Chapter 1

1. The Night She Stopped Being Invincible

POV: Mira

I stood in front of the mirror in my room and stared at my reflection, like it might suddenly give me answers. My heartbeat was fast and light in my throat, like it was already trying to run away from the night.

Tonight was the party, and it was supposed to change everything.

Our team had just defeated Ridgewood college, our oldest rival. Not the kind you just hate—the kind written into your bones. Old pack wars. Old scars. Old pride carried like a legacy.

So Bella White, the college cheer captain, decided to throw a celebration party at her family’s beach house.

And everyone was invited.

Everyone.

Even me.

Mira Vale.

From the smallest and most forgotten pack in town.

The girl nobody noticed.

The quiet omega people’s shoulders brushed past in the halls without slowing, like I was part of the wall.

And yet here I was, invited.

But that wasn’t even the best part.

Tonight, everyone would finally know.

I wouldn’t be invisible anymore.

Tonight, everyone at the college would find out I was Alpha Kevin Cornell’s mate. A mate bond wasn’t just about love. It was a mark all wolves respected, a sign of your place in the pack. Breaking it wasn’t just shocking. It was something no one would forgive.

My fingers drifted unconsciously to the faint mark at my collarbone.

I could still remember the way his lips felt there last night — warm, slow, careful, like I was something fragile he didn’t want to break.

“You’re mine, Mira,” he’d whispered against my skin. “And tomorrow everyone will know it.”

My stomach fluttered, heat spreading through my chest at the memory.

“You look so beautiful,” Chloe said, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I blinked and turned. She stood beside me, one hand over her mouth in her dramatic way. Her thick blonde curls bounced as she stared at me with wide brown eyes.

“Am I not telling the truth, Tina?” Chloe added. “Doesn’t she look beautiful?”

Tina sat on my bed, legs crossed, phone in hand. She lifted her head slowly, her gaze sweeping over me from head to toe before she nodded once.

“You see?” Chloe said, pointing at her. “Even Tina agrees.”

Warmth spread through my chest, loosening the tight knot that had been sitting there all evening. “You both look good today too.”

Chloe was wearing a flower-patterned dress that stopped above her knees, bright and soft, just like her. Tina had gone with her usual style—a simple black dress, clean lines, quiet confidence.

Chloe spun with a laugh. “Well, thank you. I always try my best.”

I turned back to the mirror. My ginger hair was pulled halfway up into a loose bun, with soft curls falling around my face. I was wearing a red blouse that showed a generous amount of my cleavage and my flat tummy, paired with black baggy trousers. Cool air brushed my skin where fabric didn’t cover, making me suddenly aware of every inch of myself.

I tugged the blouse higher.

“I feel awkward,” I admitted.

Chloe slapped my hand away. “Stop that. You have big boobs. You should show them.”

I laughed quietly.

For once, I actually believed her.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” Chloe said, bouncing. “After all these years of being treated like trash, we’re finally being seen.”

Her words hit deep.

Chloe and I came from the same small omega pack. Tina came from power and money. But she never treated us like we were less.

“Alpha Kevin is going to faint when he sees you,” Chloe teased.

“You think?” I squealed.

Tina made a gag sound. “You two are embarrassing.”

I threw a shirt at her.

“Ouch,” she laughed.

“She’s allergic to love,” Chloe said.

“I’m not allergic to love,” Tina said. “I believe in deep love. Just not romance. Romance is overrated. Just vibes and heartbreak. I’ll pass. I just hope Alpha Kevin isn’t like the rest.”

“He’s not,” I said quickly. My wolf lifted her head inside me, protective. “My Kevin is kind. He’s gentle. He loves me.”

At least, that’s what I believed.

Tina looked up. “Wait… didn’t you go to his parents’ place last night?”

My cheeks warmed.

Chloe gasped. “She’s blushing.”

“Yes,” I said, lifting my chin. “We finally did it.”

They screamed.

I covered my ears.

“You lost your v!” Tina shouted.

“Shhh!” Chloe grabbed her arm and looked around. “Do you want the whole dorm to hear you?”

I flipped my hair like I was some kind of star.

“I’m so happy for you,” Chloe said, squeezing my hand. Then she leaned closer. “So… did you enjoy it?”

I smiled. “It hurt at first, but then it was really good.”

They screamed again and started jumping.

“Stop,” I begged, laughing. “Please stop.”

Tina wiped fake tears. “How many times?”

I lifted my hand slowly and held up three fingers.

They completely lost their minds.

“Three times!” Chloe shouted.

“Three times!” Tina echoed.

I covered my face. They were impossible.

“Look,” I said, pulling my collar down a little.

Kevin’s mark was faint but real.

Both girls went quiet.

“This is really it,” Chloe whispered, staring at it. Her eyes filled with tears. “My girl finally moved up in rank.”

She held my hands tightly. “Nobody will look down on you again. Once everyone finds out your mate is Kevin Cornell, the most popular boy in school.”

“Actually,” Tina cut in with a playful flip of her hair, “second most popular.”

“The devil, you mean,” I whispered, a shiver dancing down my spine.

Chloe nudged my shoulder, grinning. “Okay, Klaus might hold the crown for most popular, but your boyfriend?” She wiggled her brows. “He’s a gentleman. And definitely not like him.”

That pulled a smile right out of me.

“When are you making it public?” Tina asked. “You’ve been hiding for two months.”

