CALEB
“Since we returned to California, your attitude towards me changed. Yesterday, I didn’t even understand why you looked moody when you returned from the meeting. You refused to have your meal.” Laura stood akimbo throwing words at me. “Do you even think it is easy to cook?” “It is just some personal stuff, you don’t have to be worried,” I replied indifferently. “Can we have some fun together when you return from work?” She asked seductively and I wondered if everything revolves around sex. “Sorry, that won’t be possible. I have a lot to attend to. When I return home, I know I will be exhausted.” I said with a tightened face. “But you always create time for me. Caleb, what has changed? Please talk to me.” She asked with a pitiful tone, trying to make me feel bad. She continued, “Caleb, don’t treat me this way. Don’t you care about my feelings? We are together yet I miss you like we are living in different worlds.” She paused and added, “Hope it is not what I am thinking?” “Keep your thoughts to yourself,” I said coldly. Please, I am not ready for all this. We will talk later.” I waved her off and left for the office. Since Sarah left my life, nothing has brought me joy not even Laura whom I chose over her. Seeing her yesterday only complicated my feelings. However, I wasn’t going to look weak and broken before her. I could barely concentrate when I got to the office. I couldn’t forget my conversation with her. What did Sarah mean by ‘you have no idea of what I have become since you betrayed me. Was I a terrible husband? She knew how long we had come. I didn’t know what prompted me to ask for a divorce. I understand that she is shattered and heartbroken but I am in a worse situation. A dialogue could have saved the marriage. Nevertheless, I admire her courage and outspokenness. The Sarah I knew would never talk back at me or look me right in the eyes when talking. Indeed, a lot has changed about her! My mind drifted to my door which slowly creaked open. I knew that only Silas could enter my office without knocking. “Caleb, what is wrong? You ignored my greeting earlier.” Silas uttered with concern visible in his voice as he walked into my office. “You look unhappy.” He added, “Is something bothering you? Talk me, brother.” “I can’t even explain but I feel sick,” I said, hitting my fingers against the table. “Let’s visit the hospital now.” “Visiting the hospital is not the solution to my sickness.” I let out a low sigh. Lowering my voice, I muttered. “I saw her yesterday.” “Who?” He asked with widened eyes. “Sarah!” “Hmm, this is the best time to tell you my mind, man. You were away from the country and we didn’t talk about this. Yet, you pretended like nothing happened. What made you feel Laura was better?” With each of his words, guilt ran through my veins. Silas wasn’t just my business partner but my best friend. We’ve come a long way and I’m not amazed that he could point out my flaws to me. How do I make him understand that Laura was my mistake and I’ll choose Sarah over and over again? How do I admit that I regret my actions towards her? How do I admit that I want to have her back? How do I sort it out? I couldn’t admit it to him at least not yet. “Forget it, Silas. It is nothing serious.” I lied but he didn’t buy my words. “Admit your mistakes, you have been a shadow of yourself since the divorce. You should discuss it with her, she should have a soft spot for you but I know a lot must have changed.” Silas explained and I placed my head on my table. After some seconds, I raised my head and glanced at him. Was it until I screamed before he would understand that I wasn’t ready for this? “I need some time to think.” I rubbed my temples. “Think about what? How she hope for you to return that night to celebrate your birthday with you? How she went out of her comfort zone to organize a surprise party for you. In the end, it was just a waste.” “Just let it slide, please,” I begged. “If I have the opportunity to have someone like her or even her, just know I will grab her with my full arms and love. I won’t her off my reach” Silas replied and winked. I stood up abruptly. “Don’t you dare! If you try that, I won’t mind chopping your fingers off. I would have harmed you before remembering we are friends. Sarah is mine, she belongs to me and she will remain mine forever.” “Finally, you have admitted.” He smiled. He pushed me to my limit to make his point clear and he was successful. “When will our goods arrive, we need them for production next week. How is the new branch thriving? Any feedback from the manager?” I quickly diverted the discussion. Silas cleared his throat, “Everything is going well so far. No cause for alarm.” ‘There is a huge cause for alarm, I hope my personal life does not affect my business and career.’ I thought. He added. “Any plan for tonight?” “No!” I replied indifferently, glancing at him. “Okay! There is this event that has been the talk of the town, it is within the fashion industry, ST Atelier. I know you are a lover of the latest designs. You could even get some collections for me, what are friends for? He laughed and continued. “Let’s feed our eyes tonight.” “But…” I was unable to talk as he interrupted me. “I won’t take no for an answer.” He said as he left my office. I just returned to the country, hanging out with Silas and driving around the area isn’t a bad idea. It is far better than returning to Laura who is always nagging. I don’t know why but I felt the night holds something unusual.“They will be safe. I will go after the gangster and put him where he belongs. Laura will only find out when I have exposed her. I won’t put up any act that will make her suspect.” I pouted.“We have to be careful. We also have to strategize perfectly to be victorious in this battle.” Silas whispered.I finished up the work I had on my desk while Silas listened to music.“Let's go to your house.” I said and he stared at me.He must have been surprised that we were leaving the office earlier than usual.I had to draw out a plan for this mission and his house was the best place for it.We arrived at Silas' residence.“Do you care for a drink?” Silas asked the moment I sat on the couch.“Water is perfect.” I replied.I pulled out a pen and a piece of paper from my bag.I wrote down all the information about the gangster. The only cause for alarm was that even the database didn't reveal the name of the person. That isn't something to worry about. With the phone number, we can find the per
