LOGINEVA'S POV
In my entire life, I have never seen my mom gone all out for anyone the way she was doing for Rachel. She hired some cleaners to clean the house, she changed a few things, bought drinks and food items in just one day. As soon as she asked Rachel to invite her fiance over, preparations started immediately for his arrival the next day and as usual, I wasn't exempted as my mom asked me to change the curtains in the living room. I didn't understand why she was going all out for just a casual visit and it wasn't even to start making preparations for the wedding. “Eva, make sure you fix that in the right way and don't get distracted.”my mother said as she walked away. I sighed deeply as I continued doing what I was doing. “Mom!!! He is going to be here as early as 9 tomorrow!!!” My sister yelled. “Oh shit!!! We haven't gotten everything done!!! Eva!!!!???” She called. “Yes, mother??” “Hurry up and fix those….I have another job for you.” “But what about the bride to be??” I asked teasingly. I noticed Rachel had done nothing for hours except walk around and look pretty. “No dear…I don't want her to stress herself before tomorrow so her fiance won't change his mind.” She said smiling. “Really mom??? Really??” I was starting to believe that I was adopted. “Just do it for your sister okay…once she gets married and moves to her husband's house, she'll be out of your head.” After doing all the heinous chores my mother asked me to do, I was exhausted as I laid on the bed. I felt aches all over my body and that added to my frustration too as I didn't eat anything and decided to sleep with an empty stomach. The following day as early as 6:30AM, my sister woke me up. “Eva!!!wake up!! Have you forgotten what day it is??” She asked. I yawned and checked the time. “Rachel it's still so early please let me sleep…besides it's not your wedding day.” I said. “Fine!!! Suit yourself.” She said as she walked out of my room in anger. The craziest part of this was that I was not even the tiniest bit curious about the man she was bringing home because I just wanted this to go away as much as it could. I got up soon after as I couldn't go back to sleep and freshened up. My Mother was already in the kitchen and so I joined her. “Eva, please I beg of you…be of good behavior today and don't drive away our guest with your silly remarks.” “Mom?? Am I a child???” “Am just saying Eva.” “Just a few more hours Eva.” I whispered to myself. It was already 2pm and Rachel's fiance was nowhere to be seen. She had already cried twice ruining her makeup and as for me, I had already eaten twice. I felt bad for her but that didn't mean I should ignore my empty belly. She called him repeatedly but it was going straight to voicemail. “Mom, did I do something wrong?? Am I cursed??” She asked in tears. “No sweetie…maybe something just came up.” “Something came up and he couldn't inform me about it??” “Yeah…or maybe something bad happened.” I said. “I know you are the cause of this Eva!!!!”Rachel said. “Me??? What did I do?” I asked in confusion. “You have used your bad luck to jinx me.” “Mom, can you hear her??” I asked. “Just leave your sister alone Eva.” “No mom!!! First of all I am her older sister and she should accord me some respect and second, haven't I worked my ass off since yesterday just to make sure things go smoothly??? And then she has the temerity to say I jinxed her with my bad luck??” “Calm down Eva…this is not the time at all to do this with your sister..she is hurt and heartbroken.” “I feel bad about that…I really do but that doesn't give her the right to say whatever she pleases.” “Eva I said it's enough!!” “Mom, what if he cancels the engagement?? What am I going to do??” Rachel asked. “Then you will find someone better dear.” “No mom…I don't want any other person but Clark!! He is the perfect man for me.” “There are no perfect men Eva.” My mom said. “No mom you don't understand…he is perfect….he is nice, kind, loves me and rich…. everything I want in a man.” “There are other eligible bachelors out there with these qualities sweetie…he isn't the only man in the world.” My mom really didn't care if Rachel's fiance died because all she wants is for her kids to get married by all means and get out of her head. She has been planning our wedding ever since we were born and it is her lifelong dream to bring it to actualization. “Let me try to call him again.” Rachel said as she dialed his number but it went straight to voicemail again. “I think you should stop calling him now honey…i'm not sure he is going to come anymore.” “But mom, he promised!!! I spoke to him yesterday and he promised he was going to be here.” Rachel said as she burst into tears again for the 100th time. “Rachel honey you need to stop crying now or you are going to end up falling sick….I told you before that you will find someone better than him okay??” “I don't want any other man…I want only him!!!” She said as she got up and ran into her room. My mom gave me a go after her look. “No mom…she's all yours.” I said. She sighed deeply, got up and followed Rachel into the room. I was hungry again and decided to get the third plate of food mainly because it tasted so good. After eating, I switched on the TV in the living room and watched a series I've been following up on. I continued watching for hours and when I checked the time, it was already 6pm. Mom came out of her own room and was looking so exhausted. “How is Rachel??” “She's asleep…she'll be fine.” She said as she walked into the kitchen. Suddenly I heard the doorbell ring and I wondered who it was because it was late. I got up and opened the door and saw the cutest man I had ever seen. I almost started drooling as I looked at him from head to toe and automatically blushed. “Good evening…is this Rachel's house??” he asked with his deep toned voice. “Yes, who are you??” I asked as I stared deeply at him without breaking eye contact. “I am Clark….her fiance.”EVA'S POV “What test?” I asked, my voice coming out sharper than I intended. My mother didn’t answer immediately. She simply sat there with that mysterious little smile still playing on her lips, leaving all of us staring at her in silence. The tension in the room was so thick it felt like we were breathing through cotton.Rachel was the first to break it. She wiped her tear-streaked face with the back of her hand as the mascara smudged under her eyes. “Mom, what are you talking about? You can’t just say something like that and then smile like it’s funny!”Mother leaned forward slightly, her expression turning serious again. “I needed to know Clark’s true intentions, Rachel…You’ve been coming to me for weeks, crying about how distant he’s been, how he ignores your calls, how the wedding feels one-sided…I wanted to see if he would take the easy exit when it was offered to him on a silver platter….He didn’t…He chose to stay committed, even when it would have been simpler to walk a