“Tonight,” I said.

They froze.

“Tonight?” Chloe asked.

My heart started racing again. “He’s announcing me at the party.”

They screamed and rushed me at the same time, hugging me so tightly I could barely breathe.

“I’m so happy for you,” Chloe said.

“This is so romantic,” she added. “I’m jealous.”

I laughed. “Don’t worry. You’ll find your own prince someday.”

“Not me,” Tina said. “Boys are dumb. But I’m happy for you.”

The three of us hugged again, jumping and laughing, full of hope.

And for the first time in my life, I truly believed everything was about to get better.

Bella’s beach house was one of the biggest on the shore.

No—beach house didn’t even feel like the right word.

It was more like a palace.

The moment we stepped out of the car, the bass hit me like a wave. The sand shook under my shoes. The music thumped against my ribs like a second heartbeat.

Lights flashed across the deck — red, green, blue — bouncing over faces and bodies until everything looked unreal, like I’d stepped into someone else’s world.

The air smelled of salt, perfume, and alcohol.

Everyone had something in their hands.

Beer cans.

Wine bottles.

Vodka cups.

Laughter exploded. Feet shuffled on the deck. Voices overlapped. wolf instincts catching everything at once — scents, sounds, movements. It was overwhelming, like standing in the middle of a storm made of people.

And then there was us.

As usual, no one noticed when Chloe and I walked in.

No heads turned.

No eyes lingered.

Only Tina got a few looks.

Chloe squeezed my hand. Her palm was warm, slightly damp.

“I think we should accept the truth,” she murmured. “We’re invisible to them.”

The words sank like cold water into my stomach.

“We actually tried tonight,” she added softly. “But still… nothing.”

I swallowed. The music suddenly felt louder. The air thicker.

Before I could answer, Tina turned toward us.

“Will you both stop that?”

We looked at her.

“You came here to party,” she said. “Not to feel sorry for yourselves. And you, Mira—today is your big day. You look amazing. Are you really going to let these stuck-up rich kids ruin it?”

My spine straightened.

“No,” I said.

“Good,” Tina replied. “Now go find your Alpha.”

She was right.

My pulse quickened instantly.

Today was my day.

I stepped into the crowd, heat from bodies brushing mine as I passed. Perfumes clashed. Laughter burst near my ear. Someone bumped my shoulder and didn’t even glance back.

I stood on my toes, searching.

No Kevin.

I pulled out my phone and called him.

Straight to voicemail.

I frowned and tried again.

Nothing.

A strange unease curled low in my stomach.

Why was his phone off?

Where was he?

I kept walking.

Then something shifted.

Not loudly. Not obviously.

But enough that my wolf stirred, restless beneath my skin.

Then I felt it.

That pull in the air. Heavy. Magnetic.

Around me, people began turning, drawn in the same direction like iron to a magnet.

I looked.

And there he was.

Klaus Saint.

The golden boy of the college.

He moved through the crowd like he belonged above it, not in it. Girls squealed, reaching for him, calling his name like he was something divine.

I didn’t get it. Why did they treat him like a celebrity?

He didn’t even look at them — not once. That alone was strange. Usually, he thrived on attention.

But today…

His face was carved from ice. His jaw tight. His eyes sharp and dangerous.

Something was wrong.

He looked furious.

My spine snapped straight as he approached, every nerve suddenly aware of how close he was.

Careful. Don’t touch him.

Not even by accident.

This was Klaus — the boy rumors followed like shadows. The boy people feared even while they adored him.

Heartless, they called him.

But as he passed me, close enough that I felt the faintest brush of his presence —

my breath caught.

And I hated that it did.

Only when he was gone did I inhale again, steadying myself before turning back to search for Kevin… as if my pulse hadn’t just betrayed me.

I thought about asking people, but my courage failed me.

These kids already looked down on me.

They didn’t even know I was Kevin’s mate yet.

I didn’t want to give them another reason to laugh.

My wolf urged me to stay quiet. She could feel their dislike toward omegas like us.

So I searched alone.

After checking everywhere downstairs, I headed for the stairs.

Maybe Kevin had gone upstairs.

My footsteps felt too loud on the staircase. My heartbeat thudded in my ears, faster with every step. By the time I reached the hallway, my palms were damp.

Two girls walked toward me.

My wolf stirred.

Safe.

“Excuse me,” I said softly. “Please… have either of you seen Alpha Kevin?”

One shook her head.

The other thought. “I saw him earlier. I think he went into that room.” She pointed. “First door on the right.”

My pulse jumped hard enough to make my chest ache.

“Was he alone?”

She nodded. “Yeah.”

Relief fluttered through me.

“Thank you.”

I walked down the hallway. Each step felt heavier than the last. The air near the door was warmer, thicker, laced with a scent that made my wolf stir uneasily.

I stopped.

My hand hovered over the handle.

I didn’t knock.

I opened it.

And immediately wished I hadn’t.

Kevin was on the bed.

And he wasn’t alone.

Bella.

Her scent hit me first — sharp perfume, sweat, and him tangled all through it. The smell slammed into my chest like a physical blow.

They were tangled together in the sheets, limbs everywhere, sweat and skin and the blankets twisted around them. Kevin’s pants were halfway down his legs, Bella’s panties tossed on the floor like trash, and they were just there, having sex.

My heart stuttered.

Stopped.

“What the fuck?” I screamed.
