat at the taxi rank and decided to wait until one became free. She pulled out her mobile phone and texted her dad to let him know she waiting for a taxi.

No reply.

She let out a sigh and pulled her jacket tighter around her as a gush of wind suddenly blew. It was a cold day in the middle of November. Eva should be at home toasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate with her mother. She missed those nights. They would often curl up on the sofa under a blanket and watch N*****x.

The night her mother died, Eva had stayed at her best friend, Lara’s house. The police turning up to inform her was the worst of her life, a time that would haunt her forever.

She had had no choice to pack up and move halfway across the world to live with her father since he was her only living parent.

He had sounded happy to have his daughter back in his life, but Eva felt if was all fake. If he had wanted her in his life then why had he not made the effort over all those years? Eva was not the six-year-old little girl he would remember her as.

He had a new life now with his wife and their twins, Eddy and Millie. Eva was certain that she would be nothing more than an inconvenience. That is why she was determined to finish school and go back home to England. There was nothing for her here.

Eva looked up as the black door of the limousine opened up and a young man around thirty got out. He was wearing a suit and black matching tie. His eyes started right across at Eva.

She looked around thinking perhaps he was waiting for someone else. Nobody was there and the bus has long some time.

Suddenly feeling very uncomfortable, Eva grabbed her phone from her bag and called her best friend. She did not pick up so Eva decided to call her boyfriend, Dan. Hearing his voice on the other end of the phone made her feel a little better.

“Oh hey, what's up?” He said not seeming very glad to hear from her. Eva was about to tell him how much she missed him when she heard a familiar voice in the background.

Lara?

What was her best friend doing with Dan? They hated each other's guts. Lara had never approved of their relationship and Dan often would say she was just jealous of their closeness.

“Dan, what's Lara doing there?” Eva mumbled, she noticed the man still staring at her.

The phone went silent for a moment. Eva swore she could hear giggling and then Dan said he had to go and would call her back later.

Eva could not believe what had just happened.

The tears were falling down her face now but she did not care. The loss of her mother and the betrayal of her best friend and boyfriend were all too much. She forgot about the stranger until he stood in front of her.

“Excuse me, Miss?” he took a seat beside her causing her to jump in fright.

“What do you want? Please don't hurt me.” she wept, becoming hysterical. The man's eyes widened in disbelief as the young woman lost her mind at him.

“I won't hurt you, I wanted to help.” He explained pointing to the limousine. “I saw there were no taxis and doesn't look like you were getting picked up any time soon. Plus it's freezing out here.” He gestured to the blanket in his hands and Eva nodded gratefully.

He draped it around her shoulders and Eva instantly felt warmer.

“Would you like a lift?”

Eva figured she could at least get out the cold a lot sooner. She had no idea how much longer she would be sitting waiting for a taxi to arrive and she was already ice cold.

“I don't want to put you out or anything.” Eva didn't want to sound to desperate even though she was.

The man smiled and held out a hand. “Names Mitchell.” Eva blushed and shook his hand.

“Eva.” she replied.

Mitchell helped her up and took her suitcase in his other hand. They walked to the limousine and got in.

Eva buckled herself in while Mitchell stared the engine up.

“My boss is at a meeting so will be a while. I'm his driver.” he flashed a toothy grin her way.

Eva looked around and felt amazed at how anyone could afford such a lavish lifestyle. She wondered if his boss were a famous singer or celebrity of some sort.

They drove in silence and a few moments passed until Mitchell stopped outside a massive house with a gated driveway. Eva looked surprised and checked the address several times before realizing this was the correct place.

Her father must be a millionaire to afford this. Mitchell helped unload new belongings. He smiled when she thanked him and he hesitated for a moment.

“Please, keep safe.” He said before driving off and leaving her alone on the driveway.

Eva was unsure what to make of it all.

Suddenly the gate beeped and opened to reveal a middle-aged woman with blonde curly hair standing on the other side. She was dressed up in a white blouse and black knee-length skirt and high heels. Eva recognised her as her father's wife. Her stepmother, Tina.

