I was lost in thoughts, everything crashing down at once. Rodrigo. Pablo. And Carlos too – the fact that he hadn’t called until now was disturbing.

Sure, he had gone quiet before, but this time felt different. Maybe this was it. I was married, for Pete’s sake. Maybe this was too much to come back from. Maybe I had pushed him to the edge.

“Val, we are here.”

Pablo’s voice snapped me out of it. Since it was almost an hour’s drive, it meant I had been out for that long.

I climbed out and saw Parker and Maggie already standing outside. I hurried to them, reaching for their hands. We headed in without waiting for Pablo, who seemed busy checking his tires.

I didn’t even try to look around. My chest was too heavy. I was uneasy, so I just walked straight to the entrance where Mom was waiting.

“My darling.”

She pulled me into her arms for a hug. It was strange and overwhelming because I wasn’t used to being hugged, not like this. Then she let go and turned to Parker and Maggie.
