“The gentleman paid for it and asked me to give it to you.” she said. I looked at her in confusion as I had no idea what was going on. “Me?? Clark asked you to give this to me??” I asked. “Yes.” she said smiling. “Are you sure?? I am not his fiance.” I said. “I know…I think he saw you when you were admiring the ring and so he paid for it along with his and his Fiance’s.” she said. “Emmm….I really don’t know what to say….thank you.” “You should be thanking him.” she said as she winked. As much as I was happy about the gift, I was confused as well because he was the same person who was completely ignoring me and suddenly he pays for a ring that costs almost a million dollars. I kept the ring in my purse and walked out to meet with them. “What happened??” Rachel asked. “Well…” “I am sure she forgot something over there?? Right sister in law??” Clark asked as he interrupted me. “Right.” I said. “Are you sure Eva???” Rachel asked. “Yes sister….I forgot something.” I said. “Hmm…it seems someone believes the words of her sister to her soon to be husband.” “Not at all baby.” Rachel said as she hugged Clark. Clark in turn wrapped his hands around her waist and drew her closer to himself. “Hey…we are in public.” Rachel said as she giggled. “Are you scared of my public display of affection??” he asked. “Not at all my love…I like it.” she said. Clark suddenly kisses her but as they kissed, his eyes never left mine. I didn’t know how to react or feel anymore and worse of all, I didn’t understand if he was playing games with me or that was just his personality. I broke eye contact with him and looked at my phone. “Are you lovebirds done??” I asked. “Yup, we are done.” Rachel said giggling. Rachel, Clark and I entered the Limo as the driver drove us back home. “Hope you liked what you got today honey??” Clark asked Rachel. “Of course I love them…thank you so much baby.” Rachel said. I sighed deeply as I wished that a man like Clark would find me and also adore me the way he does my sister. It took us a while before we got back to the house and I was already so exhausted. I suddenly got a text message from my best friend Christiana. “Hey girl…I am so mad at you!! You haven’t even texted or called your best friend in days now…..what sort of bestie are you??” she wrote. “I am so sorry girl…it’s been crazy these past days but the highlight of it all is that Rachel is engaged and to be married soon.” I wrote back. “It’s not even April yet so stop playing an april’s fool prank on me.” “I am not christie….the day I left your house was the day she got engaged and that was the emergency mom called me home for.” “I can’t believe this!!!!!!! Can I call!!!!????” “Noooo…you can’t….I am in a car with Rachel and her fiance as we speak…we went wedding shopping.” “Oh my goodness….it gets crazier.” she wrote with a bunch of laughing emojis. “Tell me something I don’t know christie.” “You have to come over tomorrow!! I need every detail in person.” “Yes ma'am.” “I am serious girl…if you don’t I will find my way to your house.” “Fine!! I will try.” “Good…take care and see you sister of the bride.” “Lol..thanks bestie to the sister of the bride.” I wrote. We finally got back to the house and I reluctantly got down from the car. “It seems like sister in law is extremely tired.'' Clark said teasingly. “She will understand when it’s her turn to get married.” Rachel said with a wink. They really suited each other. “Bye baby….see you tomorrow or next??” Rachel asked. “I am sorry love but I am traveling for an important business meeting….but I will make it up to you when I arrive.” he said. “How long are you gonna be gone for??” I asked. I quickly realized that it came out of my mouth without me thinking about it first. “I mean….are you just going to leave Rachel to do everything on her own??” I quickly added to ease the atmosphere. “Yeah, she is right clark..how long are you going to be gone??” Rachel asked with a pouty face. “I will be gone for just three days so you and my sister in law do not need to worry.” “But I am going to miss you so much baby.” Rachel said. “Me too…don’t worry I will call you as much as I can so you won’t miss me too much.” “Okay fair enough….goodnight sweet pea and have a safe trip.” “Goodnight my cupcake.” Clark said. “Can we go back inside now sweet pea??” I asked, rolling my eyes. “Jealous much??” Clark asked. “Oh please.” I said as I opened the door and went inside. “Where have you girls been?? I’ve been worried sick.” My mother said as soon as I entered the house. “Rachel didn’t tell you we went shopping for her ring and wedding dress??” I asked in confusion. “No she didn’t…why would she keep such from me??” she asked. “I am so exhausted mom..when she gets inside, you can ask.” I said as I walked away. I entered my room and just fell into my bed without changing my clothes or washing up the makeup on my face. Just as I was about to fall asleep, I heard a message notification on my phone. I assumed it was from Christie but when I checked, it was an unknown number who sent it. I opened the message as I thought it was a spam message. “Hello there….you didn’t tell me if you liked my gift.” the message read. “Who is this??” I wrote in confusion. “Your brother in law Clark.” “Clark?? How the hell did you get my number??” I wrote back. “I have my ways darling…so did you like the ring??” “Yes, thank you…you didn't have to get it for me.” “Well, I wanted to.” “I am still so confused about this…how did you get my number again??” “Like I said, I have my ways….anyway, I texted to ask something…I am not one to beat about the bush and so I am going straight to the point.” “What is it?? What’s going on??” “Will you travel with me??”CLARK’S POVThe room felt too small after Rachel’s words.Eva is engaged.I sat there, staring at my desk, my eyes unfocused. The broken pen lay between my fingers, ink slowly staining my skin, but I barely noticed. What made me more angry was the fact that she was extremely excited about the news which she just shared.Rachel was still standing in front of me, watching my face like she was waiting for permission to breathe.