My marital journey has been a shadow of what I had envisioned. With hopes that my marriage could be better, I decided to give my husband a special treat. It was his birthday, I organized a surprise party for him and also planned to break the news of my pregnancy to him. The spark of our love died with each passing day after our wedding ceremony. However, I want to rekindle the spark today, been a special day for him. “It is late. Why is he not back?” Debby asked, making me look at my wristwatch. “I have no idea.” I sighed, gesturing for her to sit beside me in the dining room. “Let me give him a call.” She said, without wasting much time, she picked up her phone. “Debby, don’t call him. The beauty of the surprise party would be ruined.” Debby was my husband's younger sister – in fact only sibling and she scolds him whenever he is wrong. Sometimes, I felt she was disrespecting him but then, he accepted his wrong. I guess it was out of the love they had for each other as a brother and sister. I had invited her over as a surprise too to her brother. “What do you mean? He usually returns home before this time.” With a furrowed brow, she pointed at the wall clock. “Could it be something is wrong? If he returns when we have fallen asleep, then the aim of the surprise has been defeated.” “Let’s exercise patience,” I assured her but my thought whispered to me that there was sense in Debby’s words. I don’t want her to call him. The shock and joy on his face when he sees the cakes, wines, and different dishes on the table and the people present would mean a lot to him thereby igniting the hope of a happy home. “Now I see why you both are yet to have a child or say, children. He is always busy with work even when you both should be making babies. You both have been married for five good years. There is a lot I should talk to my brother about.” I smiled, her words made me shy but she had a point. All she said was valid, she was in her late twenties, and I admired her sense of reasoning and understanding. “If you are tired, please have your rest. The moment I hear the sound of his car…” I paused and looked at her. “I will reach out to you before getting the door.” Her expression showed that she wasn’t in agreement with my suggestion. Could it be that Caleb, my dear husband didn’t find me worthy to celebrate his birthday with? At this point, I recalled his last birthday, he returned from work very early but after two hours, he left the house. I didn’t even know when he returned home the next day. Will history repeat itself today? “Finally, Caleb is back,” I said, after hearing a car horn. Wearing a bright smile, I couldn’t explain why I felt so elated. Maybe because thoughts of him not coming home tonight were rendered invalid. “Everything is in place,” Debby uttered as she switched off the lights. “I’ll answer the door,” I said. I stood and quickly went to open the door. I have to make things work at least for the sake of my unborn child. As I entered the sitting room, I gazed at Caleb’s picture which was framed and hanging on the wall before opening the door. To my surprise, I found Silas at the door and not my husband. Silas was my husband's best friend and business partner. He should know why Caleb is not home yet. “Hi Silas,” I greeted warmly. “Hello Sarah, sorry I arrived late. Is the party over?” “Over?” I asked, not able to hide my confusion. I gestured for him to come in and I locked the door. “Yeah, I had to finish some official assignments. On the invitation card you sent to me, the party was stated to start by 8:00 PM.” “Alright, but…” I was unable to complete my statement because he interrupted me. “Where is he? Is he enjoying himself and pretending not to hear my voice?” He asked jokingly. “Your friend is not back. I have been anticipating his arrival.” I said trying to hide my pain with a fake smile. “You guys are always together. You should know his whereabouts.” “Come off it,” Silas glanced at his phone. “It is past nine and your husband left his office around 5:00 PM, making it known that he was closing early so he could have fun since today is his birthday. I heaved. “Where could he be then?” “I promise, I have no idea.” “Silas, come with me. You can have a drink before he arrives.” I suggested, but I could feel tears welling in my eyes. He nodded and followed after me. I put on the lights. Upon seeing Debby, he was surprised. He and Caleb had been friends from childhood so there was no how Silas wouldn’t know Debby. “Look who we have here,” Silas said happily as he took the seat opposite Debby. “Good to see you, Silas,” Debby replied with a bright smile. “However, your friend is not yet back home. Is there something you would like us to know?” “Nothing, my dear. We deserve an explanation from him when he returns.” Silas wore a serious look. “Alright…,” Debby said reluctantly. I sat beside Debby. They chatted about their memories when they were much younger, filling the air with laughter and happiness. I leaned on the chair and closed my eyes. My childhood memories also flashed through my mind. I recall how Caleb got me gifts and spent time with me and I returned the gesture. Throughout my college