EVA’S POV I sat frozen on the edge of the couch, the weight of my mother’s words still hanging heavy in the air like smoke after a gunshot.“Call off the wedding, Clark,” she had said calmly, as if she were asking him to pass the salt.Rachel’s head snapped toward her so fast I thought she might get whiplash. “What did you just say?” she bit out as her voice was sharp enough to cut glass. My mother didn't flinch. She leaned back in her favorite armchair, folding her arms across her chest with that quiet authority only she could wield. “It seems this engagement of yours is nothing but a business transaction, Rachel. …One minute you’re crying to me that Clark has been ignoring you, the next minute you manage to reach him and the only thing you can think to do is ask him for money…when he doesn’t give it, you come running back here complaining that he doesn’t care about you.” She shook her head slowly. “I don’t understand this relationship anymore and if I don’t understand it, it’s
CLARK'S POVThe silence in my bedroom felt heavier after Rachel’s mother called than when Rachel left. Something was very wrong, and the urgent call from her mother only confirmed it.I stood up, ran a hand through my hair, and quickly freshened up in the bathroom splashing cold water on my face, straightening my shirt, and trying to shake off the lingering uneasiness.Whatever was waiting for me at their mother’s house, I needed to face it with a clear head.Grabbing my keys, I headed out the door and got into my car. The moment I pulled out of the driveway, I dialed Eva’s number. She didn't pick up on the first ring but she did on the second ring.“Clark? Is everything okay?”“Not really,” I said, keeping my voice steady as I merged onto the main road. “Rachel showed up at my house uninvited ….I got angry and yelled at her and told her she can’t just walk in whenever she wants…She burst into tears, which threw me off then I took her upstairs to calm her down…She complained about
CLARK’S POV Eva’s hands were trembling as she held her phone, the screen glowing with Daniel’s latest message. Her breathing had turned shallow and fast, the kind of panic that made her chest rise and fall too quickly. I watched her eyes move across the words again and again, as if rereading them would somehow change their meaning.“He’s not taking the money anymore,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “He says I have to publicly announce our involvement..you and me…by tomorrow night, or he’ll release everything…the photos, the videos, all of it. Clark, what are we going to do?”Her panic was off the roof now.I could see it in the way her free hand clutched the edge of my desk like it was the only thing keeping her grounded. This wasn’t just fear for herself anymore. It was the terror of watching our carefully hidden world explode in public, dragging her family, my family, and the upcoming wedding into the wreckage.I stood up slowly, walked around the desk, and gently took the
RACHEL'S POVThe threat landed like a punch to my gut.Daniel’s smirk was still hanging in the air between us as the martini glass trembled in my hand as I stared at him, fury and fear twisting together in my chest.“I have nothing to lose,” I hissed, trying to sound stronger than I felt. “You think you can blackmail me? Go ahead and tell Eva…tell Mom and see if I care.”Daniel laughed so loudly…that kind of laugh that almost made me hit a glass on his head.He leaned in closer, his breath carrying the faint smell of whiskey.“Between the two of us, princess, I’m the one with nothing to lose…I’m already running for my life…A little more chaos won’t change shit for me.” he said as he shifted closer, his face barely inches from mine. “But you? Can you really bear the thought of your darling fiancé Clark leaving you? Walking away the week before your perfect wedding? Imagine the humiliation…the whispers…your mother’s disappointment…Eva looking at you with pity… or worse, satisfaction.”
RACHEL'S POVIt's been two whole days of trying to reach out to Clark but to no avail.I call him and he doesn't pick up my calls…I text him and he ignores my text messages even after he sees it.I have gone to his office twice and whenever I go, his stupid secretary would always tell him he was out of sit and my frustration is so high right now.The wedding was in less than a week, and Clark has been treating me like I was invisible….like I was some annoying obligation instead of his future wife. There was no way in hell I was going to let him treat me like trash…the wedding is going to hold whether he fucking likes it or not.I stormed into Mom’s house without knocking. “Mom!” I called out, voice already shaking with frustration.Mom appeared from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dish towel as concern was written all over her face. “Rachel? Sweetheart, what’s wrong? You look like you’re about murder someone…what's the matter??”I dropped my bag on the couch and collapsed beside
EVA'S POV I didn’t scream.I didn’t gasp.I didn’t even step forward.I just stood there frozen while my entire world cracked open silently. My heart sank before my brain could process what was happening.I leaned forward just a little, barely daring to breathe, and that was when I saw them.Danie
EVA'S POV The silence after Rachel’s gasp was louder than any scream. She stood by the doorway, eyes moving slowly from Clark to me, then to the couch, then back to me again. Her lips trembled, but her face hardened almost immediately.“So this is it,” she said, her voice dangerously calm. “This
EVA'S POV My hands were shaking as I tried to pull Clark up.“Clark, please,” I whispered, panic clawing at my chest. “Stay awake.”I panicked because at that moment, I had no idea what was going on with him.His eyelids fluttered and his body was heavy against mine. For a terrifying second, I t
EVA'S POV I knew something was wrong the moment I stepped into the living room.Rachel froze when she saw me and Daniel did too. They were standing too close. Not touching but close enough that the air between them felt wrong. It felt like a conversation had been cut short and like I had walked
