I ran back to the apartment. I didn’t care who saw me. I didn’t care if people stared or whispered as I passed. I didn’t care if my heels scraped against the pavement or if my hair fell loose around my face.

I just ran.

My lungs burned. My heart beat so hard it felt like it might burst through my ribs. My thoughts were loud and broken, crashing into each other without order.

The apartment door slammed shut behind me, the sound echoing through the empty room. My back hit the wood as I slid down,

Kaela's POVI snuck out to see Taren and know how he was doing. I didn’t need to see him, I could always call, but part of me needed to see him.He opened the door almost immediately. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, stepping aside anyway.“I know.” The door closed behind me. We stood there in the dim light, close enough to feel each other breathe.“Is Katrina around?,” I asked, looking around for that witch.“No, she’s out running an errand or ruining someone's life,” he replied. “Or both.”I laughed at that and Taren stepped closer. “Why are you really here kaela?”“Since when did I need a permit to go where I wanted?” I crossed my arms. “Are you going to tell me to leave?”He shook his head slowly. “I don’t think I can. But just know that I can’t guarantee that nothing will happen if you stay."My heart rate skyrocketed, I wanted something to happen. I needed it.“Taren, I wanted to…” I started, but the sentence barely formed. He moved first, closing the space between us in a spli

Kaela's POVI hadn’t expected Katarina to go that far. Jealousy did strange things to people, but this was reckless even by her standards. One minute, the deck had been filled with low chatter and clinking glasses, the next, she was standing there with her chin lifted and eyes blazing, acting like she held everyone’s fate in her hands.“Do it,” she said sharply, her fingers digging into Taren’s sleeve. “Or I tear up the agreement right now. And I tell Rhett everything.”The words landed like a slap. The music continued in the background. Laughter floated from the other end of the massive yacht. No one close enough was paying real attention yet, but that could change in seconds.Taren stiffened. I could see it in his shoulders. His jaw clenched so tight I thought his teeth might crack.“You’re out of your mind,” he said through his teeth. “This is blackmail.”Katarina laughed, but it sounded thin. “Call it whatever you want. Kiss me. Right here. Or the plan dies.”I stood a few steps a

Kaela's POVI held my breath behind the hedge, counting the seconds by the faint click of my pulse in my ears. The leaves were trimmed too neatly to hide in. If he just got close enough he would definitely see us.Rhett’s wheelchair continued over the stone pathway stone towards us. The sound drew closer. My stomach tightened. I pictured his eyes scanning the hedges.Katarina’s voice cut through the tension. “Rhett? There you are. I’ve been looking all over for you.”I flinched. Taren didn’t move.“Have you seen Kaela?" Rhett asked in a deep voice.“Ummm, Yeah i think i saw her step into the restroom,” Katarina lied. “She probably needs to touch up her makeup. Minister Villard asked for you. Something about the aviation park.”Rhett stopped. I could see glimpses of him from behind the hedge. He didn’t look too happy about that so with a sigh he turned his wheelchair around.“If you see kaela again, tell her I’ll be back,” he said, already moving.Taren and I waited until the grounds

Kaela's POVI contacted Clementine, and with Clémentine's help, I secured two invitations to the Werewolf Golf Invitational. I accompanied Rhett to the event over the weekend. He was in his wheelchair, dressed sharply in a navy blazer and white shirt. The venue was beautiful, with rolling green lawns, white tents, and tables covered in crisp linen.Rhett was eager to find Minister Villard to discuss the Werewolf Aviation Industrial Park project. His eyes kept scanning the crowd as I pushed his wheelchair through the entrance. He was tense, his shoulders tight with anticipation."There are so many people here," I said, looking around at the crowd. Politicians, businesspeople, and pack leaders, all dressed in their finest clothes."Villard has to be here somewhere," Rhett said. "I need to talk to him before anyone else does."But then we saw him. Taren. He arrived with an air of ease, walking like he owned the place. He looked relaxed and confident, as if this were just another casual d

Kaela's POVWhen I woke up, Taren was already awake. He was looking at me with soft eyes, the kind of look that made my chest feel warm. I reached out and touched his wounded shoulder gently with my fingertips."Does it still hurt?" I asked. He took my hand and brought it to his lips. He kissed my knuckles, one by one. "Having you by my side fills me with pure joy," he said. "The pain doesn't matter."My cheeks got hot. I looked away, feeling embarrassed by how much his words affected me. But then I looked back at his face. The bruises were still there, dark purple and yellow. The bandage on his arm was thick and white, covering the burns.I placed my hand over the bandage and closed my eyes. I felt the warmth flow from my palm into his skin. My healing power. It wasn't strong, but it was enough. The bruises on his face started to fade. The swelling went down.Memories of the fire came flooding back. The flames. The smoke. Taren is running into the building. I opened my mouth to speak

Kaela's POVI ran toward Werewolf Aviation Studios. My legs were pumping, my lungs burning. The fire was massive, with flames shooting out of the windows and black smoke pouring into the sky. I had to get inside. I had to get the manuscript. Before I could reach the door, arms grabbed me from behind. Strong arms that wrapped around my waist and pulled me back hard."No!" I screamed. "Let me go!"It was Taren. He held me tight, his grip like iron. I twisted and fought, but he wouldn't let go."Kaela, stop!" he yelled. "You can't go in there!""I have to!" I pounded my fists against his chest. Tears were streaming down my face. "The manuscript is in there! My mother's manuscript! It's the only memory I have left of her! The only thing!"I hit him again. And again. My fists struck his chest over and over. I was screaming and crying at the same time."It's all I have left of her!" I sobbed. "Please! I have to get it!"Taren's face was tight with pain, but not from my fists. He looked at m
