Some minutes before the break of day, Isis Cepheus slipped into the living room as quietly as she could. But she wasn’t so lucky... a figure was already there, sipping coffee.

Isis froze in her tracks the moment she saw her mum. Her eyes were stern.

“Mu... Mum?” Isis greeted softly. “Have a good night’s rest?”

No response. Isis felt something was off. Her mum, Nora Cepheus, wasn’t the type of woman who would scold her over sleeping out, so what...

Isis was about to take a step closer when Nora finally spoke. “Why did you sleep out? You know I would be worried.”

Dalton’s words from yesterday came back with a fresh sting, making Isis feel disgust for her mother from the bottom of her heart. But she swallowed her anger. I slept out for the first time, so we’re even, she thought before clearing her throat. “Sorry, mum. I slept off at Alice’s place.”

Nora moved closer and scoffed. “Alice’s place? You mean the same Alice that called here to ask if you got back home safely?”

Isis’s eyes widened. She became speechless immediately.

Nora pressed her again. “Did you lose your tongue now that your lie has been exposed?”

“Why didn’t you come to the sports competition? I told you it was my first day in Hale’s class, right?” Isis threw the question back immediately. She thought Nora would just overlook it like she usually did, but since her mother was pressing so hard, Isis couldn’t control her anger anymore.

“Is that the question I asked?” Nora fired back. “I’m asking where you were last night!!”

“I was at a guest house, doing what you were doing at home,” Isis replied curtly. The memory of Dalton and Fatima’s betrayal was still seeping in. All Isis could remember from the guy last night was ‘fish boy’... but never his face, because he had left first.

Nora’s face was edged with worry. “Isis, what on earth are you saying? Is that all you have to say after sleeping out?”

Isis eyed her mum evenly. If only she hadn’t made her prostitution so obvious that even Fatima found out.

“I said I was out doing what you taught me, Mum,” Isis repeated before turning to go to her room. Then she stopped. “I hope your boyfriend has left? You know I hate having males around.”

Nora didn’t move. Her face went pale. “You won’t have to worry about that again, Ice. Go and pack your bags.”

Isis stopped, her shirt already halfway off. “You say what?”

“We’re moving out, Ice! Go and pack your bags!” Nora yelled this time, tears dripping from her eyes as she walked toward her daughter. “Max is marrying me. So we’re moving to his place before the wedding.”

“Mum, are you mad?” Isis freaked out. “You’re even getting married now? Is sleeping around not enough?”

“Isis!!” Nora yelled in anger before hitting her daughter with a sharp slap. “Did you think I’m doing this because I wanted to?”

Isis’s hand traveled to her cheek. Two strings of hot tears ran down her face. As long as she could remember, Nora had never raised a hand against her. It was a total shock... Isis felt like she was losing her damn mind.

“Mum...”

“I will slap you again if you say anything else,” Nora warned, her eyes glowing ferociously. “Your father left me with nothing but debt and your bills to pay. Did you have to judge me, too?”

Isis’s throat instantly dried up. “Mum...”

“I vowed never to tell you all this. I wanted to make sure you were happy, even if I had to sell my dignity for it... and all you could do was blame me, too?” Nora slipped to the ground and sobbed. “You’re my daughter, Ice. You should understand me more than anyone else.”

Isis was at a loss for words. This was the first time Nora had ever mentioned her late father’s debts. All she had been told since she was young was that her father died in a fatal plane crash... she never knew a thing about how he actually lived.

She ran her hand through her hair in frustration and bent down to Nora’s level. “But did you have to get married? Can’t Max just be your boyfriend and...”

“I love him,” Nora confessed. “This is the first time since your father’s death that I’ve actually had feelings for someone. I just couldn’t refuse him when he proposed.”

“So we’re moving to the Vineyard Pack now?”

Nora thought her daughter finally understood and jumped to her feet. She held Isis’s hand expectantly. “No. I told him I can’t leave Ember now because of your education. So he moved here instead with his son. You guys can go to EPC together and...”

Isis yanked her hand away. “His son?” she exclaimed. “You’re not only getting married, but I’m getting a stepbrother now?”

“Ice, you’re going to love it. Just try...”

“No, Mum,” Isis cut in. The thought of what Fatima and Dalton would say if she appeared with a stepbrother out of nowhere haunted her. “You can move out alone. But I won’t leave here only to be stuck with some stepbrother.”

Nora looked defeated at her failure to get through to her daughter. She sat back on the floor. “I can never leave you behind. You’re the reason why I agreed to marry him in the first place.”

“Stop using me as an excuse!” Isis yelled painfully. “If you want to do anything for me, then don’t go on with this marriage!”

Nora stood up. “Fine. If you really want to do this...” She went to the dining room and grabbed a knife. “I would rather die than leave you alone.”

Isis was losing it. Her mind, her heart, her trust... it was all falling apart.

“Get a grip, mum!” she sobbed, trying to reach for the knife. “Think about me, too. What should I tell my friends at school?”

Nora refused to let go. “Max will pay all our bills and I won’t have to sleep with different men again. Isn’t that better?”

“Nothing is fucking better! Get a job! Pick up garbage! Just do anything but this, Mum, please.” Isis had to resort to pleading when she realized she couldn't fight anymore.

The mother and daughter’s argument was cut short by the sound of a van stopping outside.

“The packing van must be here already. Go get your things, honey,” Nora pleaded.

