Ledger's POV

As soon as I tried to reach for the year book in Cassie's hands, she jerked backwards. Almost instinctively. My hand paused in the air, surprised at her reaction.

Cassie winced. “I don't think you should see this. You wouldn’t believe me anyway.”

That stung. My brows pulled together. “Why would I not believe you?”

She shook her head, hugging it tighter. “Because it’s just speculation right now. Circumstantial at best. Nothing solid. If I tell you and I’m wrong, then that means I just stirred things up for nothing.”

“Cass, just tell me.” I said gently. “Whatever it is, I'd rather find out about it now than later.”

She was silent for a little while as though she was weighing the pros and cons of telling me the truth. Finally, her shoulders dropped. “Tell me Zeke’s full name.”

“Zeke Evans,” I answered, trying not to sound wary. So whatever it was had something to do with her suspicions about Zeke.

Her eyes flicked up at me. “I meant his full name.”

That made me frown. “Wha

  • Fake Dating With The Playboy hockey Captain   Chapter 171

Ledger's POV “Wow, Ledge. You've been holding out on us.” Freddie grinned as I offered him a hand. He took it and I lifted him off the ice.“You were great before but you've gotten really good now.” Silas commented from the sidelines. Freddie looked back at the net he’d failed to hit all game. He whistled low. “Man. I still can’t believe I just got my ass handed to me. Was this your little revenge match for beating you three to one last time?”I shot him a smug look. “Of course it was. You had it coming, don't you think? There was no way I was going to let you think you were better than me.”Freddie rolled his eyes, though he was smiling. “I'm devastated though. Five-zero? Not even a pity goal?”“You told me to take it seriously,” I reminded him. “So I did.”He cleared his throat. “I don't know what I was thinking. Perhaps I wasn't thinking at all.”“Footwork, Fred,” I said, tapping my blade against his skate. “Your edges are fine when you’ve got space, but you’re too stiff when I c

Author's POV Lady Adelaide didn’t bother easing into the conversation. The folder she had carried in was tossed onto the table with a controlled flick of her wrist. It slid across the surface, landing directly in front of Ezekiel Lillard. Cassie's eyes widened. Photos. The first one was Zeke talking to Fallon. Cassie’s stomach turned. Fallon, the same girl who pretended to date Ledger just to spy on him. The next photo showed Zeke crouched by Ledger’s door, fixing a small camera above the frame. Another one had him slipping a flash drive into Freddie’s locker.Cassie leaned forward before she realized what she was doing, but Ezekiel pulled the folder closer. His hand slid over the images, blocking her view. His face didn’t shift much, but his grip on the folder looked tight.Cassie’s mind was racing. Why was Lady Adelaide showing this to him? Why hand over proof like this?“I’m not asking for a confession. I’m not asking you to explain yourselves. I’m simply telling you to stop here

  • Fake Dating With The Playboy hockey Captain   Chapter 169

Cassie's POV A courier pulled over and handed a parcel to one of Lady Adelaide’s guards. The guard passed it to her through the tinted window, and without hesitation she tore it open. Inside was a plain folder, the kind lawyers always seemed to carry. She flipped it open, scanned something quickly, then tucked it neatly by her side as though it was just another checklist on her desk.“Have you ever been to a prison, Cassandra?” she asked me as soon as we were cleared through the last security gate. The question caught me off guard. I looked out the window. The place was… huge. Bigger than I imagined. The walls were tall, cameras everywhere, guards posted like statues. But inside the compound, it didn’t look harsh. The yard was almost polished, like something out of a gated community. The lawns were cut, the pathways were smooth. My brain kept telling me prison, but my eyes kept thinking hotel.“Once,” I said after a pause. “When we had to interview a prisoner for a feature. Definitel

Author's POV Ledger stood, his sudden movement drawing the eyes of both Dorothy and Alison.“Ledger, let the woman sleep,” Alison said, her tone clipped. He glanced between them, restless. “It's been a while, Alison. I'm not only worried something worse has happened, but Cassie's bound to think she's been abducted if she wakes up in a strange room.”Alison tilted her head. She knew he was right. One of the wonderful perks of Cassie's journalism instincts was overanalyzing simple things and reading too much into things that were simple to regular people.Dorothy leveled a stare at us.“Her phone is right next to her. If she panicked, she’d call you.”That made Ledger pause, though it didn’t erase the tension from his stance.“I guess I’ve become predictable,” came Cassie’s voice. They all turned. She was walking toward them from the hallway, her hair slightly mussed but her steps steady. Ledger closed the distance between them at once, his eyes scanning her face.“You okay?” he asked.
