VANESSA

The next morning, Rose arrived.

“What happens if Lillian opens whatever is holding me closed during the ceremony?” I kept my attention on the oldest copy of the Blood Authority Covenant.

Rose sat across from me at the Grayson dining table with copies of the old compact spread between us. Lillian sat with her parents. Cole and Christopher occupied the other side, while Mum and Dad had taken the seats nearest the windows.

We were finished searching for Subject Two. We knew exactly who

LILLIAN’S POV “Four registration references, and not one of them has a name?” I stared at the document Arden had placed on her desk. Helen leaned closer, adjusting her glasses to examine the numbers. “The names were recorded in a separate schedule,” Arden explained. “Unfortunately, the council hasn't located it.” “Then how do we know whether my registration was included?” “We don't. But this summary confirms that the joint verification exercise took place and was marked as completed.” I picked up the second page. Four numbers appeared beneath the heading Pending Heir Declarations, followed by dates and abbreviations I didn't understand. “Could each number belong to a different child?” “Possibly. Some references cover multiple registrations, so we shouldn't assume that.” Helen frowned. “Julian challenged this exercise because he was worried about Lillian's registration. Surely they wouldn't have accepted his objection if she wasn't involved.” “Receiving an objection doesn't pr

  • Fake Dating The Lycan's Heir   Chapter 96: The Promise

VANESSA’S POV “I want you to promise that you won't make decisions about my life without talking to me first.” Cole stared at me, his car keys dangling from one finger. “Where's this coming from? Have I done something?” “No. But I want us to talk about it before it becomes a problem.” He glanced toward the sitting room, where Dad was laughing at something on television. “Should we go outside?” I nodded and followed him onto the porch. Cole closed the door behind us, then turned to face me. “Tell me what's bothering you, Vanessa.” “You know how much I hated finding out that my parents sealed my powers when I was four. I understand they were trying to protect me, but I still had to live with the consequences.” “And you're worried I'll make the same mistake?” “I'm worried you'll decide something is too dangerous for me and try to handle it without asking what I want.” Cole slipped his keys into his pocket. “I'd never deliberately go behind your back.” “I believ

  • Fake Dating The Lycan's Heir   Chapter 95: Dinner Without the Council

VANESSA’S POV“If you brought a single council document into this house, Cole Grayson, you're eating dinner outside.”Cole stopped in the doorway with two bags of food.“That's a strange way to welcome someone who's feeding you.”“Answer the question.”“No documents. Just dinner.” He raised an eyebrow. “Unless you'd like to search me?”I folded my arms, trying not to smile. “Don't tempt me.”He laughed as I stepped aside to let him in.Mom appeared from the kitchen while Cole placed the bags on the dining table.“Good evening, Cole,” she greeted him.“Good evening, Mrs. James. I brought enough for everyone.”“That was thoughtful. Vanessa's been telling me you're responsible for dinner tonight.”“She gave me very specific instructions.”“I told him not to bring anything that tastes like cardboard,” I explained, earning an amused look from Mom.Dad joined us shortly afterward and helped unpack the food. Once everything was ready, Mom suggested that Cole and I take our dinner upstairs.“

  • Fake Dating The Lycan's Heir   Chapter 94: The Grayson Reference

COLE’S POV“Before you ask whether your grandfather ordered it, Cole, you need to hear what the archivist actually found.”Mrs. Ellery's warning came through the phone while Dad and I sat in his study, reviewing the notes from our previous conversation.“All right,” I said. “Tell us.”“The index identifies a joint verification exercise under a Grayson succession-file reference. It doesn't identify who submitted the request, who approved it, or which family members were informed.”“But someone had to request it,” I said.“Yes, and that's the document we're trying to locate.”Dad leaned forward. “Does the entry give a date?”Mrs. Ellery read it out. It was from the period when my grandfather, Edmund Grayson, had been involved in the family's succession affairs.“Grandfather was handling those matters then,” I said.“He handled some of them,” Dad corrected. “Other people were responsible for administrative correspondence. We don't know whether he saw this particular request.”“Wouldn't h

  • Fake Dating The Lycan's Heir   Chapter 93: The Heir’s Register

COLE’S POV Lillian called the next morning while Dad and I were finishing breakfast. She said she had spoken to Julian Vale’s former solicitor and that the office named in Julian’s objection was the Office of Succession Records. “Have you sent the papers to Arden?” I asked. “Hale is arranging that. I’m not asking you to look at my father’s file, Cole. I thought your family might know what that office did.” “I’ll ask Dad. If we learn anything from the public records, I’ll tell you.” “Thank you. Helen’s waiting for advice before we answer the other council office.” After the call, I repeated what she had told me. Dad put down his cup and considered the name. “There was an office responsible for recording succession eligibility,” he said. “I remember references to it in older council correspondence. That doesn’t explain why it was involved in a child’s registration.” “Could it be the receiving office mentioned in the damaged appendix?” “It could be, but we shouldn’t trea

LILLIAN’S POV“Julian Vale’s former legal representative?” I repeated. “Did he answer them?”“We don’t know,” Cole said. “The records unit confirmed it sent an inquiry. That’s all our adviser was able to establish.”Helen was still at the kitchen table, listening. I looked at her before answering. “Then we’ll ask him ourselves. Helen has the estate papers.”“That sounds sensible,” Vanessa said. “Call me after you’ve spoken to him, if you want to.”I thanked them and ended the call. Helen went to the locked cabinet in her study and returned with a thin folder labelled VALE ESTATE. She laid it beside the adoption documents we had already examined.“Julian’s solicitor dealt with the records that established your parentage,” she explained. “The adoption office gave me his contact details in case there was ever a question about those documents.”I opened the folder. A letter near the front carried the name Martin Hale and an office address. “Is he still practising?”“I don’t know. We can c