Isis ran upstairs dejectedly. Not to pack her bags, but to cry.

Nothing is going well, her wolf panicked. Isis hugged her teddy and cried bitterly. She’s determined, the wolf said again.

“Arrgh. No!”

  • My Swimmer Stepbrother's Forbidden Claim   Chapter 98

The Olympics came in August, a year after everything had changed.Riley stood in the athlete village in Paris, feeling completely out of place among the world's greatest competitors. She wasn't an athlete. She was a writer, a journalist, a mate who'd somehow gotten credentials to be here supporting Samuel."You look lost," a voice said behind her.Riley turned to find a woman in her fifties, wearing a Team USA jacket. "I am a little. First time at the Olympics.""Family member?""Mate. My partner's competing in swimming."The woman's face lit up. "You must be Riley. Riley Chen. I read your book."Riley was still getting used to this. Being recognized. Being known. "Thank you for reading it.""It's beautiful. Raw. My daughter is in a relationship with someone ten years older, and she was terrified to tell me. After reading your book, she found the courage." The woman held out her hand. "I'm Margaret. My son's competing in track."They talked for a few minutes before Margaret had to lea

  • My Swimmer Stepbrother's Forbidden Claim   Chapter 97

The first draft of the book took four months to write. Four months of late nights and early mornings, of Riley staring at her laptop until her eyes burned, of Samuel reading chapters and offering feedback between training sessions. Four months of reliving every painful, beautiful moment of their story. Riley worked from Samuel's apartment most days. He'd insisted she move in officially two months into the writing process, claiming it was ridiculous for her to pay rent on a place she never stayed at anymore. "Besides," he'd said, pulling her close, "I like waking up with you here." So Riley had given up her apartment, moved her things into Samuel's tiny studio, and learned what it meant to build a life with someone. It wasn't always easy. Samuel's training schedule was brutal, six hours a day in the pool plus strength training and physical therapy. Riley's writing consumed her, whole days disappearing into the manuscript. They had to learn to exist in the same small space without

Two weeks after the article ran, Riley got a call that changed everything. She was in her apartment, working on a business proposal for the online publication Max had suggested, when her phone rang. Unknown number. She almost didn't answer. But something made her pick up."Riley Chen?""Speaking.""My name is Victoria Ashford. I'm a literary agent with Ashford and Associates. I read your article in National Pack Weekly."Riley sat up straighter. "Oh?""I want to represent you. I think your story, yours and Samuel's, would make an incredible book. Memoir, maybe, or creative nonfiction. The kind of thing that could really resonate with people.""A book?""I've already had three publishers reach out asking if you have representation. There's real interest here, Riley. Real money, potentially."Riley's head spun. "I don't know. I've never written a book before.""But you can write. That article proved it. And you have a story people want to hear." Victoria's voice was persuasive, professi

  • My Swimmer Stepbrother's Forbidden Claim   chapter 95: When the article comes out

The article hit stands on Monday morning at six AM.By six-thirty, it was trending on every social media platform. By seven, news outlets were picking it up, dissecting it, offering their own commentary. By eight, Riley's phone had exploded with messages again. But this time, the tone was different."This is beautiful. Real love.""Finally, someone brave enough to tell their truth.""Age gaps in mate bonds are totally normal. People need to educate themselves.""I'm crying. This is the kind of love story we need more of."There were still haters, of course. Still people calling Riley a predator, calling Samuel naive, calling the whole thing inappropriate. But they were drowned out by support. By people sharing their own stories of mate bonds that defied convention. By pack members across the country vouching for the sanctity of goddess-chosen connections.Riley sat at Samuel's kitchen table, scrolling through responses with tears streaming down her face."Hey," Samuel said softly, sit

The interview was scheduled for Monday morning. Riley had reached out to an old colleague, Marcus Chen, no relation, who worked for National Pack Weekly. He'd jumped at the chance to do an exclusive sit-down with her and Samuel about their relationship. "This is huge," Marcus had said over the phone. "Mate bonds, age gaps, institutional pressure. It's got everything. Human interest, legal drama, romance. We'll run it as our cover story." So now Riley and Samuel sat in Samuel's small apartment, waiting for Marcus and his photographer to arrive. Riley had changed outfits three times. Samuel had been calm, steady, but she could see the tension in his shoulders. "You nervous?" she asked. "Terrified," Samuel admitted. "I've done plenty of interviews about swimming. But this? Talking about us? About private things?" "We don't have to do this. We can cancel." "No. You were right. We control the narrative or someone else does." Samuel reached for her hand. "I just hope I don't say som

Riley looked at Samuel. At his face, tight with anger and helplessness. At his hands, clenched in his lap.She thought about the article. About the weeks she'd spent crafting it, the interviews with the entire swim team, the hours of research and writing. It was good work. Important work. Work that deserved to see the light of day.She thought about Samuel. About the mate bond that felt like coming home. About the way he looked at her like she hung the moon. She thought about her career. About the years she'd spent building her reputation, the stories she'd broken, the truth she'd uncovered."I need time to think," she said."You have until end of day," Marcus said. "I'm sorry, Riley. I really am. But this is bigger than any one person."Riley and Samuel left the office in silence. They made it to the parking lot before Riley broke down."I can't do this," she said, tears streaming down her face. "I can't choose.""Then don't." Samuel pulled her close. "We'll figure something else out
