Conan Farrow is cold, strategic and ruthless. He’ll do whatever he has to do to get what he wants. More often than not, I have heard him tell Calix that the only way to maintain your grasp on power is to do whatever it takes to keep it. But then, deep down, I believed that there was a limit to my father’s desperation for more power and wealth. Calling off my engagement to Zane Van Doren was a harsh reminder of how my father was willing to give up his soul to the devil. When he first imposed the engagement on me, I spent the larger part of my life since then, prepping to become Zane’s Luna. I had to act in the way an Alpha would want. I had to look a certain way. I had to preserve my innocence because according to my father’s conservative traditions, the only man who had the right to get between my legs was my husband. And for months, it was carved and beaten into me that, that man was Zane. My hatred for him meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. I believed that in a matter of weeks, I’ll be married to him and he could do whatever he wanted with me. I think I made my peace with it. It was horrifying that my father would break off the engagement to Zane, and offer me as some sort of sick truce settlement with the monsatrous Lycan Alpha everyone hated. Wolves and Lycans never mingle. My father knows that, but apparently, his morals are far too flawed to be applied in this situation. I can’t run. I can’t hide. I can’t escape my fate. My father is like a smoke. He traps me so hard in a box. I can’t elude him. It’s pointless to run because he’ll find me. I’m his biggest investment. He can’t afford rebellion on my side. The door to my room creaks open, revealing my mother’s figure. I barely flinch. I look away from her, back to the mirror to see what the maid had done to my face. The thought of looking dolled up and heading down for dinner with Zane makes me sick. “Leave us.” She commands the maids in the room and they step out. She approaches me, plastering a smile on her face, but I can see right through her. Caitlin Farrow has become a shadow of herself. Sometimes, I don’t even see her when I look at her. I see the ghost of a woman who has lost so much to being trapped with a power-hungry man like my father. “You look beautiful,” she sits beside me. “You are going to make a very beautiful bride.” I can’t resist a snort. “There’s no wedding yet.” “But there will be.” Something in me snaps. “You are really going to let him do this to me?” Her eyes flicker with guilt. “Your father wants the best for you.” “By marrying me off to a monster?” “His methods are quite…” “Cruel? Cold? Heartless?” I bark out an array of words that can attempt to describe the insanity that my father is unleashing right now. “I was going to say complicated.” She clears her throat, reaching for my hands. “Men are quite simple creatures, really. Give him what he wants. Be a good wife to him. Bear his heir.” “Being stubborn will get you nowhere.” My breath hitches at her words. I can’t believe she’s suggesting that I go through with it; marry a man who hunts my kind, who has more blood on his hands than all the Alphas in Redwood combined. “I can’t do it. I can’t marry him.” “Cataleya—“ “No,” I shake my head. “Don’t let him do this to me. I’ll marry Zane. I’ll be a good Luna to him. Mother, please.” My voice cracks heavily. I know the hell that Zane is capable of weilding. His horrors are more predictable than that of a man who looks like darkness personified. “It has been decided.” Her voice trembles as she looks away from me. I snatch my hand out of hers. “Why can’t you fight him? Why can’t you fight back? He’s selling off your first child and you sit there—“ “Cataleya Farrow!” she yells. “That’s enough.” A lone tear drips down my cheek. It feels like I can’t breathe for a moment. Why can’t she see how miserable this will make me? “I will hear no more of your incessant whining about how awful this marriage is,” she says sternly. “Your father has strived to build a legacy. To give you a good life. This truce could fix things. It can make things better. He…he could be supreme Alpha.” “Is that what I’m worth?” I whisper. “Me in exchange for power?” “Stubborn child,” she hisses. “You will do as you are told. That’s what we Farrow women do.” “Fix this mess,” she gestures to the tears on my face, “and come downstairs. Zane is waiting. Your father has to break the news to him.” I don’t get time to mourn the freedom I’m about to lose. I touch up my makeup and reluctantly head downstairs where they are waiting for me. Zane is nestled at a corner with an empty seat next to him. His eyes are thick with lust as they scan my curves in the red dress I’m wearing. “Hello, gorgeous.” I’m tempted to roll my eyes as he pulls out a seat for me. My father sits across me, watching me with cold, dark eyes that constantly remind me to maintain my manners. “Let’s eat. Shall we?” Zane grins. My father clears his throat, seemingly edgy. “There’s something I’d