LOGINLuigi’s POV“You contest?” the judge asked. Fear prickled through me. This wasn’t supposed to be happening. The prosecutor was supposed to agree to a bail amount.Stunned, I looked at Stewart. But he looked just as surprised as I was.“What’s happening?” I asked, but he waved his hand at me to silence me. Behind me, I heard Willow gasp.“On what grounds?” Stewart asked, rising to his feet. “Your honor,” the prosecutor said. “We deem Luigi and Logan to be a flight risk.”A flight risk? As in, they thought I was going to jump bail and leave the country? I would never do that. Willow was going to post our bail. If we left the country, then she would be on the hook for the money. Not to mention we had kids here. A life. And I wasn’t a criminal! I had nothing to run from.“How so?” the judge asked, raising his eyebrow.“Luigi has a family estate in Italy,” the prosecutor said, approaching the bench. “Both he and Logan visited there recently. And due to the negative media attention,” she
Luigi’s POV“Let’s go over this one more time,” Stewart said. We were in a small holding room at the courthouse. Somehow, Logan had managed to make it through the past couple of days without another incident. But there was a group of men following his every moment. It was as though they were hovering, just waiting to pounce again.Which was all the more reason to get the hell out of that jail.“The judge will ask you how you plead. You will both say ‘non guilty’. Then the judge will set a bail amount. As long as Willow can post it, you’ll both be brought directly back to the jail and processed for immediate release. Are you both clear on the proceedings?”I nodded. We’d gone over this several times. It was pretty simple.“Logan?” Stewart asked. Logan was staring at his hands in his lap. His breathing was shallow from his beat up ribs. He gave a slight nod.“Okay then good. We’ll be called in soon. It’s a closed hearing, so we won’t have to deal with any reporters or the public. It will
Willow’s POV“Ready?” Adonis asked, opening the car door for me. Nodding, I inhaled a deep breath. I’d never been to a bail hearing before, so I didn’t know what to expect. According to Stewart, it would be short though.Adonis took my arm in his as I stepped out of the car. The moment I did though, I was blinded by the flashing of a camera. The front steps leading up to the courthouse were covered in news reporters. They all had their cameras poised at us.“Oh my god,” I whispered. The last thing I wanted was to work my way through this mess of news reporters. Biting back my anger, Jay appeared on the other side of me.They had a lot of audacity, I thought to myself. Showing up here to profit from Luigi and Logan’s misfortune.“Is every media outlet here?” I asked out loud. “Don’t they have anything better to report on?”“Don’t say anything,” Adonis hissed in my ear. “Remember what Stewart said. Just ignore them.”Stewart had more or less prepared us for the fact that the bail hearing
Willow’s POVStaring at my wardrobe, I couldn’t decide on a dress. What does one wear to a bail hearing? I thought to myself, pushing aside racks of clothes.Luigi and Logan had been in jail for almost a week. Their visitor list still hadn’t been approved, so the only contact I’d had with Luigi had been during his daily phone call. The calls were short though, and every time I hung up, I was on the brink of tears. The lawyer, Stewart, had told me to liquify my assets in preparation for the bail hearing. He said the bail could be very high. I hadn’t even blinked an eye. I withdrew from my mutual funds and other assorted holdings. I didn’t care how much money they needed, I just wanted them back, both of them.Luigi seemed all right during our phone calls. But I knew he was putting on a front. He didn’t want me to worry any more than I was. I could only imagine what they were going through. The whole thing made my stomach twist into a big knot.My mind turned to Sasha. According to the
Luigi’s POVSitting down at the long table in the cafeteria, I looked for Logan. We’d been in jail for three days, with two more to go before our hearing. Mostly, we just stayed in our cells. We were allowed to leave during free time, but we both figured it was safer to just keep to ourselves. There were plenty of very dangerous men in the jail alongside us. These men glared at us when we saw them, black tattoos snaking up their arms, onto their necks and faces. They were menacing, and it was obvious that Logan and I were not one of them.Logan and I sat side by side during all our meals, although calling the food they served us ‘meals’ was a far stretch. It was more like slop. We kept our heads down, literally, not even daring to glance up and look around the room for fear of catching the wrong the eye.But this particular morning, Logan was nowhere to be seen. This was cause for concern, since yesterday, during our free time, Logan and I had ventured outside to the pathetic green spa
Luigi’s POVLogan was staring down at the table. I was looking at the lawyer. The thought of spending a few days in jail was awful, but spending an entire week was almost more than I could bear.“I’ll do my best,” the lawyer said.“I can’t be in here for a week,” Logan said. Glancing down, I saw that his hands were visibly shaking. I knew what he was thinking.Neither Logan nor I were equipped to be in jail. There were men in here, dangerous men. Real criminals. What if we were jumped? What if someone attacked us? I didn’t exactly have experience being in jail, but I wasn’t an idiot. I knew that the men in here were in here for a reason. I’d heard stories of fights erupting in jail, of men turning innocuous things into weapons.I could defend myself, but Logan? He wasn’t a fighter, not really. In fact, he was the opposite. Looking at Logan shaking like a leaf, I realized that he was easy prey. He knew it too. He wouldn’t come right out and admit it, but I could see that he was scared.