She looked Eva up and down before inviting her to come on in.

“Eva? Come on in. It's going to be a pleasure to have you with us at last.” Tina said with such fake excitement it made Eva feel even more slightly awkward.

“Your father will be back soon with the twins.” she said leading the way. Eva followed and noticed the hundred of happy smiling photos hanging on the perfectly white painted walls.

She took a deep breath and promised herself she would make the best of this situation.

Chapter Two
It was almost an hour before the twins and Eva’s father walked through the door. Eva had been awkwardly sitting on the sofa with Tina glaring at her in silence. Eva did no want to be here and it was obvious the feeling was mutual. The twins rushed through the door and bundled on Eva causing her to break out into a huge smile for the first time in forever. Evas dad stood in the shadow of the doorway studying the scene in fron tof him. He noticed how annoyed his wife looked sitting with a blank look on her face. The twins on the other hand were full of excitement and happiness to see their big sister. Tims eyes fell onto the tall slim young teenager, she was beautiful. Her long auburn hair was plaited in two french plaits and she had her mothers smile. Tim felt saddened that he had missed out on so much of his daughters life. He was determined to make up for it now though. “Everly Janice Smith, wow look how youve grown. Almost Taller than your old man, i see.” he entered

Chapter Three
Eva woke to her alarm going off, she groaned as she pulled the duvet right up over her head and realised today was the day she started at her brand new school. Only one year! That's all it was going to be then she could go home where she longed to be more than anything. Eva had enjoyed their evening out last night, although Tina had not exactly made her feel welcomed, the twins certainly made up for their mother's hostility. Quickly getting up and throwing her feet over the edge of the bed she felt for her favourite fluffy slippers and shrieked when a hand grabbed her ankle and she heard two muffled giggles from underneath the bed. Eva rolled her eyes and grinned with amusement at her twin siblings trying to prank her like that. It was nice to have a little brother and sister around. “Oh I spy two little monsters that need a good tickle.” she teased as they both shrieked with laughter and jumped on her messy bed. Millie was thrilled to have a big sister to look up to while Eddi

Chapter Four
Eva stepped up the pathway and took in the new surroundings that would now be her new school, during the last year of her school journey. She took a deep breath and gripped her bag tightly to her chest. “Name?” Eva stopped and looked at the tall figure blocking the doorway. He was huge, over six feet and had a clipboard in his hands. “Eva Smith,” she stated and the man glanced at her for a second before turning back to his clipboard. He grunted when he found her name and allowed her to enter. “This is your class schedule. She will show you where you need to be.” He handed Eva the information that she needed and pointed to a girl opposite. The girl was wearing a name tag which read Nessie. Eva noticed that she was a pretty girl with glasses and probably a bit of a nerd. She was dressed in a smart white shirt with a black tie that matched her black skirt and tights. Her shoes looked hideous to Eva but she didn't say a word about that. “Hi Eva. Welcome to our school. I will show

Chapter Five
Eva was in so much trouble. Her father was going to be so furious when he found out about this. Not that Eva blamed him. She was annoyed at herself for letting someone tear her down and make her lose her temper on the first day at her new school. Tina was going to have a field day since she already hated having her stepdaughter living in her home. She would probably kick her to the curb if we had her way. Eva was sitting in the office waiting to be called in to see the head. Megan was opposite her and throwing a dagger looking her way. They were both silents. The door opened and the head teacher appeared. He did not look too impressed at the sight of the two girls in front of him.“What's the meaning of this?” he demanded to know. “It was my fault, sir,” Megan said through fake crocodile tears. Eva frowned wondering what she was up to. “I walked into her and in apologised but she lost her temper and attacked me.” Megan wept. Eva could not believe the nerve of this girl. She had

