I met Taser four years ago at one of the bars I stopped at while on the run. I had done something horrible at home which led to my mother’s death. I couldn’t face my sister Myra, and did the only thing I knew how to: run…hide. Taser was easy to be around and after a couple shared drinks, I told him everything. Well almost everything. But we had been together ever since. As friends at first, but then he finally asked me out, and even though he wanted us to be quiet about it, almost everyone had hinted at us dating; presently or in the future. Then a year later, Evie showed up. The beautiful darkhaired, tall and sarcastic marvel . After she talked to me at our first class together, I knew she would be my best friend forever and introduced her to Taser. She loved everything I loved, except him, who she hated being around. I guess that changed… or better, it was never true. Taser and Evie were in a shouting match and I had somehow found my way into a seat by the dressing table. “You pretended you didn’t know each other?” I could still remember their first meeting. My excitement ar having my two favorite people come together. Taser’s harmless flirting and Evie’s disinterest. But they knew each other. And I stood there grinning like a fool. “Ding ding Lilybud. Do you want a prize for using your brain?” Evie jested, a taunting smirk on her face, even though tears coated her cheeks. “That day after we ‘met’ I gave Taser a nice little blowjob in your car while we waited for you to get lunch.” “Evelyn!-“ “Taser has NEVER been yours!” She screamed. “He has always been mine, till you waltzed into our lives with your rich girl tantrum. And stole him from me. And I had to watch you kiss, and touch, and go on and on about him like he was yours!” “That’s enough!” Taser bellowed and grabbed her arm. He whispered sharply to her ear, and whatever he must’ve said mellowed her out because she turned on her heel and stormed out, face still tear stained. ”This has to be a joke.” Some sick prank that they were playing on me. In a minute she would come back through those doors, laughing as she told me that they got me good. All in time for us to retouch our makeup, head down and join the fun. “The party. Fuck.” I breathed, resting my head in my hands. My sister was downstairs waiting for me to officially introduce Taser. “We’re going to be late. We should head down.” Taser groaned behind me. For a split second, I believed I had imagined his words. It was either that or everything else that happened before was a less bloodied version of a final destination vision. No, that pink nipple was real. The light layer of my best friend’s juices on his lips was very real. He was also expecting to go on like nothing happened. “Are you crazy?” “Yes Lily, I am! I’m crazy about you.” He knelt in front of my chair, staring up at me with his beautiful blue eyes. His hair had fallen over his eyes like it was prone to do. On an ordinary day, I would run my fingers through it and push it back. All I wanted to do now was pull. “You know how much I love you Lily. This thing with Evie, I wanted to stop it, but I felt bad for her, she was so clingy and threatened to kill herself-you know this is what she wants right? She wants to pull us apart. Tonight is everything you’ve wanted and she’s trying to ruin it. Don’t let her do that to us. We’re stronger than that. ” He squeezed my hand supportively and bile rose in my throat. I didn’t recognize the man beside me. He looked like my Taser, spoke like my Taser but he was different. Or I was. I looked at him, seeing only this version. The man who was trying to pin two years of cheating solely on Evie. The man who tried to gaslight his way out of this. To think I had spent years loving him. Years changing, to be with him. I didn't recognize him, but I didn’t recognize me either. Dark hair, low heels, simple clothes so I wouldn’t stand out… “I lost weight to fit into this.” I said to myself in disbelief as I rose. And that would be fine if I did it for myself, but I did it for him! “Told you it would be a perfect fit if you lost a couple pounds. Now look at you.” He bought the dress in the smallest size to “motivate” me to lose weight. And I did. My dress felt tighter, the fabric rubbing me in all the wrong ways. Suffocating Like being in a fever dream. The dream that this relationship was, but, I was waking up. I gave him my everything. I opened the door and stepped into the hallway which was completely clear. Everyone was at the party. Probably giving bracelets to their loyal boyfriends. “I’m sure we’ll still be in time for the ceremony.” Taser assured me. “We’ll talk about everything after, I promise. We’re in this together.” My anger boiled. He thought he had me so wrapped around him that I would forgive two fucking years of lies! Of being a complete fool. Of course he would think that, look at me. I raised my hand to head and removed the pins holding it in place, tossing in as I continued to the hall. Taser played me. Evie played me. His cousin must’ve been in on this scam too. She tried to stop me from getting to his room. And he thought I would still be the stupid twat for him. I could play his game. Fool him like he fooled me. Even if it meant being attached to him. I enter the hall, my eyes immediately falling on the row of girls in the centre of the room, offering or fixing bracelets on the wrists of the guys with them, all wearing silly smiles. I was supposed to be one of them. “Lily!” I hear a familiar voice call and turn to find my sister weaving through the crowd to get to me. Immediately, I see the man next to her and stop, stunned. The invitation I extended was to my sister and her husband, Pierce. But instead of him, she was with Jace. Jace the last person I would expect to see here, Jace the asshole douchebag from hell. ”That’s Jace Whitmore!” I hear Taser hiss excitedly beside me. I can hear the buzz around me already as they get closer. Then it hits me. Maybe I don’t need to stay with Taser to get my pay back. What I need is his new boss. Jace.