Ryan parked in front of Emily’s apartment and sat there for a minute, staring at the steering wheel. His chest felt heavy. The talk with Coach was still echoing in his head, and now this, Emily. He couldn’t avoid her anymore. He needed to fix things, or at least try.

He got out and walked to her door. His knuckles hovered for a second before he finally knocked. Nothing. He knocked again.

After a while, the door opened. Emily stood there, her hair tied up, eyes red like she’d been crying. She didn’t look surprised to see him, just tired.

“What are you doing here?” she asked coldly.

“I needed to talk to you.”

She crossed her arms. “About what? You think there’s something left to say?”

“Please,” he said quietly. “Just hear me out.”

She stared at him for a long second, then stepped aside. “You’ve got five minutes.”

He walked in slowly. The room was dim, just a lamp on. He could feel the awkward silence pressing between them.

Emily stood near the couch, arms still crossed. “So, talk.”
