I press the blade against my chest in a silent prayer. Something slams by the side of my window and a yelp tears out of me. But I remember—they locked me in, so I’m safe, right? I try to stay calm and continue praying, but the same noise slams again.

“It’s you, cursed child of the hunter.”

I scream in panic as a deathly figure—just like the one that tried to rape me that night—appears behind the glass, hands outstretched, thick liquid dripping down his mouth.

Don’t panic. He can’t get into the car, I tell myself.

But I can’t stop my legs from shaking as the creature drags its fingers, screeching lines across the glass, smearing blood in wide arcs as it stares straight at me.

“Look at me, golden one. Look. At. Me.”

“Nooo!” I scream, pressing my hands to my ears as sweat trickles down my face.

~~AURELIA~~ “I thought you’d do that.” A low voice interrupts from behind, and I gasp, turning to see Rafaele leaning by the door. He’s wearing a suit. Looking all shades of… evil. Yes, that’s the right word. Not handsome. I hadn’t even heard the door open. I’d been too busy ripping the damn

That’s all it takes for him to strike. My chest erupts in pain, an invisible hand crushing my heart. I stagger back, chairs screeching as I collapse and vomit across the floor. Just like that night. “Don’t forget your place, son,” Gaetano breathes, towering over me as I writhe. “You might be a hyb

He lifts a hand. Instantly compelling my legs as I stumble toward him, helpless, and collapse into his arms—shaking. From fear… and a sick twist of relief. “I leave you in the hands of my men, and you still disobey me,” his voice rumbles against my hair—granite and fire. I should cower. But I don’t. He can be a monster, yes… but those things he just killed… “What are those things?” I whisper against his chest, my voice trembling. “Witches,” he murmurs into my hair. “Come on. Let’s get you out of the sun.” Witches…? I glance back to the bloody heap—just as a naked, beautiful child wanders from the dunes. Tiny hands stuffed in its mouth. Rafaele tenses. I hear his low growl as he raises the gun, aiming. “No! No, you can’t kill him!” I grab his hands, panicked. But he doesn’t budge. Doesn’t even look at me. “That thing is not a child, Piccolo,” he hisses in annoyance but… he can’t be right. It’s literally a baby. Tears well in my eyes as the child toddles toward the co

I hit the street, uncaring about the curious glance coming from passerby’s. “Hey you!!! Come back here this instant!” That shout comes from behind me. Lucky me—a small blue taxi pulls up just ahead. “Please! Stop, please!” I wave frantically. I don’t wait for him to respond. I yank the back door open and slide inside just as three bulky men burst out of the building. “You a thief or something?” the driver asks after screeching away. “I—I’m not a thief, I just—” I trail off, watching Antonio’s car closing in behind us. Oh shit. “Please don’t let that car catch up. Please—” “I don’t carry thieves.” “I’m not a thief! I’ll pay you—really nicely.” I raise the card, watching his beady eyes shift. He says nothing more after that, just keeps driving—cutting through traffic while Antonio stays right on our tail. A weird tangy smell hits me from the car but I ignore it. I have bigger problems. When I finally glance back, joy twists through my belly. Antonio’s gone. We