CALEB Silas briefed me about some latest developments including a zoom meeting with Sarah.I happily joined the meeting when it was time. After the meeting, I left the office without informing anyone.I decided to have a drink because I couldn't get Sarah off my mind. I want to give my heart what it desires by doing all it takes to send Laura out of my life.As I walked into a bar, I met Stanley.“Hey man, come and join me.” He said to me and I happily sat beside him.The waiter walked up to me and took my order.Almost immediately, the waiter returned and Stanley insisted that he was going to pay for my drink.I was about to take a sip when my phone rang. It was a call from Silas. Can't Silas know when I want to be alone? “Why are you calling me?” I complained but Silas wasn't moved by it.“How dare you leave the office without informing me?” He queried.Do I have to remind him that I was his boss?I cleared my throat. “Stop missing me. I don't have to inform you about my movemen
SARAH “We can go now. He must be worried that you haven’t come to pick him. It has stopped raining.” Josh said to me.We were working on a project together so I decided we should stop by the house to pick an important document before going to pick Nelly from school. Lo, it started raining. We had no choice than to wait till after the rain cox, I believed Nelly was safe.Immediately I opened the door, I was shocked to see Caleb carrying Nelly in his arms. I was at a loss for words. “Caleb and Nelly?” I heard Josh whisper.I threw a lot of questions at Caleb and he explained how he came across Nelly. Seeing them together only left me worried.I forcefully pulled Nelly from Caleb’s arms and asked him to leave. He was adamant but Josh also seconded my words.Holding Nelly, I returned into the house with Josh following closely.Nelly had a happy expression and the only person behind it was Caleb. I instructed him to run to his room while I paced restlessly in the sitting room.I was not
CALEB“Uncle, who was that man? Is he Nelly’s father? That woman is his mother, I have seen her several times at school” She said but I cleared my throat and started the car.“He is not Nelly’s father. Keep quiet.” I muttered. She looked at me via the rear mirror but I ignored her. I knew my words had nothing on her, she was still going to talk.“Why are you angry? It is just a question that needs a simple response.” Elena spoke confidently in the car.“If there is anything going on, why don’t you share it with me. A problem shared is half solved.” He muttered and I had to glance at her face. This girl was too wise for her age, she was just six for crying out loud!“There is no problem.” I managed to say. She touched my shoulder and said.“I feel there is a connection between you and Nelly that I can’t explain. I don’t believe that you don’t have a problem.” He went on and guilt of lying filled my mind.“Let me be, Elena. I have a lot on my mind, forget about this topic. She shrugged
CALEBI smiled as Nelly ran to embrace me. I saw the confusion in Elena’s gaze, she must be wondering how we knew each other.Elena approached us and she gazed at me before saying.“How did you know Nelly? And Nelly, how did you know my uncle?” She asked.“You mean he is your uncle! He is my friend.” Nelly smiled.“Elena is my niece. Nelly and I are best of friends. It’s so fortunate that you are also his friend, Elena.” I chuckled.Elena went on to explain that her and Nelly were classmates and once had a misunderstanding because of a crayon before they finally become friends.“That’s good.” She mumbled.“Who is coming to pick you?” I asked Nelly.“It should be Mom or Aunt Olivia.” He said and the thought of waiting for anyone who comes to pick him so that I can apologize for Laura’s ill behavior crossed my mind.“We can all stay together till any of them comes around.” I said.“That is a good idea, let’s get the ice-cream.” Elena said happily. I stood in the middle and held their
CALEB The next day, I woke up a bit late. After freshening up, I went downstairs and I was greeted by Laura who was arranging the table for breakfast.“Breakfast is ready.” She said softly. If I was to judge by her voice, I would have called her an angel but by character, she is far from that.I ignored her swollen eyes which were evidence that she had been crying.“Silas is around. Will he get food to eat?” I said and she nodded.“Yes, there's enough food that can go round.” She replied and I called him, notifying him that breakfast was ready.Soon, Silas joined us at the dining table. While I had eaten half my food, Silas was done eating.“I have to leave now so that I can change my clothes. Don't be late. I will see you at the office.” Silas uttered and left.“Can we talk about last night?” She began. How I wish she knew how much hatred I have for her because of her evil act. Can't she read one's mind? Bringing the topic up again was like adding gasoline to a fire.“No. I don't w
