LOGINSome minutes before the break of day, Isis Cepheus slipped into the living room as quietly as she could. But she wasn’t so lucky... a figure was already there, sipping coffee.
Isis froze in her tracks the moment she saw her mum. Her eyes were stern.
“Mu... Mum?” Isis greeted softly. “Have a good night’s rest?”
No response. Isis felt something was off. Her mum, Nora Cepheus, wasn’t the type of woman who would scold her over sleeping out, so what...
Isis was about to take a step closer when Nora finally spoke. “Why did you sleep out? You know I would be worried.”
Dalton’s words from yesterday came back with a fresh sting, making Isis feel disgust for her mother from the bottom of her heart. But she swallowed her anger. I slept out for the first time, so we’re even, she thought before clearing her throat. “Sorry, mum. I slept off at Alice’s place.”
Nora moved closer and scoffed. “Alice’s place? You mean the same Alice that called here to ask if you got back home safely?”
Isis’s eyes widened. She became speechless immediately.
Nora pressed her again. “Did you lose your tongue now that your lie has been exposed?”
“Why didn’t you come to the sports competition? I told you it was my first day in Hale’s class, right?” Isis threw the question back immediately. She thought Nora would just overlook it like she usually did, but since her mother was pressing so hard, Isis couldn’t control her anger anymore.
“Is that the question I asked?” Nora fired back. “I’m asking where you were last night!!”
“I was at a guest house, doing what you were doing at home,” Isis replied curtly. The memory of Dalton and Fatima’s betrayal was still seeping in. All Isis could remember from the guy last night was ‘fish boy’... but never his face, because he had left first.
Nora’s face was edged with worry. “Isis, what on earth are you saying? Is that all you have to say after sleeping out?”
Isis eyed her mum evenly. If only she hadn’t made her prostitution so obvious that even Fatima found out.
“I said I was out doing what you taught me, Mum,” Isis repeated before turning to go to her room. Then she stopped. “I hope your boyfriend has left? You know I hate having males around.”
Nora didn’t move. Her face went pale. “You won’t have to worry about that again, Ice. Go and pack your bags.”
Isis stopped, her shirt already halfway off. “You say what?”
“We’re moving out, Ice! Go and pack your bags!” Nora yelled this time, tears dripping from her eyes as she walked toward her daughter. “Max is marrying me. So we’re moving to his place before the wedding.”
“Mum, are you mad?” Isis freaked out. “You’re even getting married now? Is sleeping around not enough?”
“Isis!!” Nora yelled in anger before hitting her daughter with a sharp slap. “Did you think I’m doing this because I wanted to?”
Isis’s hand traveled to her cheek. Two strings of hot tears ran down her face. As long as she could remember, Nora had never raised a hand against her. It was a total shock... Isis felt like she was losing her damn mind.
“Mum...”
“I will slap you again if you say anything else,” Nora warned, her eyes glowing ferociously. “Your father left me with nothing but debt and your bills to pay. Did you have to judge me, too?”
Isis’s throat instantly dried up. “Mum...”
“I vowed never to tell you all this. I wanted to make sure you were happy, even if I had to sell my dignity for it... and all you could do was blame me, too?” Nora slipped to the ground and sobbed. “You’re my daughter, Ice. You should understand me more than anyone else.”
Isis was at a loss for words. This was the first time Nora had ever mentioned her late father’s debts. All she had been told since she was young was that her father died in a fatal plane crash... she never knew a thing about how he actually lived.
She ran her hand through her hair in frustration and bent down to Nora’s level. “But did you have to get married? Can’t Max just be your boyfriend and...”
“I love him,” Nora confessed. “This is the first time since your father’s death that I’ve actually had feelings for someone. I just couldn’t refuse him when he proposed.”
“So we’re moving to the Vineyard Pack now?”