“Clark?” she called softly. “Did you hear me?”I looked up at her...as a matter of fact, I glared at her.She was still smiling….that polite, practiced smile she always wore in public. The one that said everything is fine, even when it clearly wasn’t.“You said Eva is engaged,” I replied slowly.“Yes,” she nodded. “Daniel proposed…Isn’t that… good news?”Good news.I stood up abruptly, my chair scraping loudly against the floor as Rachel flinched."Rachel??" "Yes baby." “Why are you still here?” I asked. Her brows furrowed. “I came to talk to you….About the
CLARK’S POVThe first thing I felt was anger. Not the loud kind but the quiet one that sits in your chest and burns slowly.Eva’s face kept replaying in my head as I walked out of the restaurant… the shock, the restraint, the disappointment. She didn’t yell, she didn’t cry as she simply chose herself. That hurt more than the water she poured on me and to be honest, I really didn't know what came over me.Seeing her together with that sorry excuse of a man she called her boyfriend made me extremely jealous and furious.I didn’t know where I was going when I stepped into the night. My phone buzzed several times…Rachel, my assistant, even my driver but I ignored all of it.Immediately Eva walked out of the restaurant, Rachel started her usual tantrums and I was definitely not in the mood for that and so I just got up and walked away. I walked until my legs hurt even when I knew very well I had a car and then I saw a bar.The sign flickered like it had lived a hard life, and something
EVA’S POVThe click of the bathroom lock echoed louder than it should have.I turned slowly, my heart pounding as Clark leaned against the door like he owned the space and maybe, in that moment, he did.He didn’t rush me.That was the dangerous part. His eyes travelled over me slowly, lazily, like he had all the time in the world. The corner of his lips lifted in a faint smile. The least I expected to enter the bathroom with me was Clark.…a female bathroom as a matter of fact was Clark.“What are you doing here Clark?? Get out!!!" "Why should I??”"Because first this is a female bathroom?? Are you a pervert??!!”"Oh trust me if I was a pervert you would know.”“Clark, what are you fucking doing here??!! Get out!!!" “So,” he said calmly, breaking the silence.“That’s the kind of man you choose now?”I folded my arms. “Open the door, Clark.”He chuckled softly. “You didn’t answer my question.”“Because it doesn’t deserve an answer.”He straightened and took a step toward me. “Dani
EVA’S POV"You are out of your damn mind!!”My heart was still racing when Clark said those words.“I am not Eva…I know what I want and I don’t want to marry Rachel anymore.”I stared at him like he had just spoken in another language. As much as I cared more than I should for Clark, there were some certain things that were never meant to be or happen as much as I badly wanted it.“Clark… no,” I said immediately, shaking my head. “You can’t say that.”He stepped closer. “I just did.”I took a step back. “You shouldn’t even be here saying this to me……you are to get married soon..what are you saying???.”“I had to.” he replied. “I’m tired of pretending.”“That doesn’t change anything,” I said firmly. “In fact, it makes everything worse.”He frowned. “Why?”“Because I finally realized how serious this is ” I said. “Your mother invited Rachel…That alone tells me this is bigger than feelings.”“My mother invited her but you came along!! And besides she doesn’t even like Rachel,” he
EVA'S POVI thought I was dreaming. That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw him on his knees in front of me.Daniel.My ex-boyfriend.The same man who once promised me forever and then disappeared from my life like I meant nothing. The same man who blocked me on every social media platform, ignored my calls, and pretended I never existed after breaking my heart.I blinked once.Twice.He was still there.“Eva,” he said, his voice breaking. “I still love you.”My heart pounded violently against my chest. For a brief second, I truly believed I had finally lost my mind. Maybe exhaustion had finally caught up with me or maybe loneliness had decided to play tricks on my heart. But when he reached out and held my hand, I knew this was real.I pulled my hand away immediately and suddenly burst into laughter.I was so sure that at that moment, I looked like a maniac laughing like that.“Why are you laughing Eva??? Are you that excited to see me??" “No,” I said sharply. “
CLARK’S POVThe trip ended quietly.Too quietly. No scandals..No headlines and no pictures.Just the kind of silence that follows chaos when everything looks calm on the outside, but something underneath is already cracked. As soon as we landed back home, I felt the weight return to my chest. Work waited, the wedding waited, Life waited. And Rachel followed. She didn’t even ask.I noticed her car behind mine the moment I left the airport. At first, I told myself it was a coincidence but by the third turn, I knew it wasn’t.When I finally pulled into my house and stepped out, she was already getting out of her car, arms folded, lips pressed tight.“What are you doing here, Rachel?” I asked, keeping my voice low.“I followed you,” she said plainly, like it was nothing.“That much is obvious.”She frowned. “Why are you talking to me like that?”“Because you had no business following me to a business trip.” I said sharply. “And you have no business following me home unannounced.”Her
