“Good night, Mom and Dad. Thank you so much, April.” I said as I got up to leave the family house. “Wait, Jax. I got something for May. Can I come with you?” “Uhh..” I looked at my mom. She nodded at me with a smile. I wanted to talk to Fiona tonight, just the both of us. “Okay. Sure. Grab an umbrella. You can't keep holding on to me.” I walked out of the living room and hurried to the car. As I got in, April showed up with an umbrella and got into the car as well. “Thank you so much for this.” She placed her hand on mine. I smiled and took out my hand. I started the engine and drove to my mansion. May was sitting in the living room with her iPad. “Daddy! April!” “Hey, baby.” “Hey, May.” I looked around. The house felt cold, like no one was around. “Where is your mommy?” “I don't know.” She hopped over to April. “Aunt April, look what I made.” I hurried up the stairs to our room. She wasn't there. Where could she be? I looked out the balcony to the gazebo, where she normally sat but she wasn't there. I came back downstairs. “May, did you see Mommy today?” I checked my watch. It was after nine. Where on earth was she? Was she on a stroll? It was raining. “Mommy came to my room and said she was going away.” May said, absentmindedly as she showed April the iPad. “What? Going away?” “Try calling her. I'm sure she is around.” April reassured me. I brought out my phone and dialed her number. It was unreachable. The second time, it said the same thing. I began pacing the room. Fiona wasn't reckless. She couldn't have left like that. She was always home or working on her jewelry designs with her laptop. Though I hadn't seen her with her laptop recently. But she was always home. “Jax, calm down. There is no way she left without you knowing. We can ask the gateman in the morning. Maybe she’s still processing the news about the surrogacy. Yeah, April was right. “I’ll take a shower now.” I said, leaving May with her. As I entered the room again, I felt a certain calm that was unusual. Something wasn't right. But April had a point. Fiona had been acting weird since the news about the surrogacy. I had planned to come home and apologize for the way I spoke to her. I slowly peeled my clothes off my body and got into the shower. My dad was not as strong as he used to be. I had taken over the family business. I needed an heir to be sure I secured my place. That damn family agreement—my father had made an agreement with his father and brother that the family business would remain with the male line. If my father or his son didn't have a son to continue the family line, the property would pass to my uncle. And now that responsibility had been passed to me. I also needed a boy. That's why this surrogacy was important. I wish I had told her before but she was too worked up to listen to me. I loved Fiona from the bottom of my heart and I needed her by my side. She had helped me overcome so much. Including what happened with April. It hurts me that April was chosen by my mother, as we really needed this to be really private. But she was the only choice, she was my ex and a close family friend. I turned off the shower, wiped my body and got out. The room was still empty, Fiona couldn't have actually left. I dressed up and went back downstairs and April and May were nowhere to be found. But her phone was on the couch so I sat and waited for her. Shortly, she was downstairs. “You're done, May has slept off. So I tucked her in. Any news on Fiona?” “Not yet. I'm sure she'll be back soon. Thank you for May.” “Yeah, sure anytime.” She walked to the couch to pick up her phone. “So, good night.” “April, I have a question to ask you.” She stopped in her tracks and sighed like she knew where this was going. She sat down again and turned on her phone. “Please be quick, I have to head to the mansion.” “Sure, I won't waste your time.” I straightened. “Why did you come back?” She slowly began tapping her foot on the floor and her grip on her phone tightened. I watched quietly, waiting for her response. After a few minutes, she looked at me. “That's because my Dad needs someone here to handle his business.” I smirked a bit. “Why you? What about your brother?” “He would handle the other branch abroad.” She looked agitated as she responded to me. “So why be the surrogate?” “It's okay, Jax.” Tears streamed down her cheeks as she got up immediately. “Fine.” I stopped asking her, but why was she crying? “If you need to talk, I'm always here.” “That's good to know.” She strolled out of the house. Since April returned, she had been staying with my mother and father at the family house. She was always independent, this side of her was new to me. I climbed upstairs and checked on May. She was happily asleep, snoring lightly just like her mother. I walked back to our room, picked up my phone and tried calling her again. It repeated the same automated message. Where could she have gone? Was she doing this to spite me? Well, whatever. She would be back and I would talk things over with her. There was a file I had searched at the office, maybe it was here. I searched for it in my study, but it wasn't there. But my secretary must have misplaced it. It was a really important file for a client. I went back into the room. ‘Where was the file?’ My eyes hit my bedside mini-counter. I wasn't sure it would be there, but I decided to check every nook. I squatted and opened the drawers on my side. After checking all three, it wasn't there. I doubt it would be on Fiona's side. I checked the first, then the second, nothing. I was tired of this. When I opened the third drawer, I saw a blue file with ‘MedCare Hospital’ written on it. It was a test result file with Fiona’s name on it. Why would she go to the hospital without me?JASPER'S POV“Good night, Mom and Dad. Thank you so much, April.” I said as I got up to leave the family house. “Wait, Jax. I got something for May. FIONA'S POVTwo days had passed, and my husband and daughter had not responded to me. They were always at the family house. Jasper moved from the family real estate company to the house. He didn't care that his wife was here. Dying. Alone. May had already been won over by her father's family. What could I do? I had tried to talk to her for the past few days but she was treating me like a virus. I stared at the drugs I placed on the counter. My health got so bad, I had to buy the medication the doctor had given me. Why was this happening to me? Six months. I guess it's for the best. I would leave this world of suffering. Filled with hatred and power hungry people. I remembered when I met Jasper at the club where I worked as a barista. He was caring and loving, not this controlled man that I know now. He would take me out on dates and meet up with my late mom. My mom. She was the only person I had. She had found a crying child on the road and didn't abandon her.Right now, I wish
FIONA'S POVLater that evening, Jasper called May and I to the living room to discuss family matters. I really didn't want to be there. A whole 24 hours had passed and my husband didn't show any interest in me. He spent the remainder of the day with May and April at the main house. Now, he wants to talk like a family?I'm slowly getting fed up with the nonsense going on. Had it not been for May, I wouldn't have been here a second longer. “Come sit with me, baby.” I called May, but she sat close to her Dad. I wonder why I bother. “Okay. So, have we accepted that April will do the surrogacy for us?” “Yes!” May answered excitedly. I looked at her in shock.“What do you mean by ‘yes’ my love? Do you know what a surrogate means?” I sat up straight watching her. “Yes. It means she will be my mommy too. Right, daddy? And she will bring a brother for me. Unlike mommy.” “Okay! I have had enough. May, why do you always talk to me like that? I'm your mother!”I stared at her as her words
FIONA'S POV Jasper's words about April kept resurfacing in my mind as the cold breeze of the night brushed past me while I stood on the balcony.I couldn't sleep. April was Jasper's first love. He had told me about her before we got married. How she chose to go abroad over him, he had planned to propose to her the next day and she left without a goodbye, leaving him shattered. It was the same woman he wanted to carry our child. I couldn't let that happen. Janice had been restless over this male child ruckus. She brought up this surrogate issue and now I had to watch our child grow in my husband's ex-girlfriend’s belly. I looked back into the room, Jasper was sleeping calmly. Like he hadn't dropped a bomb. He didn't even ask me what I was going to tell him. I was going to die and his ex was coming back into his life. I walked back to the room and laid beside him. He was facing the other side. For the past few nights now, that was how he had been sleeping. Away from me, not eve
FIONA’S POV I had half a year to live. Tears welled up in my eyes as I sat in front of MedCare hospital, going through my results. I had almost fallen down the stairs this afternoon at home from dizziness. Hoping that I was pregnant, I rushed down to the hospital and was handed the worst news of my life. I had severe aplastic anemia. I had experienced all the symptoms the doctor explained. A tear streamed down my cheeks. Six months. What was I going to accomplish in six months? How could I tell my little princess and my husband that I was going to die in a short while? Would she even be sad? May, my daughter, had started acting out toward me. She was a young child, yes, but I was her mother. Her behavior towards me wasn't the usual, young child screams at mom. She straight up called me a “wicked woman” and “loser”. She shouldn't know what those words meant. I suspect she had learned such from her grandmother. Janice Armstrong. May spent most of her time with her father's fam