Nora thought her daughter finally understood and jumped to her feet. She held Isis’s hand expectantly. “No. I told him I can’t leave Ember now because of your education. So he moved here instead with his son. You guys can go to EPC together and...”
Isis yanked her hand away. “His son?” she exclaimed. “You’re not only getting married, but I’m getting a stepbrother now?”
“Ice, you’re going to love it. Just try...”
“No, Mum,” Isis cut in. The thought of what Fatima and Dalton would say if she appeared with a stepbrother out of nowhere haunted her. “You can move out alone. But I won’t leave here only to be stuck with some stepbrother.”
Nora looked defeated at her failure to get through to her daughter. She sat back on the floor. “I can never leave you behind. You’re the reason why I agreed to marry him in the first place.”
“Stop using me as an excuse!” Isis yelled painfully. “If you want to do anything for me, then don’t go on with this marriage!”
Nora stood up. “Fine. If you really want to do this...” She went to the dining room and grabbed a knife. “I would rather die than leave you alone.”
Isis was losing it. Her mind, her heart, her trust... it was all falling apart.
“Get a grip, mum!” she sobbed, trying to reach for the knife. “Think about me, too. What should I tell my friends at school?”
Nora refused to let go. “Max will pay all our bills and I won’t have to sleep with different men again. Isn’t that better?”
“Nothing is fucking better! Get a job! Pick up garbage! Just do anything but this, Mum, please.” Isis had to resort to pleading when she realized she couldn't fight anymore.
The mother and daughter’s argument was cut short by the sound of a van stopping outside.
“The packing van must be here already. Go get your things, honey,” Nora pleaded.
Isis ran upstairs dejectedly. Not to pack her bags, but to cry.
Nothing is going well, her wolf panicked. Isis hugged her teddy and cried bitterly. She’s determined, the wolf said again.
“Arrgh. No!”
Tiara's funeral was held on a gray Saturday in late November. Riley and Samuel attended together, along with Max and Nora. They sat near the back of the small chapel, not wanting to intrude on the grief of Tiara's sister and the few friends who'd stayed in touch over the years. The service was simple and beautiful. Layla, Tiara's younger sister, spoke about the vibrant woman Tiara had been before the accident. About her dreams of becoming a veterinarian, her love of old movies, her terrible singing voice that she used anyway. "My sister lost seven years of her life," Layla said, her voice breaking. "But in the time she had after waking up, she lived fully. She moved to Oregon, went back to school, made new friends. She didn't let what happened to her define her final chapter." Riley found herself crying. For Tiara, for the life cut short, for all the what-ifs and might-have-beens. Samuel held her hand through the entire service. Afterward, Layla approached them as they wer
Riley woke up to her phone exploding.Thirty-seven missed calls. Sixty-two text messages. Her email inbox overflowing with notifications. She grabbed her phone, still half asleep, and opened the first message. It was from Sarah."CALL ME NOW. There's a photo. It's everywhere."Riley's stomach dropped. She opened Twitter. The photo was the top trending topic in Springfield. There she was, wrapped around Samuel in the aquatic center, kissing him like her life depended on it. The caption read: "Springfield Herald reporter Riley Chen caught in compromising position with college swimmer she was assigned to cover. Age gap relationship or abuse of power?"The comments were brutal."This is disgusting. She's almost 30 and he's barely legal.""Classic predator behavior. Using her position as a journalist to get close to a young athlete.""Someone needs to investigate this. This is grooming.""Age gap relationships are valid! Stop being judgmental!""Seven years isn't even that much. My parents
Summer brought unexpected visitors.Riley was working in her home office when the doorbell rang. Luna got there first, always eager to answer the door despite being repeatedly told not to."Someone here!" she announced.Riley opened the door to find a woman in her early forties, well-dressed and vaguely familiar."Can I help you?""Are you Riley Armani? Riley Chen Armani?""Yes. And you are?""My name is Victoria Moore. I'm Tiara's older sister."Riley's stomach dropped. She'd known Tiara had a younger cousin, Aria, who'd warned them about Marcus. But an older sister?"I didn't know Tiara had an older sister.""We were estranged. I left the pack when I was eighteen, moved to Seattle, cut ties with the family. I only found out about Tiara's death two years ago." Victoria's eyes were red-rimmed. "I should have come sooner. But I was angry. At her, at myself, at everything.""Would you like to come in?"Victoria entered, looking around the house with interest. Luna watched her suspicious
