Xitllali De La Rosa (living as "Esperanza")

My eyes burned as I stared down at the letters carved into the metal: GUILLERMO TZOTZIL-VARGAS.

My hands were shaking so badly that I could barely keep the gun steady.

Guillermo didn't move. He stayed on his knees among the broken glass and crushed marigold petals.

He didn't flinch. He didn't reach for another weapon in his coat. He didn't even move his head away from the gun pointed straight at his forehead.

He wants me to do it.

The thought slammed into my brain, it was cold and terrifying. A predator who comes to drag you back to a cage fights. A man setting a trap guards his throat. But Guillermo was just looking up at me with raw, bloodshot eyes, completely motionless.

He was handing me the power to end everything right here.

"You think this is a game?" My voice cracked, it was raw with fury and terror. "You think putting your name on a piece of brass will make me hesitate? I'll do it!"

"I don't think anything, Xitllali," he said quietly. His voice was scratchy, stripped of all the arrogance he used to wear in Guadalajara. "You asked why I came. I came to give you the choice I never gave you two years ago."

"Don't do that," I sobbed, my thumb trembling against the steel slide. "Don't act like you're doing me a favor!"

My knuckles turned white as I tightened my grip on the gun. A part of me wants to shoot him and just end everything.

He slowly closed his eyes, he didn't beg. He just took one long breath and waited for me to pull the trigger.

I couldn't do it.

Shooting a man who was fighting back was survival. Shooting a man who was actively offering his execution was something else entirely.

If I pulled this trigger, I wouldn't be free, I'd spend the rest of my life locked in the memory of his corpse on my floor.

I pushed the slide forward with my thumb and it snapped shut with a heavy click, locking the single bullet in place.

His eyes opened instantly.

"Get up," I rasped, stepping back three full steps until my lower back touched the wooden edge of the display counter. I kept the gun aimed at his heart. "Get up!”

He slowly got to his feet, holding onto the table for support. Even tired and worn out, there was still something intimidating about him. His broad shoulders blocked half the light from the streetlamp outside, and his dark coat was soaked from the rain.

"Now talk," I demanded, my hands shaking as I kept the gun pointed at his chest. "No speeches. You came all the way here, and I have questions. I want answers."

He stayed still, keeping his hands where I could see them. "Ask me. I'll answer.”

"Who else knows I'm in San Cristóbal?"

"No one," he said flatly.

"Don't lie to me!" I yelled, my voice breaking as tears ran down my cheeks. "My neighbor saw someone down by the river road asking about a woman who looks like me. He said there's a black truck down there right now!"

I took a shaky breath, tightening my grip on the gun. "So don't stand there and tell me you came alone. Who did you bring with you, Guillermo? Who's out there?”

His brow furrowed, and the look in his eyes changed. "I drove here alone in a sedan, Xitllali. I didn't bring anyone with me. Not even Hector."

My heart dropped. "Then who the hell is in the black truck?!”

He suddenly went still. The tired look on his face disappeared and it was replaced by something much more serious.

He looked toward the broken front window, his eyes narrowing as he stared into the dark, rainy street outside.

"Did anyone follow you when you went out today?" he asked, his voice suddenly low and serious.

"No," I stammered, the panic I was already feeling doubled instantly. "I haven't left the shop all day.”

"Someone must have followed me," he muttered. His hand moved instinctively toward his inner coat pocket before he stopped himself, remembering he had just given me his only weapon.

"I thought I'd lost them on the mountain road outside town. I didn't think much of it because I assumed they were just highway patrol."

"Who?" I asked, panic rising again. My breathing had become quick and uneven. "Guillermo, who the hell is out there?!”

Before he could answer, I heard the deep sound of a diesel engine coming from the small alley behind my shop.

The sound slowly came closer.

My stomach dropped. That back alley was my only way out. It was the escape route I had checked every single morning for two years.

"Xitllali, give me the gun right now," he said quietly, stepping sideways to put his body between me and the back door.

"No!" I choked out, pulling the gun closer to his chest. "No, I'm not giving it to you!”

"They aren't here for a flower shop owner," he growled, his voice turning hard as he turned his back to me, and watched the shaking wooden latch on the back door.

"They're here for El Crotalo. And if they catch us in this room, they won't care who you are before they start shooting, and I don't want you to get hurt, so give me the gun right now!”

A heavy metal bang hit the wooden back door from outside, and the lock broke with a loud crack.

Guillermo didn't wait. He lunged backward, grabbed my shoulder, and pulled me hard behind the solid oak counter just as the back door was kicked completely off its hinges.

