Penelope's pov.

When I finally opened my eyes, the first thing I noticed was the pain in my scalp. It hurt so badly that I couldn’t stop myself from wincing when I tried to move my head. I looked around the room, trying to remember how I had ended up in the hospital again, and then I saw my father sitting beside my bed. He looked exhausted, but the moment he noticed that I was awake, he immediately leaned forward.

“Penelope, you’re awake! How are you feeling? Does your head still hurt?” he aske

Penelope's pov.His expression changed immediately. “Madeleine’s mother? When did this happen, and why would she contact you without informing anyone?”“She sent me a message asking me to meet her at Creek Park. I didn’t know who it was at first, but when I got there, I found her waiting for me. She said I was ruining Madeleine’s future with Sebastian, even though I told her I had nothing to do with their relationship. She didn’t believe me, and she kept accusing me of interfering in their lives.”My father sat forward, his attention fixed entirely on me. “What else did she say? I want you to tell me everything, Penelope. Don’t leave out any details because you think they might upset me.”I hesitated, remembering how Mrs. Bancroft had looked at me when she took out the cheque. Even now, I could still hear the contempt in her voice when she told me that girls like me should know their place. I hated remembering that conversation, and I hated even more that she had made me feel as thoug

Penelope's pov.By the time I returned home from school, I was exhausted. The events of the day had left me irritated, and I didn’t want to think about anything that had happened in the cafeteria. Seeing Sebastian and Madeleine snuggling up to each other had been surprising enough, but watching Madeleine use it as an opportunity to embarrass me in front of everyone had made things worse. I had already told her that I didn’t care about their relationship, and I meant it. If she wanted to cling to Sebastian and show everyone that they were still together, she was free to do so. I had no intention of competing with her for a man I had never asked for in the first place.I dropped my schoolbag in my room and changed out of my uniform before going downstairs. My father wasn’t in the living room, so I assumed he was still busy with his work. I went to the kitchen, got myself something to eat, and sat down at the dining table. I was halfway through my meal when my father walked in. He glance

Penelope's pov.“What?!” Lena’s eyes widened. “She told you that?”I leaned back in my seat. “I can’t believe that she did that either. That’s insane.”“Did you tell anyone about this?”I turned to her with horror. “No. How could I? You’re the only person I’ve told. I can’t bring myself to tell anyone, not even my dad.”To my surprise, an amused expression formed on her face. “Oh, your dad’s gonna be pissed. “You can count on that.” She sighed. “I don’t know why people have to be like this. They don’t want to take accountability for their actions. She should go to meet Sebastian to tell him to leave you alone, but instead, you’re the one she’s asking. That’s insane.”“Right?” I concurred. “I couldn’t believe my ears either when she asked me to do that. And you know the crazy thing was? She offered me money.”Lena jumped in her seat. “You don’t say!”I looked around the cafeteria. “Shh! Sit down. You don’t want anyone to hear this, do you?”She gave an awkward smile to the people who

Penelope's pov.I couldn’t understand why she had asked me to meet her, especially when I had never had any meaningful conversation with her before. I knew who she was, of course, and I was aware of how much influence her family had, but I had no idea what she wanted from me. Nevertheless, she noticed me standing nearby and gestured for me to approach her. I walked towards the bench, feeling increasingly uncomfortable as I wondered what kind of conversation I was about to have.“Penelope, please sit down,” she said, pointing to the space beside her.I sat down cautiously, keeping a little distance between us. “Good afternoon, Mrs. Bancroft. I’m sorry, but I was surprised to receive your message. Is there something you wanted to discuss with me?”She looked me over before opening her handbag and taking out a cheque. “Yes, there is something we need to discuss, and I would appreciate it if you listened carefully instead of pretending you don’t understand the situation. My daughter has b

Penelope’s povI had spent the last few days trying to recover from what happened at school, but it seemed that no matter how much I wanted to forget about it, I couldn’t. The pain in my scalp had gradually reduced, although I still felt uncomfortable whenever I remembered how those girls had surrounded me and pulled my hair. I couldn’t understand why they had decided to take their anger out on me when I had done absolutely nothing to interfere with Sebastian and Madeleine’s relationship. I hadn’t asked Sebastian to reject her, and I certainly hadn’t encouraged him to defend me against her. Yet somehow, I had become the person everyone blamed for their problems, and I was tired of it.When I finally returned to school, I immediately noticed that something had changed. People were gathered in small groups, whispering to one another, and I heard Sebastian and Madeleine’s names several times as I walked down the hallway. At first, I tried to ignore them because I didn’t want to get invol

Does your head still hurt?” he asked, holding my hand.“A little,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. “Dad, what happened? How did I get here?”He stared at me for a moment, as though he was trying to decide how to answer my question. “You were brought here after something happened at school. The doctors said you fainted, and you’ve been unconscious for a while. Can you remember anything about what happened before you lost consciousness?”His question made me remember everything. The accusations, the shouting, and the wa