like for us to discuss first.”CataleyaA soft whimper eludes from me as my eyes slowly fluttered open. The side of my head throbs with a dull ache, but the more conscious I get, the harder the pain hits.My fingers curl around the side of my head, and I gasp seeing the blood that smears them.I try to remember what happened or how I got injured but nothing comes to mind.Something is not right. Ember whimpers. I’m a little stunned because she has been so quiet these days. Ember and I have a strained relationship. She barely communicates with me, majorly because of her grudge against the man I chose as my mate.Seth.The thought of his name provokes me to reality. My breath hitches as the memories flood my mind. I couldn’t reach Seth. I snuck away from the Pack to see him at the Cabin, only to find him with Alison. A low sob punches its way through my mouth as the weight of his betrayal descends on him.I was such a fool.I loved him with all my heart, but the whole time he had been stabbing me in the back by sleep
CataleyaI gaze into the distance, watching the Farrow property that spreads beyond the compound. My mind drifts to Seth. I haven’t seen him since the night of the party, and I can’t exactly go up to Beta Hanson to ask him the whereabouts of his son.It will trigger suspicion. My eyes flicker from the window where I’m sitting when the door to my room opens. It reveals one of the maids with a steaming cup of tea that I’m now achingly familiar with.“Good evening, Heiress.” She mumbles stiffly, approaching me. “The Luna says I must see to it that you take your tea for the night.”I hate the herbs that are often brewed together and brought to me every night.Mother says it aids to wash out my womb, and prep it for swift conceiving. An old recipe of her late Mother, it seems.“I don’t want it.” I mumble dryly.“But—“My harsh stare cuts her off, then my eyes slowly devours her appearance. She’s wearing a hideous black dress, her dark hair neatly tucked in a plain cap. I can see her, but s
Cataleya“You are not wearing your ring.” Zane frowns, ignoring the comment my father just made.My heart skips. “I…uh—““Is this how you parade my wife in front of other men without letting them know she’s taken?” Zane asks icily.“That’s not true,” I chip in quickly.“Do not interrupt me, love.” He counters me condescendingly without sparing me a glance. My mother looks nervous but she maintains the signature good wife smile on her face. “I’m sure everyone knows she’s engaged to you by now, Zane.”“I’m sorry,” I rush the words out. This is a dinner from hell. I have barely had any meal yet I feel so full from the contempt crawls beneath my skin and the tension that hangs thickly in the atmosphere.“It won’t happen again.”“Good,” he murmurs. “Now, we can eat.”“I did mention that there’s something we need to discuss.” Father interrupts him.“My apologies, Conan.” Zane flashes him a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes. “You do understand why I’m a little uncomfortable about her hiding

MalakaiA WEEK AGO“I just want to have a little chat, Conan.” I drawl, assessing him. The atmosphere in the room is tense, and I can tell that beneath all those cocktail dresses and million dollar suits, lingers fear that made them want to shrink into their skins.Wolves have always been threatened by my kind; of what we are capable of and how dangerously unpredictably we can be.Conan is not an exception. He wears an expression of steel, doesn’t cower beneath my gaze, but when you have been dealing with all sort of monsters, you learn that even monsters have their tell.My lips twitch in a smirk. “Don’t worry. You can take some of your little guards with you.” I offer him a false safety net.If I wanted to rip his head off his neck, not even the guards in this room can stop me.He knows that.I know that.“I don’t need anyone accompanying me. I can take you.”I grin, my eyes scanning the room. He didn’t have to beckon me. When he turns around, I go after him into somewhere more sec
Cataleya“I'm telling you, Alison. It's unlike him.” I whine to Alison, my best friend, shutting the book lying on my lap. I fiddle with my fingers, my lips twisting in a grimace as I look into the distance. It's past sunset, and the clouds have taken a shade of dark grey. They cast an eerie shadow over the Farrow property. My room overlooks the giant water fountain standing gracefully in the enormous compound of the vintage building.“Cat, breathe.” Alison says dryly. The lack of concern in her tone causes me to look over my shoulder swiftly. The redhead is sitting on the beige couch in my ivory and beige vintage-themed room. One of the straps of her tiny black dress is falling over her shoulders where she's seated. Her slender body is pressed to her knees as she applies an extra coat of polish on her red nails. With her flaming red hair and beautiful soft curves that she rarely keeps hidden in her choice of clothes, Alison's brazen appearance and personality contrasts my tamed, e