days, he was jealous whenever I received gifts from other male friends. But after marriage, everything changed. I would have said he was pretending to love me genuinely before marriage for reason best known to him, but I can’t bring myself to accept that. Two hours after Silas’ arrival, Caleb had still not returned home. All I spent to make his birthday memorable turned out to be a waste. “I have to go now, it is late,” Silas said with a low tone. “Take care of yourself.” My feet were too heavy to move because of how embarrassed I felt. In response to him, I gave a nod and waved at him. Debby yawned. “I have to go to bed.” I faked a smile. I felt forsaken. How could the man I love? The man I exchanged marital vows with stayed out this late without bothering to call me to say why. He has not been the best husband to me but I did not expect him to treat me with such disrespect. I placed my head on the table, and with so many things racing in my mind, I eventually dozed off. The blaring sound of the doorbell disrupted my moment of peace. I hissed and refused to get the door. Debby came downstairs and she greeted me with a smile. She threw glances as though she was asking if I spent the night in the dining room. She must have read my mind and decided to get the door. “Sarah, someone is here to see you.” Debby’s voice drew my attention. After minutes of patting my face and wondering who came to see me at seven in the morning, I went to the sitting room.CALEBI got into my office and there was a lot to attend to on my desk. While I was battling with taking Sarah off my mind and which document to work on first, two men walked. It was Uriel and Silas. I was surprised to see Uriel, he had travel out for a course. With a bright smile, I said. “Hi, Uriel. Good to see you, have your seat.” I pointed to the seat in the opposite direction.“Yeah, man.” Uriel replied and sat down.Silas looked at me and shook his head.“Don't I deserve to have a seat too? I need to travel out too so you can miss me.” He tightened his face.“The last time I checked, you have your seat in my office before I even ask you too. You can stand for all I care.” I laughed.“Really! 1-0, you are winning. Expect my revenge.” Silas muttered and sat down.“What do you care for, Uriel?”I asked with a smile.“Nothing,” He mumbled.“That can't be. Allow Caleb spend money, he has enough. We'll all go out to have lunch, bills on Caleb.” Silas uttered as he ignored my gaze.I s
CALEB“Give me Sarah’s phone number.” Laura requested humbly and I couldn’t help but widen my eyes.I expected that it would take a while before she made the moves of settling her scores with Sarah but she was working towards it so fast. That must be because she doesn’t want to lose me but she will know better at the end of it all.“Alright,” I said and called the number out from my phone. With a bright smile, I returned to my room and got dressed for the day’s activities. I had a business seminar to attend. The ambiance of the venue was captivating and pleasant to the mind. I exchanged greetings with some familiar faces. The seminar started and soon the first phase ended. At that point, the lady who anchored the program announced.“Sarah Tonks will be our resource person for the next phase, she would be here anytime soon.” I was surprised and elated when I heard her name but what was more shocking was that she hadn’t arrived and all those present agreed to patiently wait.I was prou
CALEB I left Sarah's place angry yesterday. However, I am at fault for everything. If I had treated her better, Josh wouldn't have held a special place in her heart.I was happy when I received a call from Sarah but soon my expression turned cold after she told me Laura visited her house and Josh's house to threaten them. This explains why I didn't see Laura at home when I woke up.What sort of a childish act is this?! Can't she use that time and energy to build her career instead of going about threatening people because of a man.“Hi darling,” Laura uttered the moment she walked into the house. She looked so innocent but I wasn't going to fall for that.“Where are you coming from?” I asked coldly.“I went out to attend to something urgent.” She replied with a serious look.“Urgent indeed!” I yelled as I stamped my foot on the floor.“Is anything the problem?” She asked with fear evident in her tone.“Why did you visit Sarah and Josh? What prompted you to do that?” I asked, ensuring
SARAHI returned to the event venue with confused emotion.A part of my mind was worried about Josh while the other part was worried about Caleb. There was no room for me to even be worried about myself.I never invited Caleb for my event but on the other hand, I wished I could get hold of the person who went live at the venue and showed the whole world all that happened.I found it difficult to process Caleb’s last words before he left. “The divorce papers you signed weren't signed by me because I was away, so it wasn't filed. Meaning it was just a mere write up in black and white. Anyone who thinks you are my ex must be joking!”I assumed he just said it out of jealousy because of the way I was worried about Josh’s feelings. I didn’t believe his words.Soon the event ended. I sent Josh messages and called him severally but he didn’t respond to any. I felt bad that Josh who had been helping all these years is mad at me for a reason that I saw as nothing.I can’t let Caleb’s interfere