Chapter Six
Tina was fuming when she found out that Eva had been sent home early for fighting. She hated the fact that this would be a bad influence on her twins. They had always been so well behaved and Tina could see how happy that they were to finally have their big sister with them. “Do you think this is funny?” She shouted at Tim and glanced at the clock to notice it was almost time to pick up the twins. Tim shrugged his shoulder and stirred his coffee like it was no big deal at all. Eva did not like the way that her stepmother had a huge problem with her being in their home. She wanted to make an effort. “I will come along with you to pick up the twins?” Eva suggested but the look of horror on Tina’s face made her stifle a laughter. Tim was certain that she needed to just lighten up a little, she was far to Snobby sometimes. “No. I can manage.” She grumbled before stomping off to the car. She did not even say bye but Tim was not fussed about her right now. He would have words with his

Chapter Seven
Eva sat on her bed and quietly stared at the wall where she had placed so many photographs of her childhood with her mother. Both of them happy and smiling. Eva felt her eyes begin to well up with tears as she looked at the photo, remembering the good times. Why had her mother had to leave her?She missed her so much. Wiping her wet cheeks with the palm of her hands, Eva picked up her phone from the bedside unit and frowned at the unknown caller id. She decided to ignore it but a few seconds later, it came up again. Whoever was ringing certainly did not give up so easily. Feeling slightly irritated, Eva picked up the phone and said hello. Nothing. “Who is this?” she sighed, not in the mood to be messed about. “Eva?” She froze at the sound of the familiar female voice on the other end of the phone.Lara. She sounded really upset but then Eva wondered why should she care since her so-called best friend had stolen her boyfriend and ruined her trust. Who does that? “What the he

Chapter Eight
“Tina, I would suggest that you go back downstairs right now.” Tim stood up and pointed towards his sneering wife. Eva was astonished by her father's firm and demanding tone of voice. “You need to tell that girl the truth. Her mother was nothing special anyway.” Tina glared at Eva with so much hatred in her eyes that Eva was speechless. Tim watched as his wife walked away slamming the door behind her. Who did she be that she was? Tim was beginning to really regret ever getting with this crazy woman. She had always been jealous of Eva's Mother. Turning back towards his daughter he noted how worried she had become. “It's ok, Eva. She won't hurt you. She's just upset.” Tim said trying his best to reassure her. He knew that Tina would have told Eva the truth if he had not stopped her right there and then. He realised that he could not keep it a secret any longer. He needed to tell his daughter the truth. No more lying. No more secrets. “Eva, lets go for a drive. I think we need

Chapter Nine
The beep of a car horn forced Eva back to reality with a huge thud. “Watch where you're going stupid girl.” The driver shouted angrily out the window as he drive on by. Eva sighed and looked around her. She was in the town centre now. It was not so busy since it was quite late in the early evening now. She wiped her face and pulled her jacket over her more as it was getting slightly colder now. Remembering that she had her phone in the pocket of her jeans and looked at it to see no new notifications. That meant that they were still too busy arguing to notice that she had left. Eva hoped that Millie and Eddie were ok. It could not be very nice for them to have their parents argue and disagree like they were doing. She knew that it would be a strange adjustment for the little ones to have their big sister come to live with them. Spotting a small case across the road, she decided to go on there for a hot drink and to sit so she could calm down and gather her thoughts. Nobody wou

Chapter Ten
Tim was furious when he discovered that Eva had disappeared. “This is all your fault.” he turned on Tina and shouted. She smirked, reapplying her lipstick and feeling satisfied that the girl had gone. She hoped that Eva would not come back anytime soon, or at all if she were that lucky. “Maybe you will remember you have a family now. That bitch was never worthy of you anyway.” Tina spat. Tim could not believe what he was hearing. She was so spiteful. How did he ever agree to marry her! “Daddy, is our sister ok?” Millie tugged at her fathers sleeve and looked up at him with wide eyes. Tim softened at the sight of her. He bent down to pick Millie up. Tina ignored them and walked to the garden with a glass of wine. She disgusted Tim. She was not who he had thought her to be. Not at all. Stroking the hair from his daughter's face, he smiled and nodded. It was hard for him to not get so emotional since he wanted to go out there and find his girl. She could be anywher