XitllaliI stared at Guillermo in horror. He was clearly not okay; he leaned so heavily against the dirt wall that I wondered if it was the only thing keeping him on his feet."You can't do this," I whispered, my voice shaking.I stepped closer and reached for his arm with trembling hands."Guillermo, look at yourself. Those men will tear you apart."He didn't pull away from my touch, but his eyes remained cold. They were the eyes of El Crotalo. Hard, calculating, and without a trace of fear."I've walked through worse than this, Xitllali," he said. His voice was low and rough."Not while you're bleeding to death!" I cried, tears filling my eyes already. "Please. Please don't do this. Not for me."He reached out with his hand and grabbed the back of my neck. His fingers were warm, and his grip was firm but surprisingly gentle. He pulled me closer until I had no choice but to look into his eyes."I'm not doing this just for you," he murmured, his breath brushing against my cheek. "I'm

XitllaliMy stomach twisted into a tight, cold knot. The old woman who ran the fruit cart was Doña Carmen. She walked with a bad limp, and every Tuesday, she always brought an extra sweet orange and refused to take my money for it. She was one of the first people who had welcomed me into this neighborhood when I arrived as a stranger with nothing but a fake name and a broken heart. And now, she was kneeling in the cold street with a gun pointed at her head."I have to go up there," I whispered.I grabbed the thick edges of Guillermo's heavy coat and pushed it off my shoulders. I shifted my weight, trying to move out from under him so I could stand up and go to the ladder. Before I could even lift my knees, a large hand clamped around my wrist like an iron trap."No," Guillermo stated. It didn't sound like a request. It was a dark, absolute law.I looked down at him. His face was pale and covered in dried gray mud, but his grip on my arm was terrifyingly strong. His eyes were wide open

XitllaliI woke up to the sound of quiet, steady breathing. For a few seconds, I didn't open my eyes. My whole body ached as if I'd been beaten. My back was stiff, my neck hurt, and both my legs were numb from sitting on the cold floor all night.I slowly opened my eyes. The cellar was still dark, but a little gray light came through the cracks in the wooden door above us. Morning had come.I looked down at my lap. Guillermo was still asleep, but he looked different now. The painful frown on his face was gone, and his jaw was relaxed.I reached out with my hand and gently touched his cheek with the back of my fingers. His skin was cool. It was a little damp with sweat, but the terrible heat from the night before was gone. The thick clay packs I'd placed on his chest and neck had dried overnight, leaving cracked patches against his skin.He was safe. He was going to live.I let out a long, shaky breath. Then I leaned my head against the dirt wall and closed my eyes. It felt as if a hea

XitllaliHe didn't move. The bright beam from Valdo's flashlight hit his face. His head fell to the side, and his chin touched his chest."Boss," Valdo said, his voice filled with panic. He dropped to his knees beside us. His large hands reached for Guillermo's neck, and he pressed two fingers against it to check his pulse."Is he breathing? Is he okay?" I asked, my voice shaking so badly that I could barely speak. I picked up Guillermo's limp hand from the dirt and held it tightly. "Valdo, is he breathing?""He's breathing, Señora," he said, looking up at me.In the light of the flashlight, I could see the fear on Valdo's face."But he's burning up," he continued, his voice filled with worry. "His body is getting weaker. We need to cool him down right now.""We need a hospital!" I cried, tears filling my eyes."We can't," Valdo said firmly. "The boss is too weak to defend himself. If we carry him into the street and any of Severo's men see us, we won't be able to fight back."I stare

XitllaliI let go of Guillermo’s hand. My fingers felt strange without the warmth of his.Valdo and Mateo got to work immediately. They moved quietly through the broken room. Mateo went to the front entrance and moved large pieces of broken wall and an overturned table toward the shattered window to block the view from the street."The street is completely empty now, Boss," Valdo whispered as he returned to the main room. "But we can't stay on this floor. Once the sun comes up, anyone passing by will see our shadows through the broken glass."Guillermo stood near the burnt counter. He nodded slowly, but I noticed something was wrong. His movements were stiff. He leaned heavily against the burnt wood, holding his left arm tightly against his ribs. He was trying to hide his pain, but I could see how hard it was for him to breathe."There's a basement," I said quietly, looking at the three men.Guillermo turned his dark eyes toward me."Under the storage room," I explained, keeping my vo

Valdo and Mateo quietly moved into the shadows, raising their weapons silently as the sound of tires crunching over gravel and broken glass came from outside.Mateo muttered a low curse under his breath, his grip tightening on his rifle. "We could take them right here, Boss," he muttered, his jaw tight. "Catch them in the open before they get out of the truck."Guillermo didn't hesitate. "No," he replied, his voice a sharp, absolute law. "We won't turn a civilian street into a sho