SARAHI couldn't believe Caleb went this far to punish Amelia for saying those words to me.I noticed the remorse on Amelia's face when she received a call confirming the order Caleb had passed concerning making her family go bankrupt. He fought on my behalf, he defended me. He couldn't bare to see anyone insult and humiliate me.I felt cherished and protected. I watched Amelia Klein climb up the stage, pick the microphone and apologized.“I am sorry, Sarah. All I said earlier were lies and just to pull attention to myself. Please don't ruin my family. I promise to filter my words and think deeply before spilling gibberish.” Amelia fell on her knees, with tears gushing out of her eyes. The guests present couldn't help but marvel at this. The proud and popular Amelia Klein was kneeling in public and seeking forgiveness from Sarah.I remained indifferent, Amelia was seeking forgiveness because she doesn't want her family to be ruined.“I don't need your apologies. Your words didn't get
SARAHHis eyes beamed with great delight. His gaze made me slightly uncomfortable as I smiled and looked at him. We haven’t been in touch for some days and I don’t remember telling him about my NGO.Could it be he has been tracking all my moves?Echoes of whispers filled the air. Quite a number of those present knew that I was once married to Caleb Haley. I am more surprised to see him than they are.All of a sudden, Amelia Klein, one of my classmate at college stood up, drawing the attention of everyone. Amelia was one of the big girls in school back then, all thanks to the wealth of her parent. She bullied and humiliated me always. I never knew she was around, maybe her aim was to see how awful the meeting will end. Thank God she was disappointed. She approached Caleb and smelled the flower he was holding. That act made Caleb tighten his face as he glanced at her with disgust.“Look who we have in our midst, the CEO of Haley corporation. He must be here because of his girlfriend, La
SARAHIt's been months of trying to set up my NGO which brings divorced and single ladies together.A lot of invitations and reminders have been sent to a lot of people and they cannot wait to attend the first meeting. There was a small space in my backyard so I used it to set up a venue. The event planner and interior designers did a fantastic job.I ensured small chops, juices and sweets will be available during the meeting.Everything was now in place and Aunt Olivia raised the point that the organisation should have a name.I've tried coming up with a beautiful name but I couldn't. After some minutes of silence, Aunt Olivia mentioned, forever young. The name of my NGO is, ‘Forever young.’“This is perfect. With this name, the women who will be members of this organization will know that they have their youthful strength always to achieve their dreams without age or their bitter experience being a barrier.” I said with a bright smile.Aunt Olivia has given me the support that I nee
LAURAMy discussion with Silas confirmed all my doubts to be true. He couldn't open up that Caleb was on the mission to win his ex-wife back.I was aware that Caleb and Sarah worked on Mr. Michael's project but decided to remain calm.Caleb's finance was also important to me.To destroy Sarah's effort, I employed the service of some goons to destroy all the fabrics she was supposed to deliver.I was delighted when they informed me that they carried out the tasks successfully leaving no traces.I threatened her via various means but she remained undaunted. She was more strong hearted than before. She can't have my man, she lost him to me already and can't have him back. I will do all it takes. I must do all it takes. To avoid Caleb from suspecting which would further abort my plans, I had to remain calm. I pretended like I was not threatened by Sarah's presence since we returned to California. The wings she thinks she now possess to soar high will I destroy without a rethink.I noticed
SILASI enjoyed every part of Mr. Michael’s event. However, I had lost track of where Caleb was. I knew we would meet again when the event was over.I exchanged pleasantries with some familiar faces and the event soon ended. I returned to the car to wait for Caleb but I couldn't have a glimpse of him.I wondered what he was up to. I recalled earlier that he quietly followed Sarah into the hall. I assumed he was trying to win his ex-wife back.I called Caleb's number, it rang but he didn't pick. Thank goodness I have the car keys, otherwise I would have waited till Caleb picked the call.As I was about to open the door of the car, I heard a familiar voice.“Hey, Silas. Where is Caleb? I have searched all over but I can't find him.”I turned to the direction the voice came and lo, I saw Laura. She approached me looking tired and sweating profusely. She was beautiful but not as Sarah, she wasn't my spec.“Shit,” I cursed before she got to me. This woman is just full of surprises. I scoff