***** JACE ***** One lie had become a truth, because it seemed Lily was genuinely interested in horses and looking forward to the races.“Apparently they’re just large dogs. Like a dog you could ride. Ohhh I hope I get to pet one!”“It’s a sport, not a petting zoo.” She mocked my voice and scrunched her face up. “You’re gonna ruin this for me aren’t you?”Throughout the ride she had been in good spirits. Guess I was the only one thinking about the kiss. “I won’t make any promises.” I pulled into the parking area of the ranch where the event was being held, and stopped the car. Even from there, I could hear the announcers calling for the next race. Several groups past by our car chattering about bets they had made. “Show time.” I said and opened my door. Then went around and opened hers. “Wait. I’ve got something for you.” She said, holding me back. I was drawn to new details on her face. While she had managed to keep her glittery goodness off her body, it peppered shined on her ey
***** LILY *****Taser and I had been on sex hiatus. It was finals and things were hectic, I understood. But being so intimately pressed with a man that made little sounds like he was tortured while his teeth grazed my teeth, six months felt like a bloody lifetime. His tongue darted out to taste the crook of my neck and I thought of several other places I wanted that mouth. A throat cleared behind us. Jace didn’t seem to want to let go of me. I didn’t want him to. Not while I was on that car, shivering with need. He’d stopped kissing me, but his head was still buried in the crook of my neck. My heart pounded in my face as I forced my eyes to focus on our intruder. “Jace?” I called tentatively. I could not figure what was going through his head. Sure we had started off just setting up for Taser, but in those few seconds it had morphed into something more intense. Real. He squeezed my thigh, exhaling hard, then stepped back without looking at me.I was fine with that. I had to fin
***** LILY *****I walked across the parking lot, my eyes scanning my surroundings. I was certain no one would be here for at least an hour, so I had time to do the deed and get out.And everyone would assume I was here to see Jace, not find my ex’s car. I cringed as my phone pinged with a new message. I thought it was on silent mode. I pulled it out of my hip bag and frowned at the new text. More details from Jace on an event he wanted me to check out. Some horseriding thing. I didn’t care enough to go through the details, but it sounded like a lot of work. A lot more work than what he was doing for me. I bet I would run into one of his exes at this thing too. I huffed, then smiled when I spotted Taser’s new car. I still couldn’t believe this was actually his. It was not surprising though. Taser liked to belong. His used Toyota didn’t exactly fit the image he wanted at Jace’s company. What was surprising was where he got the money for this… I didn’t know cars, but it looked expens
*****LILY*****I glanced up at the stunning brunette that was smiling down at us. “Fuck.” Jace cursed beside me, I don’t think he realized he had done it. I could immediately tell they had had history with the way she was staring at him expectantly. “It has been a while, hasn’t it? Six months, right?”Whatever drama this was, I wanted no part of it. I started to scoot away when Jace’s hand returned to my hip, keeping me in place. I sucked air into my lungs, my body going taut for the second time. Sure I was holding his hand in the building, but this pose felt intimate. I was extremely aware of every finger and the subtle movements it made on my jean covered thigh.I was frankly too aware of Jace’s presence. And more pissed about it with the possible vogue model in a cute yellow dress that hugged her lithe figure.God, she was stunning.“Yup, six months. It’s good to see you again.”“I tried to reach you multiple times.” She was still smiling but there was a bite to her tone. “I am
*****JACE*****Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. I don’t know how I survived this long without facing the consequences of my lifestyle.Well there was Daisy, who smashed my car windows, and Crystal, who threatened to kill me and then herself. But I never fooled any of them into thinking we were a real deal, unlike the sucker I was looking at. He deserved whatever was coming.“Babe, I think it’s time we leave, walk me to the door?” Her eyes glowed with mischief, joy and seduction. Whether she intended the last bit or not. Perhaps putting her ex down added an extra point to her confidence levels.“I have a better idea,” I found myself saying, “how about we have lunch together?”“Are you sure?” Her voice sounded thick and flowy, a tone meant to disarm. I reminded myself that she was being showy, for her ex.So it made perfect sense when my fingers brushed over her face, tucked an errant strand behind her ear, and raised her chin up.“Can’t think of any other way to spend my after
***** LILY *****I clapped, “okay! Time to head downstairs. Would you like to escort me o boyfriend of mine?”We’s already decided he was coming, but since that bead broke, he’d returned to acting aloof. So maybe he had changed his mind about coming. Coming or not, I was going to enjoy this.“Lead the way.” He gritted out, like he was already regretting this decision. I grinned at his displeasure, made my way to the chair I’d dumped my jacket on and grabbed it. “Hold this.”He collected it without a word. Outside his office, he grabbed my hand and tugged me to the side.“Private elevator huh. Use it to sneak your girlfriends in?” I teased. Jace ignored me.“Care to share what you have planned?”“Thought you’d never ask. A couple nights ago, while I was seething in my heartbreak and logging Taser’s email account in conspiratory theorist forums, I had an epiphany. I could do better than that. So I got online and ordered him a bunch of necessary items, and had them delivered here, the
