Chapter 8

I didn’t answer. I knew that no matter what I said, it would sound weak and meaningless in front of these gossipmongers.

I glanced at my watch. Only ten seconds remained until the agreed time.

I counted silently in my mind.

‘Ten.’

The distant sound of the wolf battalion grew louder, approaching fast.

‘Nine.’

A thick column of smoke rose on the horizon, carrying the smell of burning that stung my nose.

‘Eight.’

Hunter’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, frowning in confusion.

I followed Theo home. As soon as we stepped off the plane, my parents were waiting not far away. The moment my mom saw me, her eyes welled up. I couldn’t hold back either, rushing into her arms with tears streaming down uncontrollably. She stroked my hair gently, her voice trembling with heartache. “My dear daughter, you’ve suffered so much…”Dad, usually so gentle, struck the wall beside him with a fist, leaving a huge crack.“That Hunter… how dare he bully my daughter? I won’t rest until I flatten his pack!”Mom hurriedly placed a hand on his arm. “The child is here. Don’t vent your anger in front of her.”Dad nodded immediately. It hit me then just how many people had worried for me because of my recklessness. The young, headstrong me had long since been shaped and worn by life, but looking back, I realized the ones who truly loved me had always been right behind me.“Dad, Mom, I’m sorry. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have been so reckless.”Dad didn’t scold me, though. He s

Once the investigation started, every filthy, disgusting act Hunter had been hiding came to light.Step by step, he had climbed to the Alpha position on the back of his black-market empire. At that moment, I wanted nothing more than to slap myself for being so blind as to ever fall for such scum.Even with death looming, Hunter wasn’t done. Red-eyed, he glared at me. “If you clear my name, I’ll agree to hold the mating ceremony with you.”Freya lunged at me immediately.“Leia, you’re truly vile! To steal my mate, you’d go this far?”She raised her hand to strike, but I grabbed her wrist firmly.“Freya, at this point, you can’t even save yourself. What right do you have to police others?”Freya froze. “What do you mean?”“Do you think we didn’t investigate thoroughly? All these illegal operations were a joint effort between you and Hunter. That makes you an accomplice.”Her whole body trembled, and she looked at Hunter pitifully. “Hunter, say something! Tell them it was all yo

The ground trembled, throwing up a cloud of dust that blurred everyone’s vision.Hunter’s face went pale. He spun toward Freya. “What’s happening?”Freya stumbled from the shaking floor, clutching his shoulder, stammering, “I don’t know… an earthquake?”Hunter knew it wasn’t an earthquake. His Beta had called to warn him that their border defenses had been breached. A massive

I looked at him coldly. When I said nothing, he took it as guilt and immediately leaned harder into the act.He forced a tear from his eyes and, in front of everyone, spoke in a voice thick with grief. “As you all know, Leia was once my Luna to-be. But she repeatedly had improper relationships with other Alphas. “I tried to stop her many times, yet she refused to change. I cannot allow someone with such a stain to remain in the pack. So I have officially broken off our engagement.“After all, she’s someone I once loved. It pains me to come to this. Leia, for the sake of what we once had, I won’t pursue this any further. But if you keep harassing me, don’t blame me for being merciless.”The moment he finished, the hall erupted.“I can’t believe Alpha went through something so tragic.”“He was deceived by this she-wolf for so long, and still chose not to hold her accountable. Hunter is truly a kind and merciful Alpha.”Once again, Hunter harvested sympathy and praise while pushin

I turned off my phone. My heart sank all the way to the bottom.I knew exactly why he did this. He was afraid that if I joined another pack, I would help another Alpha grow stronger. Also, he wanted to paint himself as the victim in his own pack to win sympathy from the wolves and strengthen his image. That way, his rule would be easier to maintain.Freya looked at me smugly.“Leia, you brought this on yourself. Let’s see who would still dare believe you now.”To me, the two of them were like fleas. They were so busy with their petty tricks that they were unaware they were walking step by step toward hell.I pulled my suitcase and prepared to leave, but Hunter suddenly called out from behind.“Stop. You betrayed me, and you think you can just walk away as if nothing happened?”He was the one who betrayed me first. Yet he shifted all the blame onto me.“What do you want?” I looked warily at him.A trace of cruelty flashed in his eyes. “You betrayed our bond. That’s disresp

I returned to the house I once shared with Hunter, intending to pack my things and leave for good. When I opened the drawer of the vanity, I found the amulet he had given me. The year we fell in love, he had kneeled beneath the statue of the Moon Goddess for three days and three nights to pray for it.He told me it would bless me with a lifetime of happiness and safety.Back then, I had been deeply moved. Now, it only made me feel sick.Without hesitation, I threw it into the fireplace along with every gift he had ever given me, as well as every photo of us over the years. The flames swallowed those memories whole, reducing them to ash and smoke.Once, I had treasured these things beyond measure. Watching them burn felt like the cruelest joke.I took the love letters I had written to him, one by one, and threw them into the fire.Just then, the villa doors pushed open.Freya walked in with a bright smile, her arm looped through Hunter’s. The moment she saw me, her smile froze