Samuel won bronze in his third event, the four hundred meter freestyle. Riley watched him stand on the podium with two gold medals and one bronze around his neck by the end of the Olympics, and thought about how far they'd both come. He'd competed in three Olympic games. Won six medals total. Two silvers, three bronze, and now finally, the gold he'd been chasing his entire career. "I'm done," he said on their last night in Oslo. The kids were asleep in the next room, and they were sitting on the hotel balcony despite the freezing temperature. "After this, I'm retiring." "You're sure?" "I'm twenty-six years old. I've accomplished everything I set out to do. I have a family I love and who actually needs me present." Samuel looked at her. "It's time." Riley nodded. She'd known this was coming, but hearing him say it out loud made it real. "What will you do? After swimming?" "I've had some offers. Coaching positions. Commentary work. One company wants me to be their spokesperson."
The third film premiered in December, timed perfectly for awards season.Riley walked the red carpet in a stunning emerald dress, Samuel beside her in a tuxedo that made her heart skip despite ten years together. The kids were home this time, deemed too young for the chaos of a premiere that would run past midnight."You look beautiful," Samuel murmured as cameras flashed."You look pretty good yourself.""Just good?""Devastating. Happy?""Very."The film was everything Riley had hoped for. The director had stuck the landing, giving the trilogy a satisfying conclusion that honored the books while adding cinematic flair. When the credits rolled, the audience gave a standing ovation. Riley found herself crying, overwhelmed by seeing her story, her characters, her world brought to life so perfectly."You did it," the lead actress told her at the after-party. "Created something that's going to last. People will be watching these films twenty years from now.""That's surreal.""That's leg
Spring brought an unexpected letter.Riley was sorting through mail while Luna "helped" by opening junk catalogs and declaring everything "mine!" when she noticed an official-looking envelope with a university seal.Stanford University. She opened it, confused. She hadn't applied for anything at Stanford.Dear Ms. Armani,We are pleased to invite you to deliver the keynote address at our Graduate School of Journalism's commencement ceremony this May. Your work in both traditional journalism and digital media, combined with your candid writing about personal challenges, has inspired a generation of young journalists. We would be honored to have you share your insights with our graduating class.Riley read it three times.Stanford wanted her to give a commencement speech."Samuel!" she called. He appeared from the garage, covered in grease from working on his truck. "What's wrong?""Nothing's wrong. Stanford wants me to give a commencement speech.""That's amazing!""That's terrifying.
The car was quiet... way too quiet for someone who had just broken a world record. Samuel kept his eyes locked on the road, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. He could still feel the phantom heat of the stadium lights on his skin, but his mind was back in that parking lot.Fatima
The stadium was a total mess. The noise from the crowd was so loud Samuel could feel it in his chest, irritating him madly and the heat from all those people made the air thick. It was nothing like the quiet campus life at Springfield.Backstage, Dalton was having a blast. He was leaning against a
Isis paced the entrance of the Hades palace with her phone in her hand and her eyes trembling with fear. She had been waiting for the outcome of what happened for the past three days, but she heard nothing. She couldn’t take it anymore and decided to message Fatima. “Hey, how is it now? Isn’t today
“This boy was found with drugs!!” a female coach yelled. “You guys are not making things work for us by not banning this boy!”Cameras kept recording, each moment and every word not going uncaptured. This was three days after Samuel’s arrest and the coaches had been in a feud together to see what be
